Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE? Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a condition in which your mitral valve bows or flops again into your left atrium. That's why it's now and again known as "floppy valve syndrome." This floppiness may also prevent your valve from remaining as tightly closed as it should. MVP is a common form of mitral valve disorder, and often it's innocent. Many human beings have no signs or symptoms and don't even know they have them. That's due to the fact that their valve can nonetheless function well. But some humans with moderate or excessive prolapse have signs and may need treatment. The primary difficulty in MVP is mitral regurgitation. This indicates blood leaks the incorrect way through your valve. MVP is one of the most common causes of mitral regurgitation. If the leak is severe enough, you can want a surgical operation or a method to help your valve work because it has to. WHAT'S A LEAKY CORONARY HEART VALVE? The coronary heart has four valves that open and close while the heart beats. They manage blood flow with the flow through the 4 chambers of the heart in order that blood goes in the most effective direction. But a valve may not close nicely, and we could send blood via That's referred to as a "leaky heart valve," "coronary heart valve regurgitation," or "valve insufficiency." With a leaky valve, occasionally not enough blood gets pumped to relax the body. Coronary heart valve leakage or regurgitation can press the heart to work harder to do its job. The condition can lead to coronary heart failure, surprising cardiac arrest, and loss of life. are there exceptional varieties of leaky valves? A leaking heart valve can arise in any of the four heart valves: aortic valve between the left ventricle and the aorta (an important artery inside the body). Mitral valve, among the left atrium and the left ventricle pulmonary valve, between the proper ventricle and the pulmonary artery. tricuspid valve, between the proper atrium and the right ventricle. How common is heart valve leakage? Leaky heart valves are pretty common. About 10% of the total population has one. Mitral valve regurgitation is the most common kind. Moderate cases of leaking generally do not cause any symptoms or problems.

Book Comprehensive Insights into Mitral Valve Prolapse From biology to future perspectives of treatment passing through diagnostic tools surgical techniques and transcatheter options

Download or read book Comprehensive Insights into Mitral Valve Prolapse From biology to future perspectives of treatment passing through diagnostic tools surgical techniques and transcatheter options written by Christophe Tribouilloy and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitral valve prolapse (MVP), consisting of an abnormal protrusion of mitral leaflets into the left atrium, is the main cause of severe mitral regurgitation and it often requires surgical or interventional correction. It mainly represents a typical adult disease with an average prevalence in industrialized countries ranging from 2 to 8%, but even the pediatric population may be affected showing specific features concerning both anatomy and treatment. Although its existence and clinical characteristics are known for several decades, every aspect of this pathological condition is in continuous evolution, being the subject of biologists’, cardiologists’ and surgeons’ active research. The aim of the present Research Topic is to address the MVP entity in its completeness, trying to describe all actual knowledge concerning molecular mechanisms, different clinical presentations (fibroelastic degeneration in elderly people or Barlow disease in young patients), diagnostic findings and tools (mainly represented by echocardiography and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), their specific application to newly developed transcatheter and minimally invasive treatments, indications, surgical management and interventional strategies. For all these big chapters, special attention will be addressed to show temporal knowledge evolution and new elements acquisition, since the central message is that MVP is in flux and far from full comprehension.

Book Secondary Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Download or read book Secondary Mitral Valve Regurgitation written by Khalil Fattouch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ischemic or idiopathic mitral valve disease (so called secondary mitral valve regurgitation) is a rather new concept. This topic is deeply polarizing the attention of the cardiologist and cardiothoracic community. Although there is an impressive amount of efforts to understand the etiology, mechanism, treatment and prognostic factors, still clear indications and guide-lines are missing. Therefore this group of patients lie in a grey-area and physicians looking after them cannot count on proper recommendations. The main purpose of this book is to review the most relevant knowledge about secondary mitral valve regurgitation, from the anatomy, definition, classification, diagnosis and prevalence to the up-to-date surgical and medical management.

Download or read book Mitral Valve written by Harisios Boudoulas and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2000-06-23 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the entire spectrum of the floppy mitral valve/mitral valve prolapse/mitral valve regurgitation triad. Few cardiac disorders have generated as much controversy and discussion over the last two centuries as the floppy mitral valve (FMV)/ mitral valve proplapse (MVP)/ mitral valvular regurgitation (MVR) triad, and the mitral valve prolapse syndrome. During the past 50 years, recognition of its broad pathologic and clinical spectrum has led to the appreciation of the FMV as the central issue in the FMV/MVP/MVR story. Accordingly, the clinical phenomena and imaging characteristics inherent in the FMV/MVP/MVR triad will be best understood when reconciled with the gross morphologic, histopathologic, and molecular characteristics of the FMV complex. This book is written to cover the entire spectrum of FMV and its sequlae. The inheritance patterns, genetic studies, and development of family pedigrees; the relations of pathology and histology to FMV and clinical functional expression; and the broad range of clinical presentation, are all examined in depth. Complications (i.e. infective endocarditis, thromboembolic phenomena, arrhythmias, progressive MVR, chordae tendinae rupture, and left atrial and left ventricular dysfunction) are discussed in detail. Insights into the mechanisms of circulatory abnormalities and their impact on clinical phenomenon are also explored. Therapeutic approaches, including medical management and the indications and role of cardiac surgery, are highlighted. Finally, a clinically useful classification for FMV/MVP patients is proposed. This book will be of interest to all cardiologists, including clinical investigators, morphologists, physiologists, pathologists, surgeons, cardiac imagers, internists, family physicians, pediatricians, and nurse clinicians, and importantly, to discerning patients and individuals in search of information about the FMV/MVP/MVR triad.

Book excerpt: "Valvular heart disease is increasingly prevalent in the aging population. Mitral regurgitation (MR) and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) both affect up to 10% of individuals over 75 years and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. Transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER) is indicated in patients with symptomatic MR deemed high-risk for mitral valve surgery. The procedure is being performed more frequently, highlighting the critical importance of optimizing its planning, execution, and effectiveness. Concomitant TR is often present in those with significant MR (mainly due to pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular pressure or volume overload) and is known to affect outcome after TEER. Isolated TR is mostly functional in its etiology as a result of annular dilatation and right ventricular remodeling. Most patients with significant TR are deemed high risk for surgery due to the presence of right ventricular dysfunction, advanced age, and other comorbidities. Until recently, these patients could only be treated with medical therapy. Transcatheter edge-to-edge tricuspid valve repair is now available as well. In this thesis, we investigated (1) clinical decision making for TEER, (2) potential tools to optimize TEER, (3) the role of concomitant TR in MR patients, and (4) the early experience of transcatheter edge-to-edge TV repair."--
