What should have been a quiet summer soon turns dramatic--and deadly. Meritta, an outspoken local artist, plunges to her death from the copper mine's tower, and Maria immediately suspects someone helped her fall. Book Copper Bioavailability and Metabolism

Download or read book Copper Bioavailability and Metabolism written by C Kies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrition is truly a science of the 20th century. That physiological disabilities could be caused by a lack of exogenous substances which could be supplied by foods is a concept of relatively recent origins. It is not surprising, therefore, that, until the last few years, much of nutritional science research was tied to: 1) establishing a cause and effect relationship between a physiological problem and its cure/prevention by a chemical substance in food; 2) quantifying the amount of the substance (nutrient) needed to prevent deficiency symptoms; and 3) quantifying the amounts of nutrients found in various food substances. That a nutrient might be present in apparently adequate amounts in foods consumed by an individual but could not be fully utilized because of the concurrent consumption of anti-nutrients has been recognized as being an important problem as, for example, iodine-deficiency goiters resulting from consumption of gOitrigens. That less specific, less dramatic interactions among nutrients and among nutrients and other food components might enhance or inhibit the absorption of nutrients from the intestines or of the metabolism of nutrients within the body is an area of current concern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stressed Heart is truly unique in concept and will provide an eXCItmg adventure to the reader no matter what his or her field of expertise and interest. The title, although quite appropriate, does not adequately indicate the range of topics considered or the rational interrelationships among them. Indeed, perhaps the most important point to be learned from the book is that a serious consideration of the response of the heart to mechanical overload, ischemia, or excessive humoral stimuli must include evaluation of each of the topics in the table of contents. The heart responds to stress through alterations in both structure and function. How these changes are brought about is the subject of the initial chapters. These consider first the normal regulation of gene expression in the heart, the rapid response to mechanical overload that leads to both quantitative and qualitative changes in the contractile proteins, and our current understand ing of the signals that might be elicited by stress and alter gene expression. One chapter emphasizes the fact that, regardless of the nature of the stress, the common denominator is a discrepancy between energy requirements and expenditure. The central role of cellular acidosis in initiating the sequence of responses to stress and the possible roles of peptide regulators of transcription and protein regulators of translation are considered in detail.

Book Prehistoric Copper Mining in Michigan

Download or read book Prehistoric Copper Mining in Michigan written by John R. Halsey and published by U OF M MUSEUM ANTHRO ARCHAEOLOGY. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isle Royale and the counties that line the northwest coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are called Copper Country because of the rich deposits of native copper there. In the nineteenth century, explorers and miners discovered evidence of prehistoric copper mining in this region. They used those “ancient diggings” as a guide to establishing their own, much larger mines, and in the process, destroyed the archaeological record left by the prehistoric miners. Using mining reports, newspaper accounts, personal letters, and other sources, this book reconstructs what these nineteenth-century discoverers found, how they interpreted the material remains of prehistoric activity, and what they did with the stone, wood, and copper tools they found at the prehistoric sites. “This volume represents an exhaustive compilation of the early written and published accounts of mines and mining in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It will prove a valuable resource to current and future scholars. Through these early historic accounts of prospectors and miners, Halsey provides a vivid picture of what once could be seen.” —John M. O’Shea, curator of Great Lakes Archaeology, University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology

Book 72 Celestial Logbooks of the Gold and Copper Invaders

Download or read book 72 Celestial Logbooks of the Gold and Copper Invaders written by Donald J. McMahon Symbologist and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 72: Celestial Logbooks of the Gold and Copper Invaders describes the bright celestial objects that were used for calendars and navigation for the last 10,000 years. This required counting and measuring angles which the prehistory and even pre-Ice Age cultures knew. This enabled these cultures to hunt, gather, and explore by boat looking for precious metals to sustain their cultures. Initial editorial reviews: "WOW, Magnificent, Beyond Significant." Jim Egan, Curator, Newport Tower Museum: "Brilliant out of the box thinking." A past Kirkus Review stated: "...McMahon's reasoning is far from far-fetched... with an elegantly simple process of following history's clues...the ancient rock art symbols of seafaring communication." Lonnie Davis, Curator Historian, Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, "Eye-opening .... The blinders finally came off!" The following bright celestial objects are described and analyzed: Sun: circles, rectangles, diamonds, spirals, and solstice latitudes Moon: crescents, circles, rectangles, and lunar standstill latitudes Venus (72): hearts, rectangles, pentagons, and relative longitudes Sirius and Canopus: the eyes as pointer stars to the North and South Pole stars North Pole stars: Polaris, Thuban, Vega, and Deneb as the golden 30° rectangle Winter Triangle: Orion, the hunter, and his dogs, the equilateral triangle Summer Navigation Triangle: Northern Cross as passageways and chronometers Golden Location Triangle: Libra, le Balance, what is shipped is received The celestial object's geometries were built into a culture's mound and temple structures becoming celestial observatories. These were sacred because they represented information concerning the locations of mines, storage facilities, harbors, temples, and "home." Geometric diffusionism came from the westward-bound seafaring explorers with their roots coming from the Fertile Crescent. Celestial counting and geometries form a universal calendar and navigation language. The rock art shows the actual relative latitudes to the Sun solstices and Venus-based relative longitudes to a prime starting location of island locations (stargates) that were associated with the seafaring trips in search of gold and copper.

Lipids are essential components of our diet, highlighting their important contribution in energy, representing 9 kcal/g (or 37.7 kJ/g), and by some components relevant to the metabolism, such as essential fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins and sterols (cholesterol and phytosterols). This book presents a systematic and comprehensive review about the structure and metabolism of lipids, particularly highlighting the importance of these molecules in the body and considering the interest of some lipids in health and disease.
