Book Cornwall and the Civil War

Download or read book Cornwall and the Civil War written by Raechel Elisabeth Guest and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1861, the people of Cornwall became embroiled in a war that tore the nation apart. Cornwall's men enlisted in the Union army, spending years away from their farms and businesses. The lucky ones returned home and recovered from their wounds; others returned home but were never able to recover from the trauma of war; still others died in battle or from disease. On the home front, the South Cornwall Ladies' Charitable Society raised funds and put together care packages for the troops, ministers rallied the spirits of their congregations, and dissenters and Southern sympathizers struggled to remain part of the community. Cornwall's best known soldier, Major General John Sedgwick, was the highest ranking Union casualty of the war. Other Cornwall soldiers included William Cogswell, Connecticut's first Native American to enlist in the war; and Charles Blinn, Connecticut's "boy Colonel." Their stories, and those of nearly two hundred Cornwall soldiers, appear here." -- Publisher info.

Download or read book Soldiers and Strangers written by Mark Stoyle and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War fought between Charles I and his Parliament is one of the most momentous conflicts in English history. This book provides a wholly new perspective by revealing the extent to which the struggle possessed an "ethnic" dimension, and the impact of that on the forging of English national identity. Stoyle reveals the acute fear of foreign invasion that gripped England after 1640, when the insular English were placed on the brink of what they perceived as a national emergency. Stoyle sets the creation of the New Model Army within that context, arguing that its appearance represented the culmination of a campaign by Oliver Cromwell and others to forge a purely "English" military instrument, one purged of the foreign solders who had been so prominent in earlier Parliamentarian armies. This self-consciously "English" army eventually succeeded in wresting back control of the kingdom by defeating the king's forces, re-conquering Cornwall and Wales, and expelling all foreign agents.

Book excerpt: The history of Cornwall in the first half of the seventeenth century is both dramatic and turbulent. In Faction and Faith, Anne Duffin draws upon extensive new source material, combining national documents and local family collections with a detailed analysis of churchwardens' accounts, borough records and over 350 wills. She challenges the established view that Cornwall was naturally royalist and presents a picture of a politically-aware and religiously-splintered society. Faction and Faith, the first major publication since 1933 on this period in Cornwall, challenges the established view of Cornish society in the early seventeenth century through the extensive use of new source materials from national and local records. Market: Scholars of early seventeenth century history, academic and local libraries, postgraduate and undergraduate students of history, all those with an interest in Cornish and Civil War history.

Book West Britons

  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book West Britons written by Mark Stoyle and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Britons provides a fresh interpretation of the bloodiest, most devastating years in Cornwall's history and a wholly new perspective on the history of the far South West of Britain. The book explores the unprecedented series of rebellions which took place in Cornwall between 1497 and 1648, traces the connections which existed between those revolts and the contemporary Cornish perception of themselves as a separate 'people', and argues that Cornish history must be viewed within a 'British', rather than a purely English context. West Britons will be required reading for all those who are engaged in the contemporary political and historical debate over 'Britishness'. The book also includes transcriptions of a number of previously unpublished documents, useful to teachers and their students, and a list of some 300 Cornish Royalist officers, of special interest to Civil War enthusiasts and genealogists.
