Book An American Uprising in Second World War England

Download or read book An American Uprising in Second World War England written by Kate Werran and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-07-19 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shocking story of a WWII shootout between black and white GIs in a quiet Cornish town that put the British-US “special relationship” on trial. On September 26, 1943, racial tensions between American soldiers stationed in Cornwall erupted in gunfire. Labelled a ‘wild west’ mutiny by the tabloids, it became front page news in Great Britain and the USA. For Americans, it bolstered a fast-accelerating civil rights movement, while in the UK, it exposed unsettling truths about Anglo-American relations. With new archival research, journalist Kate Werran pieces together the shocking drama that authorities tried to hush up. Her narrative examines everything from the controversy of American segregation on British soil to the shocking event itself and the resulting court martial. Extracted from wartime cabinet documents, secret government surveys, opinion polls, diaries, letters and newspapers as well as testimony from those who remember it, this story offers a rare window into a little-known dark side of the ‘American Invasion.’

Book Cornwall in the Civil War

Download or read book Cornwall in the Civil War written by Raechel Guest and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, the people of Cornwall became embroiled in a war that tore the nation apart. Cornwall's men enlisted in the Union army, spending years away from their farms and businesses. The lucky ones returned home and recovered from their wounds; others returned home but were never able to recover from the trauma of war; still others died in battle or from disease. On the home front, the South Cornwall Ladies' Charitable Society raised funds and put together care packages for the troops, ministers rallied the spirits of their congregations, and dissenters and Southern sympathizers struggled to remain part of the community. Cornwall's best known soldier, Major General John Sedgwick, was the highest ranking Union casualty of the war. Other Cornwall soldiers included William Cogswell, Connecticut's first Native American to enlist in the war; and Charles Blinn, Connecticut's "boy Colonel." Their stories, and those of nearly two hundred Cornwall soldiers, appear here.

Book A Military History of the English Civil War

Download or read book A Military History of the English Civil War written by Malcolm Wanklyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Military History of the English Civil War examines how the civil war was won, who fought for whom, and why it ended. With a straightforward style and clear chronology that enables readers to make their own judgements and pursue their own interests further, this original history provides a thorough critique of the reasons that have been cited for Parliament's victory and the King's defeat in 1645/46. It discusses the strategic options of the Parliamentary and Royalist commanders and councils of war and analyses the decisions they made, arguing that the King’s faulty command structure was more responsible for his defeat than Sir Thomas Fairfax's strategic flair. It also argues that the way that resources were used, rather than the resources themselves, explain why the war ended when it did.

Book World Military History Bibliography

Download or read book World Military History Bibliography written by Barton Hacker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preclassical and indigenous nonwestern military institutions and methods of warfare are the chief subjects of this annotated bibliography of work published 1967–1997. Classical antiquity, post-Roman Europe, and the westernized armed forces of the 20th century, although covered, receive less systematic attention. Emphasis is on historical studies of military organization and the relationships between military and other social institutions, rather than wars and battles. Especially rich in references to the periodical literature, the bibliography is divided into eight parts: (1) general and comparative topics; (2) the ancient world; (3) Eurasia since antiquity; (4) sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania; (5) pre-Columbian America; (6) postcontact America; (7) the contemporary nonwestern world; and (8) philosophical, social scientific, natural scientific, and other works not primarily historical.
