Book Ethnobiology of Corals and Coral Reefs

Download or read book Ethnobiology of Corals and Coral Reefs written by Nemer Narchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ethnobiology of corals by examining the various ways in which humans, past and present, have exploited and taken care of coral and coralline habitats. This book will bring the educated general audience closer to corals by exploring the various circumstances of human-coral coexistence by providing scientifically sound and jargon-free perspectives and experiences from across the globe. Corals are a vital part of the marine environment since they promote and sustain marine and global biodiversity while providing numerous other environmental and cultural services. Countless valuable coral conservation efforts are published in academic and general audience venues on a daily basis. However relevant, few of these reports show a direct, deeper understanding of the intimate relationship between people and corals throughout the world’s societies. Ethnobiology of Corals and Coral Reefs establishes an intimate bond between the audience and the wonder of corals and their importance to humankind.

Book A World of Earrings

Download or read book A World of Earrings written by Anne van Cutsem and published by Skira. This book was released on 2001 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of a multi-volume series on the Gbysels collection -- probably the most comprehensive and beautiful collection of ethnic jewelry in the world -- presents nearly 800 extraordinary objects, most of which have never been shown to the public before, coming from Africa, Asia and America. Since time immemorial, earrings have been a means of seduction for women. Craftsmen the world over have set their imaginations to work, using every available material. Firstly they used flowers and grass, feathers and horns, wood, shells, and ivory. Mines and alluvional deposits offered stones and metals. Bold travellers and adventurous sailors set off in search of exotic goods. Their symbolism is also rich and complex: for the Kikuyu tribe in Kenya, a person's prestige is measured by the number of ear ornaments, as long as their lobes can stand without tearing. Statues of Buddha show him with long ears. In the archipelagos of Indonesia, the suitor's family offers earrings to seal an alliance. Leather earrings with pearls are a sign of a married woman's status for Masai. In the Philippines and among the Naga headhunters, the men's hunting exploits and prowess as warriors are embodied in the jewellery theywear on their ears.

Book Ethnic Jewellery

Download or read book Ethnic Jewellery written by John Mack and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic Jewellery is a beautifully illustrated survey of traditional jewellery covering:AfricaThe Middle EastIndiaThe Far EastThe PacificPre-Columbian AmericaLatin America (Indian)North American (Indian)Materials and TechniquesThe colour and exuberance of traditional jewellery have always attracted collectors and travellers. African beadwork, North American Indian silver, jade from the Far East and shellwork from the Pacific - these are just some of the beautiful pieces surveyed in this book. A team of experts explains how such jewellery has been made and worn, the relationship of the materials to the culture, and how the techniques of manufacture have survived for centuries. Even today traditional jewellery is still being made, although the repertoire is constantly enriched by new materials and influenced by modern taste. The majority of objects selected to illustrate the book are from the British Museum's extensive collections. Yet the book is much more than simply a guide to these collections, and the authors reflect in the various chapters on the types of materials, technological features, and the themes that characterise the regions of which they have a specialist knowledge, so that the book serves as an excellent introduction to the subject as a whole.

Book History of Customs in the Ming Dynasty

Download or read book History of Customs in the Ming Dynasty written by Li Shi and published by DeepLogic. This book was released on with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “History of Customs in the Ming Dynasty” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.
