Book The Life Cycle Assessment of Cellulosic Ethanol Production in the Wisconsin and Michigan Agricultural Contexts

Download or read book The Life Cycle Assessment of Cellulosic Ethanol Production in the Wisconsin and Michigan Agricultural Contexts written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a commonly used tool for the evaluation of the environmental impacts of the production of a good or service. The application of this tool requires further methodological development to handle the production specifications of cellulosic ethanol from agricultural feedstocks. Allocation methods, transparency and the spatial variability in crop production have all been identified grand challenges in this field. The goal of this research is to examine these challenges in the literature, test their impact on biofuel LCA results, develop and test methods for solutions to these problems and use these methods to conduct an LCA on cellulosic ethanol production. This dissertation first presents a case study on the ability of cellulosic ethanol to meet the United States Renewable Fuel Standard when various allocation methods are applied. Next, a methodological review of recent ethanol production studies is presented with recommendations for standardizing and presenting LCA methods to facilitate study comparison. Finally, a spatially-explicit LCA on the production of cellulosic ethanol from switchgrass and corn stover in southern Wisconsin and Michigan under 104 different combinations of location, agricultural management practices, ethanol production technologies and allocation methods is presented. One major finding of this research is that allocation choices and spatial variation in yields and agricultural emissions can be the deciding factor as to whether a fuel meets a regulatory requirement. Moreover, the allocation method used can limit the influence of agricultural production and mask the effects of spatial variability on the ethanol production LCA. It is recommended that a range of values be presented instead of single environmental impact results. Another major conclusion of this research is that transparency in the presentation of LCA methods is still lacking in the literature and this impedes the direct environmental impact comparison of the many available transportation fuel choices. This research develops the LCA of biofuels field by examining LCA methodology, proposing means to facilitate the comparison of studies, demonstrating that spatial variability can be accounted for in LCA and testing the effects of such variability in concert with allocation choices for their combined influence on environmental outcomes.

Book Ethanol and Corn

Download or read book Ethanol and Corn written by Marilyn C. Walchuck and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. policy to expand the production of biofuel for domestic energy use has significant implications for agriculture and resource use. While ongoing research and development investment may radically alter the way biofuel is produced in the future, for now, corn-based ethanol continues to account for most biofuel production. As corn ethanol production increases, so does the production of corn. The effect on agricultural commodity markets has been national, but commodity production adjustments, and resulting environmental consequences, vary across regions. Changes in the crop sector have also affected the cost of feed for livestock producers. As the Nation demands more biofuel production, and markets for new biofuel feedstocks, such as crop residues emerge, the agricultural landscape will be further transformed. This book explores the changes and expanding usage of ethanol and corn biofuels.

Book The Economic Impact of the Demand for Ethanol

Download or read book The Economic Impact of the Demand for Ethanol written by Michael K. Evans and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethanol production is the third-largest user of corn, behind only feed & export uses. Ethanol production uses approximately 7% of the nation's corn crop which increases farm income & generates economic activity nationwide. This report is the first comprehensive analysis of the macroeconomic impacts of ethanol production. The conclusions in this report verify the cost-effectiveness of the federal ethanol program. In short, the partial excise tax exemption provided for ethanol blends is a non-inflationary incentive that creates jobs, stimulates tremendous economic activity, & reduces our trade imbalance.

Book Ethanol and a Changing Agricultural Landscape

Download or read book Ethanol and a Changing Agricultural Landscape written by Scott A. Malcolm and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 established specific targets for the production of biofuel in the U.S. Meeting these targets will increase demand for traditional ag. commodities used to produce ethanol, resulting in land-use, production, and price changes in the farm sector. This report summarizes the estimated effects of meeting the EISA targets for 2015 on regional ag. production and the environment. Meeting EISA targets for ethanol production will expand U.S. cropped acreage by 5 million acres by 2015, an increase of 1.6% over what would otherwise be expected. Much of the growth comes from corn acreage, which increases by 3.5% over baseline projections. Water quality and soil carbon will also be affected.

Book Ethanol Expansion in the United States

Download or read book Ethanol Expansion in the United States written by Paul C. Westcott and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large expansion in ethanol production is underway in the United States. Cellulosic sources of feedstocks for ethanol production hold some promise for the future, but the primary feedstock in the United States currently is corn. Market adjustments to this increased demand extend well beyond the corn sector to supply and demand for othercrops, such as soybeans and cotton, as well as to the livestock industries. USDA¿s long-term projections, augmented by farmers¿ planting intentions for 2007, are used to illustrate anticipated changes in the agricultural sector. Graphs.
