Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coronation Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns and Songs This Hymn Book is the outcome of an extended and successful experi ment in Congregational Singing, nearly all the pieces which it contains having been tested by actual use. This experiment has demonstrated two things: viz. Ist, That in order to put a book into the hands of every member of the Congregation a sine qua 72072 to the highest success - a smaller and less expensive hymnal than those now generally in use is imperatively demanded; 2d, That with the quickened pace of spiritual activity now visible in the Church, there is a call for a more rapid movement in the service of song. With a view of meeting these requirements we present the Coronation Hymnal to the public. It claims to be a selection rather than a collection. But though small and'compa'ct, it has undertaken to present the best and most widely accepted standard hymns and tunes in use in all our churches, combining with these an ample selection of the lively and stirring melodies known as gospel songs. This combination has been found to work so well in actual experience by meeting the demand of the most critical as well as the most popular taste, that our book is sent forth with strong confidence that it will meet a real need. Book excerpt: A rich and comprehensive volume—essential reading for all those interested in how to read Luke as relevant for today In this sixth volume, the Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar brings its past six years of work on biblical hermeneutics to bear on the gospel according to Luke. In his introduction, Anthony Thiselton, world authority on biblical hermeneutics, sets the context for a wideranging exploration of how to read Luke for God’s address today. Traditional and more contemporary approaches are brought into dialogue with each other as several top Lukan scholars reflect on how best to read Luke as Scripture. Topics covered include the purpose of Luke- Acts, biblical theology and Luke, narrative and Luke, reception history and Luke, the parables in Luke, a missional reading of Luke, and theological interpretation of Luke. Since prayer is a major theme in Luke, this volume explores not only the role of prayer in Luke, but also the relationship between prayer and exegesis.

Book The World s Oldest Literature

Download or read book The World s Oldest Literature written by William W. Hallo and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature begins at Sumer, we may say. Given that this ancient crossroads of tin and copper produced not only bronze and the entire Bronze Age, but also by neccesity, the first system of record-keeping and the technique of writing. Scribal schools served to propogate the new technique and their curriculum grew to create, preserve and transmit all manner of creative poetry. In a lifetime of research, the author has studied multiple aspects of this most ancient literary oeuvre, including such questions as chronology and bilingualism, as well as contributing fundamental insights into specific genres such as proverbs, letter-prayers and lamentations. In addition, he has drawn conclusions for the comparative or contextual approach to biblical literature. His studies, widely scattered in diverse publications for nearly fifty years, are here assembled in convenient one-volume format, made more user-friendly by extensive cross-references and indices.
