Book excerpt: The development of synthetic reactions that are efficient for the construction of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds is an important goal in contemporary organic and inorganic synthetic chemistry. Late-transition metal carbenes and nitrenes serve as highly valuable synthetic intermediates for useful catalytic transformations such as the [2 + 1] addition to olefins to give cyclopropanes and aziridines respectively. The direct and selective functionalization of C-H bonds to C-C or C-N bonds is also known to proceed via the intermediacy of such key intermediates. The quest for the identification of such valuable catalytic intermediates has been proven difficult due to their general thermal instability and high reactivity. Herein we describe the isolation and characterization of discrete copper carbene and nitrene species that exhibit electrophilic character and can undergo catalytic group transfer reactions with nucleophilic substrates. The synthesis of a family of dinuclear copper(I) beta-diketiminate arene complexes that can activate organoazides has led to the stabilization of diverse nitrene [NR] ligands (R = aryl, aliphatic, acyl) and the crystallographic characterization of discrete dicopper nitrene complexes. The detailed synthetic studies allowed us to uncover a unique and an efficient copper catalyzed C-H amination protocol using organoazides as a nitrene precursor. High turnover numbers (900) can be achieved for the amination of ethylbenzene. A novel 'C-H' protected robust betadiketiminato copper(I) catalyst was synthesized and was found to catalyze nitrene [NR] insertion into C-H bonds of hydrocarbons, ethers and aldehydes. The rate of C-H amination is strongly correlated to the strength of the reacting C-H bond and was found dependent on the choice of nitrene [NR] substituent. Copper-catalyzed amination reactions of several C-H substrates with aryl azides and benzoyl azide were undertaken. The first three-coordinate Cu(II) primary amido species were isolated and characterized and were shown to be highly reactive towards C-H bonds. The ability to study metal-stabilized carbene and nitrene species provides many valuable insights towards its diverse reactivity pathways and opens an avenue for the development of novel catalytic processes.

Book excerpt: Carbenes, nitrenes, and arynes are of great interest to chemists because of the central role they play, as the key intermediates, in a wide range of chemical reactions. Their study has illuminated many aspects of synthetic and mechanistic chemistry. Their organic chemistry has developed enormously over the last ten to fifteen years so that now a fairly clear pattern of reactions and reactivity, strikingly similar for all three, has emerged. Partly because of this, but also because of the many unsolved problems and gaps in our present knowledge, it now seems appropriate to present a comparative account of their chemistry. Our approach is a simple, descriptive one that nevertheless attempts to bring the reader as nearly up-to-date as possible; there is considerable emphasis on recent work in the text and the problems. We have been selective rather than comprehensive, have concentrated on underlying principles, and have tried to emphasize what can, and what cannot, reasonably be claimed on the basis of the available experimental evidence. (The development of this area of organic chemistry could weil serve as a cauti'onary tale in this respect. ) We have written the book primarily at the advanced student level but it should also be useful to postgraduates students and to more experienced chemists. Some of the problems are at a rather more advanced level, the aim being to extend the reader's knowledge and understanding and to direct him to some recent originalliterature.
