She sharply informed Master Malone that he was not to use that name while referring to her, yet, somehow it was different when coming from the handsome lieutenant. She sighed and raised the stick in the air. She had no time to dawdle, for she had to practice using the sword. She was determined to be proficient in her fighting skills, even though her mother wanted her to be more ladylike.

Book excerpt: The year is 3000 AD. In 2720, man's failed social system had destroyed civilization, forcing the remaining humans to begin again. A new social system was adopted that embarked man on the unforeseen path to the Apocalypse. (Excerpt from 5th page of Chapter 18) "The Horsemen approached Jared and Destiny with unimaginable speed. Scant yards away, their horses stopped and reared with anger flashing across their eyes as Gabriel stepped forward forbidding their passage. Gabriel stood in front of them defiantly, a shining white star standing against thunderous clouds of fire. Gabriel seemed so small and fragile, yet Destiny could feel the power surging from him in waves that could be released to instantly subdue the Horsemen if the need arose. The horses stamped and snorted impatiently as the Horsemen looked at Gabriel, at the humans, and then looked up to the heavens. The Horsemen paused and raised their swords to the sky as blood red fire erupted from the edges of their blades."

Book Unsettling Sights

Download or read book Unsettling Sights written by Corinn Columpar and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsettling Sights: The Fourth World on Film examines the politics of representing Aboriginality, in the process bringing frequently marginalized voices and visions, issues and debates into the limelight. Corinn Columpar uses film theory, postcolonial theory, and Indigenous theory to frame her discussion of the cinematic construction and transnational circulation of Aboriginality. The result is a broad interdisciplinary analysis of how Indigeneity is represented in cinema, supported by more than twenty rigorous and theoretically informed case studies of contemporary feature films by both First- and Fourth-World filmmakers in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Columpar relies heavily on textual analysis of the films but also explores contextual issues in filmmaking such as funding, personnel, modes of production, and means of distribution. Part one of Unsettling Sights focuses on contact narratives in which the Aboriginal subject is constructed in reactive response to a colonizing or invading presence. Films such as The Piano and The Proposition, wherein a white man “goes native,” and The New World and Map of the Human Heart, which approach contact from the perspective of an Aboriginal character, serve as occasions to examine the ways in which Aboriginal identities are negotiated within dominant cinema. Part two shifts the focus from contact narratives to films that seek to define Aboriginality on its own terms, with reference to a (lost) homeland and/or Indigenous practices of (hi)story-telling: while texts such as Once Were Warriors and Smoke Signals foster an engagement with issues of deterritorialization, relocation, and urbanization, discussion of beDevil, Atanarjuat, and The Business of Fancydancing, among others, bring questions of voice, translation, and the relationship between cinema and oral tradition to the forefront. Unsettling Sights is the first significant, scholarly examination of Aboriginality and cinema in an international context and will be invaluable to scholars and students in many fields including cinema studies, anthropology, critical race studies, cultural studies, and postcolonial studies.

Book excerpt: For on-line shoppers, it was indeed an alternative bookmark. It was a notorious website, where the average person could hire a mercenary for $1,000 a head, without fear of being turned in. It was built to last. The feds pounded keyboards for months trying to blow its elusive IP addresses out of memory. It had a face: former Interpol agent Colin Reeves, a polite British gent with a .40 caliber pistol named Lucky, and something to hide.It was a threat.Soon there was a trail of bodies and business cards. Some would say it was impossible, but it had an undeniable force of nature on its side. "Just tell me," asked Alice, a trophy wife from Boston with an unfaithful husband and a plan to get rid of him. "Am I crazy? Are you crazy?"You're not crazy," Reeves assured her. "Vengeance is in."

Book There She Goes

Download or read book There She Goes written by Corinn Columpar and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the exchanges within and through feminist film culture to expand critical horizons in film scholarship. Following in the footsteps of the filmmakers whose work it features--including Miranda July, Janie Geiser, Tracey Moffatt, Sally Potter, Cindy Sherman, Samira Makhmalbaf, Sadie Benning, Agnès Varda, Kim Longinotto, and Michelle Citron--There She Goes: Feminist Filmmaking and Beyond seeks to make trouble not only in the archives but also at the boundaries between artistic, industrial, political, critical, and disciplinary practices. Editors Corinn Columpar and Sophie Mayer have assembled scholarship that responds to women's work in the interstices between different branches of the film industry, modes of filmmaking, national or transnational contexts, exhibition media, and varieties of visual representation in order to assess the exchanges such work enables. Essays in the first three sections of There She Goes explore connections at the level of curation and exhibition, while the subsequent four consider local connections such as those between the film and the audience or between works within an oeuvre, down to those occurring on the surface of the film. Contributors reach beyond traditional screen cinema to interact with a larger field of artistic production, including still photography, music videos, installation art, digital media, performance art, and dance. Essays also pay particular attention to a variety of contextual factors that have shaped women's filmmaking, from the conditions of production and circulation to engagement with various social movements and critical traditions, including, but not limited to, feminism. By foregrounding fluidity, There She Goes presents a an exciting new appraisal of feminist film culture, as well as the intellectual and affective potential it holds for filmmakers and filmgoers alike. Scholars of film and television studies and gender studies will appreciate the fresh outlook of There She Goes.
