This book was released on 1786 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains an issue with Major Pierre L'Enfant and the Society of Cincinnati. Major L'Enfant was sent to France to present Eagles to the French members of the society, at the society's expense. Was granted a sum of money for the purpose, but in his zeal to serve the society, he had more than 100 extra Eagles cast by the artist there, Mr. Francastle (goldsmith Nicolas-Jean Francastel). When he returned to America, he found that the society could not reimburse the extra expense, and the Eagles were not selling. The debt could ruin the Major, and Knox is concerned for him, as well as for the reputation of the society. Has discussed it with the Major and he would like to wait till the next society meeting, which will be in May 1787, and hopes that an inquiry will find that he was acting appropriately and help him with the debt. Would like Washington's opinion on the subject. Knox's retained draft.

Thanks Lafayette for the kind treatment given to his brother William. Discusses the affair of Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant, who had been sent to France in 1783 to purchase jeweled eagle badges for the members of the Society of the Cincinnati. L'Enfant returned to America in 1784 and brought back many badges purchased on credit. The price proved too high for some officers, which left L'Enfant in a bind. Goes on to say that the Society approved of L'Enfant's conduct and owed 630 dollars to him for his services in France, which Knox says was recently offered to him. L'Enfant refused the payment until the entire issue of the badges purchased on credit is cleared up with the Society. Says L'Enfant will write to Lafayette. Reports he will keep Washington informed. Written on lined paper with an embossed image of a building on the upper left corner.

This book was released on 1781 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argues against Congress's decision to discontinue the post at Fishkill, commanded by John Ruddock, Deputy Commissary of Military Stores. Its proximity to West Point and to army in the field, as well as the armory located on site, renders the post indispensable to Knox. Also expresses opposition to moving the stores from Fishkill to West Point. With Respect to the dismission of Mr Ruddock, I can have nothing to say, but that it is a disagreeable service indeed where a man after six years faithful services, without the imputation of an official crime that I know shall be dismis'd, with almost his whole pay due for four years, and that at a time when there are not... more officers of his station than are wanted. Knox's working draft.

Book Copy of a Letter from Henry Knox to Sir Guy Carleton with a Note to George Washington 31 July 1782

This book was released on 1782 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First two pages are from an unsigned letter written by Major General Knox to General Carleton, the commander of the British Army. The third page is a signed note to Washington on 31 July 1782. It references Carleton's previous letter which contained a request for a passport to be forwarded to Chief Justice Smyth so he could bring the trial transcript and his explanatory comments to the Americans. This is probably a reference to the court martial proceedings against Lippincott, who the Americans claimed was responsible for the killing of Captain Joshua Huddy. Hopes that Carleton will punish the perpetrators of the murder. Questions why a civil judge's explanations and comments are needed in this matter of military justice. Says he has no equivalent person to deal with Smyth, so asks that someone with a military background be sent. Appoints General [William] Heath to communicate with whoever is sent. The note to Washington says he is passing this along to keep him informed. This was all responding to received trial proceedings and a proposal from Carleton on handling the matter.
