Book excerpt: Cordoba, Spain. Travel Guide. Truly a treasure astonishing every visitor, Cordoba offers everything a visitor would expect from a major urban destination which is rich in history, culture and vitality. Cordoba once was the largest and probably the most beautiful city in the world. The city's present charm is largely tied to its Moorish past. Today, the city retains traces of the former glory. Numerous unique buildings, gardens, and museums make Córdoba one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Therefore, Córdoba is known as a top tourist destination throughout the nation and beyond. The former capital of the legendary Umayyade Caliphate is a living liability of different cultures that influenced the city and its development over the times. With respect of this liability, Cordoba's people always tied up history and presence. So ancient buildings were preserved and lovingly restored. However, the city has a modern infrastructure fitting the needs of the 21st century. One building alone is reason enough to put Córdoba high on your itinerary: the mesmerising multiarched Mezquita. One of the world's greatest Islamic buildings, the Mezquita is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe's biggest, most cultured city. But today's Córdoba is much more than the Mezquita. With a lot to see and do, some charming accommodation, and excellent restaurants and bars, it merits far more than the fleeting visit many travellers give it. Córdoba's real charms unfold as you explore the winding, stone-paved lanes of the medieval city to the west, north and east of the gaudy touristic area immediately around the Mezquita, wandering between wrought-iron balconies and lamps, potted plants, overhanging trees, golden-stone buildings and verdant interior patios, emerging every few minutes on yet another quaint little hidden plaza

Book Fragile Governance and Local Economic Development

Download or read book Fragile Governance and Local Economic Development written by Sergio Montero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of local economic development is based on large urban agglomerations as nodes of innovation and competitive advantage, connecting territories to global value chains. However, this framework cannot so easily be applied to peripheral regions and secondary cities in either the Global South or the North. This book proposes an alternative way of looking at local economic development based on the idea of fragile governance and three variables: associations and networks; learning processes; and leadership and conflict management in six Latin American peripheral regions. The case studies illustrate the challenges of governance in small and intermediate cities in Latin America, and showcase strategies that are being used to achieve a more resilient and territorial vision of local economic development. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of local economic development, urban and regional studies, and political economy in Latin America as well as to policy-makers and practitioners interested in local and regional economic development policy.

Download or read book Seville C rdoba and Granada written by Elizabeth Nash and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain's southern city of Seville basks in romantic myths and legends, evoking the scent of jasmine and orange blossom. But there is an ascetic core to its sybaritic spirit. For all their fame as passionate performers, the poet Unamuno called Sevillanos "finos y frios"-refined and cool. Once Europe's most cosmopolitan metropolis, bridging cultures of East and West and hub of a sea-borne empire, Seville was defined by Spain's great seventeenth-century playwright Lope de Vega as "port and gateway to the Indies". The city retains both the swagger of its seafaring heyday, and the sensual flavor of Moorish al-Andalus. Seville produced Spain's lowest ruffians, grandest grandees and a seductive gypsy culture that colors our wider perception of Spain. Elizabeth Nash explores the palaces, the mosques, the patios, fountains and wrought-iron balconies of Seville, Córdoba and Granada, cities celebrated for centuries by Europe's finest painters, poets, satirists and travel writers for their voluptuous beauty and vibrant cultural mix.
