Book Contemporary Travel Writing of Latin America

Download or read book Contemporary Travel Writing of Latin America written by Claire Lindsay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach to travel writing about Latin America by examining ‘domestic’ journey narratives that have been produced by travellers from the continent itself and largely in Spanish. Historically, travel writing about Latin America has been written primarily from the perspective of the foreign, often European, traveller. As such, and following the large influx of military, scientific, and leisure travellers in the region since its colonisation, much of this foreign travel writing has depicted the continent in predominantly exoticist and/or imperialist terms. Lindsay explores how Latin American travellers have conceived and constructed narratives about travel at home and considers how such texts (many of them available in English translation or with subtitles) function to counter or corroborate long-standing myths about the continent. Through a series of regionally- and thematically-oriented case studies that engage with key issues, themes and debates in both Latin American and travel studies, Lindsay provides the first sustained interdisciplinary study of contemporary domestic travel narratives about the region and will also comprise an important intervention into methodological debates about travel and travel writing.

Book Stuck with Tourism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matilde Córdoba Azcárate
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2020-10-20
  • ISBN : 0520975553
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Stuck with Tourism written by Matilde Córdoba Azcárate and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has become one of the most powerful forces organizing the predatory geographies of late capitalism. It creates entangled futures of exploitation and dependence, extracting resources and labor, and eclipsing other ways of doing, living, and imagining life. And yet, tourism also creates jobs, encourages infrastructure development, and in many places inspires the only possibility of hope and well-being. Stuck with Tourism explores the ambivalent nature of tourism by drawing on ethnographic evidence from the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula, a region voraciously transformed by tourism development over the past forty years. Contrasting labor and lived experiences at the beach resorts of Cancún, protected natural enclaves along the Gulf coast, historical buildings of the colonial past, and maquilas for souvenir production in the Maya heartland, this book explores the moral, political, ecological, and everyday dilemmas that emerge when, as Yucatán’s inhabitants put it, people get stuck in tourism’s grip.

Book Guevara Also Known as Che

Download or read book Guevara Also Known as Che written by Paco Ignacio Taibo (II) and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 1999-08-19 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican novelist and historian Paco Ignacio Taibo II here captures the life and character of Che Guevara, the preeminent Latin-American revolutionary of the late twentieth century. The symbol of radical egalitarianism and the war against social injustice, Guevara was gunned down in the jungles of southeastern Bolivia in 1967, his death surrounded by questions that remain unanswered. In the years since he died, fascination with Che and his independent and pragmatic brand of Guerilla Marxism have become increasingly focused. Taibo, whose extensive contacts in Latin American political activism gives him unprecedented access to hitherto untapped sources, probes Che's life with a storyteller's pen and an historian's judgment. Delving into vast archives to which few researchers have entry, Taibo investigates the mystery and myth surrounding Che's life, careers, and ideals.

Book John Singer Sargent Watercolors

Download or read book John Singer Sargent Watercolors written by John Singer Sargent and published by Mfa Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Singer Sargents approach to watercolour was unconventional. Disregarding late-nineteenth-century aesthetic standards that called for carefully delineated and composed landscapes filled with transparent washes, his confidently bold, dense strokes and loosely defined forms startled critics and fellow practitioners alike. One reviewer in England, where Sargent spent much of his adult life, called his work swagger watercolours. For Sargent, however, the watercolours were not so much about swagger as about a new way of thinking. In watercolour as opposed to oils his vision became more personal and his works more interconnected. Presenting nearly 100 works of art, this book is the first major publication of Sargents watercolours in twenty years. Each chapter highlights a different subject or theme that attracted the artists attention during his travels through Europe and the Middle East: sunlight on stone, figures reclining on grass, patterns of light and shadow. Insightful essays by the worlds leading experts enhance this book and introduce readers to the full sweep of Sargents accomplishments in the medium, in works that delight the eye as well as challenge our understanding of this prodigiously gifted artist.

Book Constructing Reality in Comparative Theology

Download or read book Constructing Reality in Comparative Theology written by Paul S. Chung and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an examination of Christian interaction with other religions, Paul S. Chung constructs a theology of comparative religion. In the course of this construction, he employs the work of Ernst Troeltsch, Robert Bellah, and Karl Barth, while offering case studies of transformative interaction between Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Chung's interdisciplinary approach opens up avenues for the inter-religious understanding and melding, for instance exploring the development of a Protestant Islam. Throughout, he provides new conceptions of the religions involved and the realities they assert.
