Book The Literary Coptic Manuscripts in the A S Pushkin State Fine Arts Museum in Moscow

Download or read book The Literary Coptic Manuscripts in the A S Pushkin State Fine Arts Museum in Moscow written by Alla Ivanovna Elanskaâ and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a first publication of the entire collection of literary Coptic manuscripts in the A. S. Pushkin State Fine Arts Museum in Moscow. This collection of Coptic mss. is the most important in Russia, leaving far behind those of the National Library and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The mss. were brought together between 1870 and 1907 by the distinguished Russian Egyptologist Vladimir Golenischev. The collection, comprising 61 items, derives in part from the famous White Monastery's Library near Achmim. It represents all the genres characteristic of Coptic literature: Vitae, martyrdoms, legends, encomia, homilies, didactic works, treatises, discourses, polemic works, poetical pieces, pseudepigrapha, as well as the Coptic versions of the Bible (fragments). Some of the mss. are of exceptional importance, such as a fourth-century fragment of Luke's Gospel and a cosmogonical theological treatise dealing with the symbolism of baptism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven Manichaean papyrus codices of the fourth or fifth century were discovered in illicit excavation in 1929 in the Egyptian desert. Having had access to the inventories, correspondence, and files in Berlin, Robinson provides translations of the German and French documents to increase access to information previously unavailable tothe scholarly community. He narrates the slow and problem-ridden path of the acquisition, conservation, and editing of these important works, including their movements between dealers, collectors, scholars, and the military in Egypt, London, Dublin,Berlin, Schondorf, Gottingen, Warsaw, Leningrad, Los Angeles, Claremont, and Copenhagen.

Book The Christian Liturgical Papyri An Introduction

Download or read book The Christian Liturgical Papyri An Introduction written by Ágnes T. Mihálykó and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liturgical papyri are prime witnesses to the history of liturgy and the religious and theological currents in late antique Egypt. These items from the third to ninth century preserve hundreds of Greek and Coptic hymns, prayers, and acclamations, most otherwise unknown but some still recited by the Coptic Church. Agnes T. Mihalyko offers the first extensive introduction to the liturgical papyri, facilitating the reader's access to them with a detailed inventory of edited manuscripts and an extensive discussion of their date and provenance. She also examines liturgical papyri as the first preserved liturgical manuscripts, describing their material features, the ways they were used, the early history of the liturgical books, and their languages. She reveals how liturgical texts were written down and transmitted and locates these important manuscripts in the book culture of late antique Egypt.
