Book excerpt: How do we fix the leaky educational pipeline into a conduit of success for Black males?That the issue is critical is demonstrated by the statistics that only 10% of Black males in the United States are proficient in 8th grade reading, only 52% graduate from high school within four years, and only 35 percent graduate from college.This book uniquely examines the trajectory of Black males through the educational pipeline from pre-school through college. In doing so it not only contributes significantly to the scholarship on the experiences of this population, but bridges the gap between theory and practice to provide frameworks and models that will improve these young men’s educational outcomes throughout their educational journeys.A compelling feature of the book is that that it does not treat Black males as homogeneous, but recognizes the diversity that exists among Black males in various educational settings. It demonstrates the need to recognize students’ intersectionalities and individual characteristics as an essential preliminary to developing practices to improve outcomes at every educational stage.Throughout, the contributing authors also focus on the strategies and experiences of Black males who achieve academic excellence, examining growth-producing and asset-based practices that can be sustained, and that build upon the recognition that these males have agency and possess qualities such as resilience that are essential to their learning and development. The frameworks and models that conclude each chapter are equally commendable to K–12 educators and administrators; higher education faculty, student affairs practitioners, and administrators; and policymakers, for whom templates are provided for rectifying the continuing inequities of our educational system.

This study sought to better understand the impact of specific factors--social support, racial identity, perceived racial discrimination, coping, and religious coping--on the academic achievement of African American male college student achievement. Using secondary data and a Multiple Linear Regression analyses, the project investigated relationships among these influences as a way of uncovering strategies used to mitigate obstacles faced by African American males attending Predominantly White Institutions. The study used an anti-deficit achievement approach to examine how African American male college students at two PWIs negotiate experiences and the use of coping mechanisms that may positively affect academic achievement for this subgroup of students. Results of the study indicate that the college experiences and coping mechanisms examined have a limited impact on GPA for African American male students. The results indicate that higher education professionals should focus attention on providing avenues for African American male students to express religious and other coping techniques to assist in achievement and to better manage the effects of discrimination and isolation that are part of their transition to PWIs. Future research on African American male college student achievement should include a broader sample group from various campus types to increase the generalizability of the findings.

Book excerpt: African American men complete post-secondary education among the lowest rates of any other subgroup in higher education (Brooms & Davis, 2017; Farmer & Hope, 2015; Palmer, Wood, Dancy, & Strayhorn, 2014; Warde, 2008). This study focuses on addressing this problem by attempting to understand the experiences of African American men who successfully navigate a higher education pipeline from community college to a four-year, predominantly White institution (PWI). Half of all African American men enter higher education at the community college level (Villavicencio, Bhattacharya, & Guidry, 2013); therefore, community college plays a key role in shaping their experiences in higher education moving forward. Also, educational data has shown that an African American man, who is also a transfer student, has a small chance of transferring to a four-year PWI and completing a degree. To address this issue, this study is designed to understand how African American men in PWIs of higher education, after successfully transferring from community college, describe and make meaning of their experiences. The design for this qualitative study is phenomenology and is applied to discover the deep interconnectedness shared by this study's participants. Additionally, Critical Race Theory's five educational tenets by Yosso, Smith, Ceja, and Solórzano (2009) were used to understand the contributions that race had on the experiences of participants. I engaged semi-structured interviews with 10 African American men at midwestern PWIs who successfully transferred from a community college. Initial analysis of the data yielded four emergent themes. These themes highlight the participants' experiences with the invisibility of race while at their PWI, how participants' community college experiences shaped their experiences at the PWI, how participants remained determined to achieve their goals through higher education while facing adversity, and how participants ultimately did not express any regrets about attending a PWI. The findings from this research suggest how important it is for practitioners and researchers, whose primary focus is African American men, to continue to design initiatives and research highlighting their stories of success. This positive realignment in practice and research is essential to combating the deficit perspective that dominates the conversation regarding African American men in higher education.

Book excerpt: University students in general experience stressful situations once they leave home and begin to adjust to the new life on a college campus with its related academic and social demands. However, students of color often have the additional burden of coping with race-related stress. Data from a focus group interview with 18 alumni of color, found students being stereotyped, feeling overwhelmingly invisible, being singled out in the classroom and often witnessing racism and racially related incidents. This paper describes the coping strategies they employed and which helped them complete their program successfully. They reported using a strong net work of social support, became resilient and self-sufficient, and sometimes used detachment and self-selected isolation. While this study is limited to self-report it nevertheless provides significant information to the institution as it attempts to address race-related tension and conflict.

Book excerpt: This study is a critical ethnography that examines the relationship between the racial-identity, coping strategies and educational aspirations of two African American males who live (and attend school) in a predominantly White community. The participants reside in a Northeastern state where the African-American population is below 3%. Although they live in different parts of the state, symbols like the Confederate flag were regularly seen inside and outside of both high schools. Critical Race Theory (CRT) is the primary interpretive framework used in this study. However, theory from educational psychology and sociology were also included. Through semi-structured interviews, on-site observations, and artifact analysis (e.g. high school transcripts, SAT scores, and samples of creative writing), this research advances the understanding of how being Black in a predominantly White community affected the participants’ identity, coping strategies and educational experiences. Similar to how any system functions, the participants’ identity, coping strategies and educational aspirations were nested and dependent upon each other. This included a number of balancing and re-enforcing feedback loops. Although this study is qualitative and cannot be generalized, the experiences of the participants were similar. The difference was in their coping strategies. The predominant culture that currently exists in most communities and educational institutions is deeply embedded in racism. This is systemic. It is time all institutions move forward and embrace diversity. Similar to the earth’s resources, race relations must be sustained if we are to create a prosperous world for future generations.
