Book Engraving Virtue The Printing History of a Premodern Korean Moral Primer

Download or read book Engraving Virtue The Printing History of a Premodern Korean Moral Primer written by Young Kyun Oh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Engraving Virtue, Young Kyun Oh investigates the publishing history of the Samgang Haengsil-to (Illustrated Guide to the Three Relations), a moral primer of Chosŏn (1392–1910), and traces the ways in which woodblock printed books contributed to shaping premodern Korea. Originally conceived by the court as a book with which to instill in its society Confucian ethics encased in the stories of moral heroes and heroines as filial sons, loyal subjects, and devoted wives, the Samgang Haengsil-to embodies various aspects of Chosŏn society. With careful examinations of its various editions and historical documents, Oh presents how the life of this book reflected the complicated factors of the Chosŏn society and how it became more than just a reading material.

Book Understanding Korean Christianity

Download or read book Understanding Korean Christianity written by K. Kale Yu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural landscape plays a momentous role in the transmission of Christianity. Consequently, the global expansion of the church has led to the increasing diversification of world Christianity. As a result, scholars are turning more and more to native cultures as the point of focus. This study examines how this new discourse evolved as well as presenting a missional methodology based on the study of the native landscapes of Korea. Kale Yu argues that the process of formulating and communicating Christianity was less consistent than is usually supposed. By immersing the reader in the thought and lived experience of various Korean contexts, Professor Yu recreates the diversity of cultural landscapes experienced by Korean Christians of different periods in history. The result is a new interpretation of cross-cultural missional interactions.
