Book Corn and Soybean Production Costs and Export Competitiveness in Argentina Brazil and the United States

Download or read book Corn and Soybean Production Costs and Export Competitiveness in Argentina Brazil and the United States written by Birgit Meade and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report explores export competitiveness for soybeans and corn in Argentina, Brazil, and the United States by comparing farm-level production costs, the cost of internal transportation and handling, and the cost of shipping to a common export destination. Prices received by farmers and average yields for each crop in each country are analyzed to calculate producer returns. Cost-of-production data are for 2010/11. To smooth the impact of weather and policy factors affecting yields and prices, 5-year average yields and prices (using 2010/11 as the midpoint) are incorporated into the comparison of per-bushel costs and returns. Findings of this study describe many of the factors that impact production and export competitiveness of the world's leading corn and soybean exporters and how changes in these factors affect their competitive position.

Book 2015 Outlook of the United States and World Corn and Soybean Industries 2014 2024

Download or read book 2015 Outlook of the United States and World Corn and Soybean Industries 2014 2024 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report evaluates the United States and world corn and soybean markets for the 2014-2024 period using the Global Corn and Soybean Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Corn-based ethanol production has influenced the United States corn industry. However, since 2010 U.S. ethanol production has remained near the 14 billion gallon level. Changes in the Federal fuel mandates could significantly impact the world corn market. Under the current assumptions in the model, corn price is expected to slowly increase to $4.20 per bushel. Chinese soybean imports are the leading factor influencing the world soybean market. China currently imports 65% of soybeans traded in the world market, and that is expected to increase by another 37% by 2024. Major exporters will continue to be the U.S., Brazil and Argentina. However, Brazil and Argentina are expected to increase exports while U.S. exports will remain at the current level. Soybean prices are expected to slowly increase to $9.79/bushel over the time period.

Book 2014 Outlook of the U S and World Corn and Soybean Industries 2013 2023

Download or read book 2014 Outlook of the U S and World Corn and Soybean Industries 2013 2023 written by Richard David Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report evaluates the United States and world corn and soybean markets for the 2013-2023 period using the Global Corn and Soybean Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions that general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change remain at the current levels. Corn-based ethanol production has influenced the United States corn industry. As long as the production of corn-based ethanol remains strong, corn prices will likely remain at a level higher than the long term average. However, changes in Federal fuel mandates could significantly impact the world corn market. Under the current assumptions in the model, corn price is expected to remain in a range between $4.60 and $5.90 per bushel. Chinese soybean imports are the leading factor influencing the world soybean market. China currently imports 67% of the soybeans traded in the world market, and that is expected to increase by another 42% by 2023. Major exporters will continue to be the U.S., Brazil and Argentina. However both Brazil and Argentina could increase exports while U.S. exports will remain at the current level. Soybean prices are expected to remain over $12.30/bushel over the time period.

Book Reflections on the Global Food Crisis

Download or read book Reflections on the Global Food Crisis written by Derek Headey and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2010 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic surge in food prices from 2005 to 2008 seriously threatened the world's poor, who struggle to buy food even under normal circumstances, and led to protests and riots in the developing world. The crisis eventually receded, but such surges could recur unless steps are taken to prevent them. Using up-to-date information, the authors of Reflections on the Global Food Crisis identify the key causes of the food price surge, its consequences for global poverty, and the challenges involved in preventing another crisis. Breaking from many earlier interpretations, the authors conclude that the crisis was not primarily fostered by increased demand for meat products in rising economies such as China and India or by declines in agricultural yields or food stocks, or by futures market speculation. Instead, they attribute the rising food prices to a combination of rising energy prices, growing demand for biofuels, the U.S. dollar depreciation; and various trade shocks related to export restrictions, panic purchases and unfavorable weather. As part of their analysis, the authors also provide the first comprehensive review of both the macroeconomic and microeconomic consequences of the crisis, as well as a detailed comparison of the current crisis with the food price crisis of 1974. To prevent another crisis, the authors conclude that the global food system should be reformed through several key steps: make trade in agricultural commodities more free yet more secure; address long-term threats to agricultural productivity, such as climate change and resource degradation; scale up social protection in potentially food insecure countries; and encourage agricultural production in at least some of the countries now heavily dependent on food imports. Reflections on the Global Food Crisis will be a valuable resource for policymakers, development specialists, and others concerned with the world's poorest people.
