Book excerpt: A young mans struggle with conscience when his country is ripped apart and his hometown wages war on itself. In 1860, handsome and wealthy Princeton graduate Chadwick Wales foresees a bright future with his childhood sweetheart, the beautiful and rich New Yorker Clarissa Renfield. But his mother, a New England textile heiress, has kept dark secrets from him and faces a scandalous divorce from Chads loyal Virginian father. Sensing Chads inner conflict over secession, a charismatic Southerner introduces him to the Copperheads, Northerners who favor the South and plan to fi rebomb Manhattan. Chads probing intellect and his revulsion for war trap him in a conspiracy that threatens his life, his liberty, his betrothal and his soul. Both the glittering surface and the squalid underside of New York City during the American Civil War are brought to life, from yachts and mansions to tenements and brothels. Brutal riots, Wall Street hoaxes and unspeakable human catastrophe expose and refute the persistent myth of Americas past. C. D. Webbs previous novels include Jake and Jasmine (cited as one of the top ten genre novels of the year) and The Credence of Christopher Craig (according to a notice in the Midwest Book Review, Christopher Craig is a good book. It might even be a great book.)

Download or read book The Book of Snakes written by Mark O'Shea and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to reflect the most recent species classifications, a second edition of the beautifully illustrated and beloved guide to 600 members of the suborder Serpentes. For millennia, humans have regarded snakes with an exceptional combination of fascination and revulsion. Some people recoil in fear at the very suggestion of these creatures, while others happily keep them as pets. Snakes can convey both beauty and menace in a single tongue flick, and so these creatures have held a special place in our cultures. Yet, for as many meanings as we attribute to snakes—from fertility and birth to sin and death—the real-life species represent an even wider array of wonders. Now in a new edition, reflecting the most recent species classifications, The Book of Snakes presents 600 species of snakes from around the world, covering roughly one in seven of all snake species. It will bring greater understanding of a group of reptiles that have existed for more than 160 million years and that now inhabit every continent except Antarctica, as well as two of the great oceans. This volume pairs spectacular photos with easy-to-digest text. It is the first book on these creatures that combines a broad, worldwide sample with full-color, life-size accounts. Entries include close-ups of the snake’s head and a section of the snake at actual size. The detailed images allow readers to examine the intricate scale patterns and rainbow of colors as well as special features like a cobra’s hood or a rattlesnake’s rattle. The text is written for laypeople and includes a glossary of frequently used terms. Herpetologists and herpetoculturists alike will delight in this collection, and even those with a more cautious stance on snakes will find themselves drawn in by the wild diversity of the suborder Serpentes.
Download or read book Reptiles of Victoria written by Peter Robertson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria's reptiles are not often encountered by urban dwellers, with many species now threatened. You may have glimpsed a skink darting into the undergrowth, a snake slithering along a walking path or a blue-tongued lizard sunning itself near your garden shed. Yet the turtles, skinks, geckos, goannas, snakes and other reptiles that call Victoria home are fascinating and important members of urban and rural ecosystems. Reptiles of Victoria is the first regional guide to all reptiles known to occur in Victoria. It contains keys and illustrated descriptions to allow identification of the 123 native, introduced and vagrant reptile species and describes their biology, ecology, distributions and the habitats in which they live. It also indicates the level of risk that the venomous snakes pose to humans and includes a brief section on first aid for snake bites. Natural history enthusiasts and professional and amateur herpetologists will find this an essential guide.

Download or read book Venomous Animals and Their Venoms written by Wolfgang Bücherl and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venomous Animals and Their Venoms, Volume II: Venomous Vertebrates is a collection of papers that describes the chemistry and biochemistry of snake, batrachian, and fish venoms. These papers discuss their pharmacological actions, their antigenic properties, and their medical aspects such as symptomatology and therapy. Papers describe the pharmacology and toxicology of the venoms of Asiatic, Australian, and Melanesian snakes including the cobra, the common Krait, the saw-scaled viper. One paper presents the pathology, symptomatology, treatment of snake bites in Australia, and the use of an antivenin schedule when the type of snake is not known. Some papers tackle the distribution of snakes in North America, and compare the biochemistry of Miliarius barbouri and Sistrurus catenatus which are subspecies of rattlesnakes. Other papers describe the biology and venom of the Arizona Gila monster and of the Mexican Gila monster. The basic substances in toad venom are from bases present in the glands, their secretions or on their skin. In treating stings from venomous fishes, one paper recommends the use of suction to remove the venom or soaking the injured part in hot water. This collection can be helpful for physicians, veterinarians, toxicologists, pharmacologists, chemists, and researchers in animal bites and injuries.
