Book Core analysis results comprehensive study wells Devonian shale

Download or read book Core analysis results comprehensive study wells Devonian shale written by D. L. Luffel and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three important results have been determined based on extensive core analyses on 539 feet of conventional core recovered from four comprehensive study wells in the Devonian shale in the Appalachian area, and based on new methods of core analyses developed. First relatively high values of porosity and free gas space are present, especially in the black organic rich shales. In this study unstressed porosity averages 4.5 to 7.6 percent and bulk volume of gas averages 1.5 to 3.8 percent; previous reports show porosity of 2 to 3 percent and bulk volume of gas 0.1 to 0.2 percent. Second, gas permeabilities have been measured for the first time at native fluid saturations and at in situ pressure. Permeabilities were from 0.04 to 12 microdarcies in five core plugs from very shaly sandstones or siltstones, and burrowed silty shales that were low in kerogen. The other 27 core plugs, which were mostly black organic rich shales, has gas permeabilities too low to measure (lower than 0.01 microdarcies). Third, a new method of deriving kerogen content has been developed using geochemisty measurements of total organic carbon and rock pyrolysis. Results show kerogen content is significantly higher that that derived from thin-section petrography, which is the analytical method normally used, by about 50 percent in the kerogen rich rocks.

Book Identification of Reservoir Characteristics in Cased Wells

Download or read book Identification of Reservoir Characteristics in Cased Wells written by Gas Research Institute and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing cased wells in the Devonian shale can be evaluated regardless of the availability of any previous open-hole logs. This will enable the operator to evaluate older wells for recompletion possiblilites. Log models have been recently developed, based on extensive use of core analysis, for identifying reservoir characteristics in the open-hole. Using this knowledge and an understanding of the linkage of these characteristics minimum logging suites can be utilized in the evaluation of the Devonian shale. Using the extensive data set collected during the Comprehensive Study Well (CSW) program, a method was developed for evaluating existing cased-hole wells. The methodology involves the use of several combinations of open and cased-hole logs. Although the evaluation results are more reliable where key open hole logs are available, acceptable results can be obtained even without any open hole log data.

Book Characterization and Analysis of Devonian Shales as Related to Release of Gaseous Hydrocarbons

Download or read book Characterization and Analysis of Devonian Shales as Related to Release of Gaseous Hydrocarbons written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activities are summarized for a program to determine the relationships between shale characteristics, hydrocarbon gas content, and well location to provide a sound basis for defining the productive capacity of the Eastern Devonian shale deposits and for guiding research, development, and demonstration projects to enhance the recovery of natural gas from the shale deposits. The program includes a number of elemental tasks as a part of the Resource Inventory and Shale Characterization subprojects of ERDA's Eastern Shale Project and is designed to provide large quantities of support data for that project. Approximately 1000 core samples of gas bearing Eastern Devonian shale will be examined in the program. After the characterization data for individual wells have been compiled, a regression-type analysis for pattern recognition will be performed to establish the interrelationship between the shale characteristics, the hydrocarbon gas content, and well locations from which the samples were obtained. A milestone chart depicting the planned progress on the various tasks is given, and the status of the sampling and characterization tasks are summarized. The program is approximately on schedule and the requirements set by the milestone chart will likely be met by the next quarterly report. Some unforeseen difficulties in certain characterization efforts and anomalies encountered in the data have caused unexpected delays. Most of these experimental difficulties, however, have been overcome and no serious problems are expected in future investigations.
