Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornell Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 20: Gaius Verres; An Historical Study Up to the present time there has been no systematic attempt to present in complete form the sum total of the evidence covered by the Verrine indictment. Drumann (Geschichte Roms V, pp. 263-328) and Holm (Geschichte Siciliens, III, pp. 127-190) have covered the field most adequately, and by their work I have largely profited. But their treatment, together with that found in the numerous Lives of Cicero, is more or less summary, and is always subsidiary to the larger themes in connection with which they are found. In view of the great historical importance of the Verrine series, there would seem to be a field for a complete statement of the facts, as far as they can be ascertained, with the additional aim of representing the present state of scholarship on this subject, and of shedding such additional light upon certain phases of it, as may seem possible. My treatment of the De Signis, particularly of the question of the relative merits of Cicero and Verres as connoisseurs, will be found to be new and, I hope, convincing. I have also endeavored to sift carefully the evidence for the chronology of the year 70 B.C., in the light of the work of previous commentators upon that subject, and to formulate the events of that year, insofar as they pertain to the trial of Verres, in a way that seems most satisfactorily to fit the facts which Cicero has given us. I have based my work mainly upon the text of Muller (Teubner, Leipzig, 1894). Such departures as I have taken from Muller are fully explained in the notes. I have cited uniformly by section rather than by chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cornell Studies in Classical Philology Vol 7

Download or read book Cornell Studies in Classical Philology Vol 7 written by Benjamin Ide Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cornell Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 7: The Athenian Secretaries Between 1878 and the present time at least eight treatises devoted entirely to the Athenian Secretaries have been published. If we add articles in handbooks and dictionaries of classical antiquities in which statements of facts rather than proofs are furnished. the number must be doubled. The subject of this study is therefore an old, much-investigated one; its point of view alone is new. There were few annual offices at Athens not filled by boards of ten. There were fewer still filled by individuals. The secretaryships were such. Of the other single annual offices the names of the holders have with a few distinguished exceptions all been lost. It is, indeed, altogether owing to the fact that, in the case of the Secretaryships alone of their class, we know in large part the names and demes of their holders, that their study is of more than third-rate importance in Athenian Constitutional History. Knowing their demes we know their tribes, and as a result of the observation that the tribe of the psephismata secretary for any given year was determined by its position in the official order, something of value may have been derived from this study. Of this let the reader judge for himself. Daring the fifth and fourth centuries B. C. the archons establish the years of the secretaries: during the third and second the psepliismata secretaries will, hereafter, be our guides in fixing the years of the archons. To the list offered by me the names only of those archons have been admitted whose positions have been located or affected by the secretaries, and of these I am conscious that many will later have to be changed. Book Platonic Ethics Old and New

Download or read book Platonic Ethics Old and New written by Julia Annas and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julia Annas here offers a fundamental reexamination of Plato's ethical thought by investigating the Middle Platonist perspective, which emerged at the end of Plato's own school, the Academy. She highlights the differences between ancient and modern assumptions about Plato's ethics--and stresses the need to be more critical about our own. One of these modern assumptions is the notion that the dialogues record the development of Plato's thought. Annas shows how the Middle Platonists, by contrast, viewed the dialogues as multiple presentations of a single Platonic ethical philosophy, differing in form and purpose but ultimately coherent. They also read Plato's ethics as consistently defending the view that virtue is sufficient for happiness, and see it as converging in its main points with the ethics of the Stoics. Annas goes on to explore the Platonic idea that humankind's final end is "becoming like God"--an idea that is well known among the ancients but virtually ignored in modern interpretations. She also maintains that modern interpretations, beginning in the nineteenth century, have placed undue emphasis on the Republic, and have treated it too much as a political work, whereas the ancients rightly saw it as a continuation of Plato's ethical writings.
