The Joint Communication sets out proposals to intensify cooperation through partnerships in five key areas, one of which is the green transition. Europe will engage in discussions with African partners towards the development of a new joint strategy to be endorsed at the European Union-African Union Summit in October 2020. The CORDIS Results Pack showcases some of the cutting-edge projects in research and innovation that address water-related challenges in Africa, with a view to feedback on this and other, related joint European/African initiatives.

Book CORDIS Results Pack on Water Innovation

Download or read book CORDIS Results Pack on Water Innovation written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is the essence of life and its abundance is a crucial ingredient in a healthy environment. With climate change threatening water resources across the globe, maintaining a stable supply of water for both human consumption and the ecosystem as a whole is a major concern, and thus new technological solutions need to be developed and quickly put into action. This CORDIS Results Pack focuses on 10 EU-funded projects that are doing just that. Water is a precondition for human, animal and plant life as well as an indispensable resource for the economy. Water also plays a fundamental role in the climate regulation cycle. However, with the threat of ever-hotter and drier summers due to climate change (with one such summer being experienced across Europe in 2018), there are genuinely growing fears over how sustainable the water supply is and how easily it can be replenished. Whilst scarcity is a problem in some areas, climate change can also cause floods that can heavily damage the urban and rural environment. The European institutions are committed to ensuring Europe's future water security. This is a challenge that truly transcends national borders and cannot be solved by one country alone. Thus, a coordinated effort is necessary to guarantee effective protection of the EU's water sources. From a legislative perspective, the keystone of the EU's water protection policy is the EU water framework directive, which committed all Member States to protecting and enhancing freshwater resources with the aim of achieving a good status for EU waters. Its scope extends beyond lakes, rivers and groundwater to transitional and coastal waters. The main tools for implementing the directive are the River basin management plans (RBMPs) and the programmes of measures, which are prepared in six-year cycles. The EU's water legislation, including the water framework directive and related directives, the floods directive, as well as the urban waste water treatment directive, is currently under evaluation; this process will be completed by the end of 2019.

Book CORDIS Results Pack on Algae

Download or read book CORDIS Results Pack on Algae written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This CORDIS Results Pack highlights nine projects funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, investigating industrial processes and applications involving microalgae and seaweed. These include food, cosmetics, recycling, health and water quality. The pack also raises awareness of the importance of this growing economic sector among consumers. Algae provide an effective, sustainable, unlimited and almost entirely untapped resource for bio-based processes and products. Dense with energy and rich in nutrients, this natural product is ripe for exploitation by forward-thinking research organisations and commercial companies. An almost endless number of products may be produced from algae, thanks to the vast number of species, whose composition can be influenced by changing the cultivation conditions. They range from minute unicellular organisms that may be seen only through a microscope (microalgae) to multicellular forms (macroalgae), more commonly known as seaweed. The successful exploitation of algae can help solve unsustainable processes, thereby boosting the bioeconomy and aiding the transition to a more sustainable society and a cleaner, healthier environment. Furthermore, their use in a variety of commercial applications helps to reduce pressures on land-based products or non-renewable resources.

Book CORDIS Results Pack on Climate Services

Download or read book CORDIS Results Pack on Climate Services written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate services are capable of integrating climate information to support policymaking, planning and management on timescales that extend from months to decades. They are tailored to users' needs and provide additional information on concerns such as crop pests and disease, water management, insurance decisions, urban planning, maintenance and resilience of infrastructure and related investments, and healthcare management. Climate services have been a key research and innovation priority under Horizon 2020 with several call topics dedicated to advancing this area and further supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change, and the European Green Deal. This funding leverages on the wealth of data provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). It has been instrumental in the emergence of a climate services market through activities that generate economic value from available climate information, provide demonstrable benefits and solutions to society, make efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change more cost-effectively and, in turn, render the European economy more competitive.

Book Cognitive Hyperconnected Digital Transformation

Download or read book Cognitive Hyperconnected Digital Transformation written by Ovidiu Vermesan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive Hyperconnected Digital Transformation provides an overview of the current Internet of Things (IoT) landscape, ranging from research, innovation and development priorities to enabling technologies in a global context. It is intended as a standalone book in a series that covers the Internet of Things activities of the IERC-Internet of Things European Research Cluster, including both research and technological innovation, validation and deployment. The book builds on the ideas put forward by the European Research Cluster, the IoT European Platform Initiative (IoT-EPI) and the IoT European Large-Scale Pilots Programme, presenting global views and state-of-the-art results regarding the challenges facing IoT research, innovation, development and deployment in the next years. Hyperconnected environments integrating industrial/business/consumer IoT technologies and applications require new IoT open systems architectures integrated with network architecture (a knowledge-centric network for IoT), IoT system design and open, horizontal and interoperable platforms managing things that are digital, automated and connected and that function in real-time with remote access and control based on Internet-enabled tools. The IoT is bridging the physical world with the virtual world by combining augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to support the physical-digital integrations in the Internet of mobile things based on sensors/actuators, communication, analytics technologies, cyber-physical systems, software, cognitive systems and IoT platforms with multiple functionalities. These IoT systems have the potential to understand, learn, predict, adapt and operate autonomously. They can change future behaviour, while the combination of extensive parallel processing power, advanced algorithms and data sets feed the cognitive algorithms that allow the IoT systems to develop new services and propose new solutions. IoT technologies are moving into the industrial space and enhancing traditional industrial platforms with solutions that break free of device-, operating system- and protocol-dependency. Secure edge computing solutions replace local networks, web services replace software, and devices with networked programmable logic controllers (NPLCs) based on Internet protocols replace devices that use proprietary protocols. Information captured by edge devices on the factory floor is secure and accessible from any location in real time, opening the communication gateway both vertically (connecting machines across the factory and enabling the instant availability of data to stakeholders within operational silos) and horizontally (with one framework for the entire supply chain, across departments, business units, global factory locations and other markets). End-to-end security and privacy solutions in IoT space require agile, context-aware and scalable components with mechanisms that are both fluid and adaptive. The convergence of IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) makes security and privacy by default a new important element where security is addressed at the architecture level, across applications and domains, using multi-layered distributed security measures. Blockchain is transforming industry operating models by adding trust to untrusted environments, providing distributed security mechanisms and transparent access to the information in the chain. Digital technology platforms are evolving, with IoT platforms integrating complex information systems, customer experience, analytics and intelligence to enable new capabilities and business models for digital business.
