Book excerpt: The Schaub family purchased a farm in northwest Iowa in the mid 1930s. The worst of the Great Depression was ebbing, but the bad economy still had plenty of bite and a world war loomed. Werner and his wife, Laura, mustered all the money they could to buy their own place; once they had it, they did everything they could to make a living. Their children chipped in, but they also managed to find adventure around every corner. Meanwhile, a tempestuous Mother Nature complicated their lives with violent winds and black dust storms. The church, generally a rock of support for the community, became unbending at times. World War II improved grain markets but took many sons away from the farms. The Schaub family stuck together, but financial insecurity lurked in the shadows. Getting land, paying for it, and making a living were tough in the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. Even so, the Schaubs never gave up as they tried to find the good life Between the Corn Rows.

Love the land.” In this paperback edition of a beloved Jerry Apps classic, the rural historian captures the heart and soul of life in rural America. Inspired by his mother’s farm account books—in which she meticulously recorded every farm purchase—Jerry chronicles life on a small farm during and after World War II. Book excerpt: "Stockmen who graze cattle on the mountain ranges of the western United States suffer heavy loses from larkspur poisoning. Careful and long-continued investigation under range conditions has shown clearly under what conditions these deaths occur and has shown also that by sufficient care most of the losses can be avoided. This bulletin, in a brief form, gives the facts and measures which should be taken to reduce the losses. Bulletin 365 of the United States Department of Agriculture, a professional paper, treats the subject in a more detailed and technical manner."--Page [2]

Book Crop Systems for Arkansas

Download or read book Crop Systems for Arkansas written by A. D. McNair and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Crop systems for Arkansas that make for increased food production and increased efficiency in man labor and horse labor are described in the following pages. By introduction of cowpeas, soy beans, and other legumes, and by second cropping, provision is made for a considerable increase in the number of crop acres that can be farmed by the average family. Thus, two men with a team, who under a cotton and corn system can farm but 33 acres of land, can handle 50 acres and raise 62 acres crops under a system providing for a 4-year rotation, including (10 cotton with a winter cover crop, (2) cowpeas, (30 oats or wheat followed by cowpeas, and (4) corn. In each of the copping systems suggested the crop acreages are calculated for tow men and a team, and for light medium and heavy soils. These systems in general apply to all of Arkansas except the northwestern part, and some of them may be used to advantage in northern Louisiana, northeastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, western Tennessee, and the northern half of Mississippi."--Page 2

Book Cooling Milk and Cream on the Farm

Download or read book Cooling Milk and Cream on the Farm written by J. A. Gamble and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dairymen lose thousands of dollars annually because of poorly cooled milk and cream. These losses occur because the milk or cram is returned by dealers to the farmers, and because of low-grade manufactured products which bring low prices. Every dairyman who produces and delivers a high grade of milk or cream raises the average quality of all milk and cream with which it is pooled, and as a result a better product reaches the consumer. Proper colling is just as important with cream as with milk, especially as cream usually is delivered less frequently and therefore has greater opportunity to undergo undesirable fermentations. Proper cooling is easily done with little additional equipment and labor. Natural ice can be had on the diary farms that produce 85 per cent of this country's milk and cream supply. Even where ice is not available, milk and cream, by better use of available cooling facilities may be cooled more effectively than at present."--Page 2
