Book Coqu in the City

Download or read book Coqu in the City written by Nomar Perez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartfelt picture book based on the author-illustrator's own experiences, about a boy who moves to the U.S. mainland from Puerto Rico and realizes that New York City might have more in common with San Juan than he initially thought. Miguel's pet frog, Coquí, is always with him: as he greets his neighbors in San Juan, buys quesitos from the panadería, and listens to his abuelo's story about meeting baseball legend Roberto Clemente. Then Miguel learns that he and his parents are moving to the U.S. mainland, which means leaving his beloved grandparents, home in Puerto Rico, and even Coquí behind. Life in New York City is overwhelming, with unfamiliar buildings, foods, and people. But when he and Mamá go exploring, they find a few familiar sights that remind them of home, and Miguel realizes there might be a way to keep a little bit of Puerto Rico with him--including the love he has for Coquí--wherever he goes.

Book Municipalities and Multiculturalism

Download or read book Municipalities and Multiculturalism written by Kristin Good and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian model of diversity management is considered a success in the international community, yet the methods by which these policies are adopted by local governments have seldom been studied. Municipalities and Multiculturalism explores the role of the municipality in integrating immigrants and managing the ethno-cultural relations of the city. Throughout the study, Kristin R. Good uses original interviews with close to 100 local leaders of eight municipalities in Toronto and Vancouver, two of Canada's most diverse urban and suburban areas. Grounded by Canada's official multiculturalism policies, she develops a typology of responsiveness to immigrants and ethno-cultural minorities and offers an explanation for policy variations among municipalities. Municipalities and Multiculturalism is an important examination of the differing diversity management methods in Canadian cities, and ultimately contributes to debates concerning the roles that municipal governments should play within Canada's political system.

Book excerpt: A powerful story about home, community, and hope, inspired by the rebuilding of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria in 2017, written by debut author Karina González and illustrated by Krystal Quiles. "This book is more than beautiful." - Yuyi Morales, Caldecott Honoree and New York Times bestselling creator of Dreamers Co-quí, co-quí! The coquí frogs sing to Elena from her family’s beloved mango tree—their calls so familiar that they might as well be singing, “You are home, you are safe.” But home is suddenly not safe when a hurricane threatens to destroy everything that Elena knows. As time passes, Elena, alongside her community, begins to rebuild their home, planting seeds of hope along the way. When the sounds of the coquíes gradually return, they reflect the resilience and strength of Elena, her family, and her fellow Puerto Ricans. The Coquies Still Sing is also available in Spanish.

Book Global Planning Innovations for Urban Sustainability

Download or read book Global Planning Innovations for Urban Sustainability written by Sébastien Darchen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world becomes more urbanised, solutions are required to solve current challenges for three arenas of sustainability: social sustainability, environmental sustainability and urban economic sustainability. This edited volume interrogates innovative solutions for sustainability in cities around the world. The book draws on a group of 12 international case studies, including Vancouver and Calgary in Canada, San Francisco and Los Angeles in the US (North America), Yogyakarta in Indonesia, Seoul in Korea (South-East Asia), Medellin in Colombia (South America), Helsinki in Finland, Freiburg in Germany and Seville in Spain (Europe). Each case study provides key facts about the city, presents the particular urban sustainability challenge and the planning innovation process and examines what trade-offs were made between social, environmental and economic sustainability. Importantly, the book analyses to what extent these planning innovations can be translated from one context to another. This book will be essential reading to students, academics and practitioners of urban planning, urban sustainability, urban geography, architecture, urban design, environmental sciences, urban studies and politics.
