Book Cordless Telecommunications in Europe

Download or read book Cordless Telecommunications in Europe written by Wally H.W. Tuttlebee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile telecommunications industry is experiencing consider able growth at present and with the increased traffic capacities which these systems provide and falling equipment prices, it is expected to continue to grow throughout the 1990s. Projections of equipment costs indicate that even portable cellular handsets could come within the reach of many customers well before the end of the century. This will transform mobile communications services from a minority, high cost application into a mainstream telecommunications service. For both market and technical reasons it is likely that the distinction between cellular, Telepoint and paging services will decrease, and the provision of common hardware in the form of a Universal Personal Communicator will become increasingly feasible. 1987 Green Paper on The European Commission's June Telecommunications included the proposal to create a European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This has resulted in a major reform of the European standards-setting process with the establishment of ETSI in March 1988 in Sophia-Antipolis, Nice, France. In the field of cordless telecommunications, ETSI has charged its Technical Sub-Committee RES 3 with producing the Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard by October 1991. In the meantime, the UK CT2 Common Air Interface (CAl) has been agreed by ETSI RES in March 1990 as the basis for an Interim European Telecommuni cations Standard (I-ETS) for Telepoint applications within Europe.

Book Provision of Cordless Telecommunications Services Using the Dect Standard of Cordless Telecommunications Services Using the Dect Standard

Download or read book Provision of Cordless Telecommunications Services Using the Dect Standard of Cordless Telecommunications Services Using the Dect Standard written by Theologos N. Kanaropoulos and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cordless telecommunications has become the focus of much research effort across Europe during the last six years in response to the widely recognised need for a new generation of digital radio systems to meet demand in the European single market for telecommunications products and services. The culmination of this effort will be the definition of a standard for Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and a first release of this standard has now been agreed. However, the standard is necessarily complex in order to accommodate the range of services which DECT terminals will need to support and the implementation of the standard in future products and the deployment of DECT systems in different operational environments remain important areas for further research. This thesis deals with the principal aspects of this problem through the medium of simulation by exploring in detail those features of the air-interface which are concerned with the radio access and the teletraffic service support. The simulator, described in Chapter 2, is designed for maximum flexibility in investigating many possible combinations of radio propagation environment, equipment characteristics, traffic demands and geographical configuration of base stations and user terminals. In the following Chapter, the effects of modifications to a wide range of call parameters are systematically investigated and the results used to establish performance bounds for DECT systems. Chapters 4 and 5 represent the major contribution to knowledge generated by the research. In Chapter 4 the simulator is used to investigate how various service requirements can be met within the framework of the DECT standard. Particular attention is devoted to ISDN compatibility for different combinations of voice and data traffic including full and half rate speech coding, 'homogenous' and 'heterogeneous' connections and asymmetric traffic requirements such as FAX. On the basis of this study, Chapter 5 tackles the problem of optimising the algorithms which may be implemented in future DECT systems to maximise system capability in the many different operating.

Book Telecommunications in Europe

Download or read book Telecommunications in Europe written by Eli Noam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-08-20 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications represents one of the largest high technology equipment and service industries in the world. Today there is growing support within the telecommunications industry for competition domestically and in world trade which is directly at odds with its distinctive political tradition of monopoly provision and minimally competitive international trade practices. This raises major questions, both for emerging public policy and for theorists concerned with the making of public policy. This particularly true for Europe, the focus of this study, where the reform of the telecommunications sector has proven one of the most vexing issues confronting the unification of the European Common Market. Noam's book is the first major attempt to address the complicated economic and policy issues of telecommunications in Europe. He provides a thorough discussion of the evolution of central telephone networks, equipment supply, new value-added networks, and new telecommunications-related services within the framework of a detailed country by country analysis. This highly accessible and comprehensive study will be of interest to students and professionals in the areas of communications, economics, and political science.

Book Voice and Audio Compression for Wireless Communications

Download or read book Voice and Audio Compression for Wireless Communications written by Lajos Hanzo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voice communications remains the most important facet of mobile radio services, which may be delivered over conventional fixed links, the Internet or wireless channels. This all-encompassing volume reports on the entire 50-year history of voice compression, on recent audio compression techniques and the protection as well as transmission of these signals in hostile wireless propagation environments. Audio and Voice Compression for Wireless and Wireline Communications, Second Edition is divided into four parts with Part I covering the basics, while Part II outlines the design of analysis-by-synthesis coding, including a 100-page chapter on virtually all existing standardised speech codecs. The focus of Part III is on wideband and audio coding as well as transmission. Finally, Part IV concludes the book with a range of very low rate encoding techniques, scanning a range of research-oriented topics. Fully updated and revised second edition of “Voice Compression and Communications”, expanded to cover Audio features Includes two new chapters, on narrowband and wideband AMR coding, and MPEG audio coding Addresses the new developments in the field of wideband speech and audio compression Covers compression, error resilience and error correction coding, as well as transmission aspects, including cutting-edge turbo transceivers Presents both the historic and current view of speech compression and communications. Covering fundamental concepts in a non-mathematical way before moving to detailed discussions of theoretical principles, future concepts and solutions to various specific wireless voice communication problems, this book will appeal to both advanced readers and those with a background knowledge of signal processing and communications.

Book European Telecommunications Liberalisation

Download or read book European Telecommunications Liberalisation written by Kjell A. Eliassen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the process and consequences of telecommunications liberalisation in the context of an ever closer European Union. The creation of a single market for telecommunications and of a wider European single market mirror one another. Telecommunications are also something of a test case for the privatisation process, as this sector has traditionally been a state monopoly. The volume approaches the European experience from three angles: * the politics of regulation and the process of liberalisation in the EU (including case studies of the UK, France, and Germany) * increasing global economic interdependence makes international comparisons essential, and the volume compares the EU experience with that of the Czech Republic, Israel and Thailand * the consequences of technology and continuous innovation
