Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn and Corn-Growing The Atlantic Coast farmers, from 1800 to 1840, made a real effort to get high yielding strains of corn. The farm papers of 1819 to 1822 tell of several instances of getting Maha (undoubtedly Omaha Indian) corn from Council Bluffs - now a part of Iowa. This corn was an eight-row soft corn type, and several of the eastern farmers claimed yields of more than 100 bushels to the acre. The Sioux yellow, ten to twelve-row flint corn was introduced from the west by several grow ers, and there were several introductions of a Canadian flint corn. These introductions, together with the local varieties, are probably found to some extent in all of our present-day varieties, and help to explain the heterogeneous nature of our present-day types. The Iowa State Agricultural Society report of 1858 says: A great. Many varieties of corn are cultivated, and it would be hard to tell which is the best, as farmers entertain different Opinions. Most of the varieties were dents, according to the report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Corn Growing

Download or read book Corn Growing written by Aretas W. Nolan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn Growing: A Manual for Corn Clubs With our changing social conditions, new duties, formerly delegated to the home, have been thrust upon the school. This has led to the introduction of some real life subjects into the curriculum, among them agriculture. It is not possible, however, to get the desired results in teaching agriculture by using the same methods used in teaching other subjects. The teacher who attempts to teach agriculture alone and unaided in the schoolroom has not only shouldered a heavy burden but is not making the most of an opportunity. The business of the school is to help to develop men and women of the right sort, not merely to teach boys and girls reading, writing, and arithmetic. If agri culture is to justify its place in the curriculum, it must contribute something more than mere facts. Book Illustrated Lecture on Corn Production Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrated Lecture on Corn Production Classic Reprint written by Charles Pinckney Hartley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Lecture on Corn Production For no 10-year period has the corn yield of the United View States exceeded 28 bushels per acre. No State has averaged for any year over 54 bushels per acre, yet in practically every section of the United States yields of more than 100 bushels have been produced. As States and as a Nation too much land is being used and much more labor is being performed in producing the corn crop than is necessary. The demand con trols the quantity that should be grown. To meet demands the producers of the United States during the years previous to 1910 averaged in round numbers bushels of corn yearly. In producing this quantity a little more than acres have yearly been devoted to corn growing. The possibility of doubling our acre yield of corn is so good and its accomplishment of such tremendous importance that school, State, National, and independent organizations of corn clubs and associations of com breeders and corn growers have centered their interests in this direction and have become active in a way that is certain to lead to success. Such clubs and associations are especially fitted for this most important work. By bringing together yearly the experiences of many mem bers, and continuing their records indefinitely, corn growers may each year profit by all past experiences and results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn Book for Young Folk If a young farmer can be led to acquire skill in growing one crop, he will unquestionably apply the principles that brought success in the one crop to all his other crops. The authors of this book, there fore, think it best not to confuse the mind of a beginner by a discussion of all the standard crops, but rather to teach the general principles of crop growing through their application to a specific crop. The fundamental principles, like seed selection, the preparation of a seed bed, tillage, rotation of crops, and control of moisture, are practically the same for all crops. The unessential differences, like methods of planting or harvesting, are easily acquired. Corn was selected because it is almost universally grown in our country. Book Corn Cultivation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Corn Cultivation Classic Reprint written by Charles Pinckney Hartley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn Cultivation As an average for nine years the Indiana Agricultural Experiment Station obtained best results from rows 3 feet 8 inches apart, with 1 stalk every 11 inches in the row. The Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station b after five years' tests directs as follows: On ordinary corn-belt land of northern Illinois plant corn hills 36 inches apart with 3 kernels per hill. In central Illinois on land of a productive capacity greater than 50 bushels per acre plant hills inches apart with 3 kernels per hill and on land of a lower productive capacity plant hills 36 inches apart with 2 kernels to the hill. On many farms of slight fertility in the leading corn States of the Mississippi Valley the annual yield is considerably reduced because the corn is planted as thickly as would be advisable on fertile prairie or bottom soils. Here the thinner planting practiced in regions generally less fertile could be adopted with advantage. Corn Should not be planted on soil so poor as to necessitate the placing of the rows 5 or 6 feet apart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Growing 100 Bushels of Corn to the Acre Classic Reprint

Download or read book Growing 100 Bushels of Corn to the Acre Classic Reprint written by Clarence M. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growing 100 Bushels of Corn to the Acre All of these yields were determined from accurate expense and production accounts kept by the Winners; all the yields are based on the reduction to a uniform moisture content of 20 percent. In figuring the yields, the weight of corn from 20 shocks was taken from rows running the cross and the long way of the 10-acre plots so that a uniform sample could be secured. The production accounts were based on the cost of plowing, preparing the seed bed, use Of fertilizer and manure, cost of seed corn, planting, harvesting, and finally 6 percent interest on the value of the land was added. Cost account records kept by other farmers enrolled in the 10-acre contest were as high as 57 cents per bushel when the yields were around 60 bushels per acre. The low cost per bushel Of the winners is accounted for by the fact that the high yields reduce the cost per unit to such an extent that one may say the more corn we grow per acre, the cheaper per bushel we can produce it. In other words, the production Of extra bushels per acre above the average yield or common yield can be done with unusual returns for extra labor and fertilizers used. If Simmonds had omitted any particular point in his system of corn production so that his yield would have been only 60 bushels per acre, his cost per bushel then would be approximately 40 cents; practically the same thing would have happened in the bushel costs of Riggs and Johnson. Book Money Making Corn Classic Reprint

Download or read book Money Making Corn Classic Reprint written by American Agricultural Chemica Publisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money-Making Corn It is indeed a far cry from the days of 1621 when a few acres of corn brought life and thanksgiving to the Pilgrims at Plymouth, to the present time when a single year's corn crop has a farm value approaching two billions of dollars. Over twenty-one years ago Sir William Crooks called attention to the alarming prospect of a great shortage in the world's supply of wheat. Some of our own economists now tell us that if our population continues to increase in the same ratio that it has during the recent past, fifty years hence this country will not produce food stuffs sufficient to feed its people. These investigators have apparently overlooked several important factors, chief among which are the wonderful possibilities of the corn crop, the intelligence and ability of American farmers, and the increasing assistance to agriculture that will be given by High Grade Commercial Fertilizers. This booklet is intended for practical farmers who are growing corn. Much of the work described in it is undoubtedly very familiar to you; but a careful reading may give you some helpful hints that will save you money in the future.
