Book Power System Transient Stability Improvement by FACTS Devices

Download or read book Power System Transient Stability Improvement by FACTS Devices written by Sedaghati Reza and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power System is an extremely non-linear and dynamic system, with operating parameters continuously varying. Stability is hence, a function of the initial operating condition and the nature of the disturbance. The system must be in a position to be able to adjust to the changing conditions and operate satisfactorily. The system must also withstand large disturbances, which may even cause structural changes due to isolation of some faulted elements. The significance of power system stability is increasingly becoming one of the most limiting factors for system performance. Power system transient stability is related to the ability to maintain synchronism when subjected to a severe disturbance, such as a short circuit on the bus. This book proposes a new structure of coordination between two FACTS devices for transient stability improvement of a power system. Furthermore, to achieve a quickly respond and adapt to the power system model, a neural network as a model to control the power transfer of FACTS devices are used. The significant performance of intelligent controller compared with Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) controller through simulation studies on an test power system.

Book Robust Coordinated Control of FACTS Devices in Large Power Systems

Download or read book Robust Coordinated Control of FACTS Devices in Large Power Systems written by Lijun Cai and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid development of power electronics, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices have been proposed and implemented in power systems. This research mainly investigates the robust coordinated control of FACTS devices and traditional power system controllers in large power systems. The following objectives have been achieved: FACTS modeling and controller design: FACTS devices are modeled using the current injection method. Linear and non-linear methods for the FACTS damping controller design are developed. Optimal choice and allocation of FACTS devices: Using the genetic algorithms, the locations of the FACTS devices, their types and rated values are optimized simultaneously. The objective function, which consists of the investment costs for FACTS devices and the generation costs, is minimized.Adaptive FACTS transient controller design using ANFIS technology: This objective deals with the development of fuzzy adaptive FACTS transient stability controller. Furthermore, by means of Adaptive Network based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) technology, the fuzzy controller parameters are optimized.Simultaneous coordinated tuning of FACTS damping controller and conventional Power System Stabilizers (PSSs): Using the linearized power system model and the parameter-constrained non-linear optimization algorithm, interactions among PSS and FACTS damping controllers are considered. The controller parameters are optimized simultaneously to achieve a global optimal damping behavior.Robust FACTS loop-shaping Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller design in multi-machine power systems: By applying the model reduction and modern robust loop-shaping control technique, the FACTS robust loop-shaping POD controller is realized. This controller exploits the advantages of both conventional loop-shaping and modern robust control technique. Moreover, it is a decentralized approach and suitable for FACTS controller design in real large power systems.

Book Robust WAM based Controller Coordination of FACTS Devices for Power System Transient Stability Enhancement

Download or read book Robust WAM based Controller Coordination of FACTS Devices for Power System Transient Stability Enhancement written by Sushama Rajaram Wagh and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] This thesis is devoted to the development of new schemes for transient stability enhancement using FACTS (flexible alternating current transmission system) devices, and the control coordination of power systems with FACTS devices in transient state of post-fault scenario. The key objectives of the research reported in the thesis are, through online control coordination based on the models of power systems having FACTS devices, those of maximising and restoring system transient stability following a disturbance or contingency. The new schemes are developed in two steps with increasing complexity in modeling and in terms of considering the size of power system. In the first part of the thesis, explaining detailed dynamic modeling of power system components with a comprehensive literature review of controllers used in power system, a new model predictive control based TCSC controller is designed, developed, and implemented for SMIB. The key contribution of this new MPC-based TCSC controller is the application of MPC methodology to power systems which is represented by detailed dynamic modelling and coordinated with power system primary controllers i.e. exciter and prime-movers. The simulation study is carried out with a single-machine-infinite-bus system and the effectiveness of the new controller is validated. Having established the foundation provided by the comprehensive models developed for representing power systems with FACTS devices, including the TCSC, the research in the second part focuses on real-time control coordination of power system controllers, with the main purpose of restoring power system stability following a disturbance or contingency. In the second part of the thesis, a detailed literature review is presented to highlight the need of real-time controllers in WAN (wide-area network), which is monitored and operated based on information provided by WAM (wide-area measurement systems). The practical problems in real-time controller requirements are discussed with review which gives motivation to the new innovative scheme developed in the second part...

Book Improving the Stability of Meshed Power Networks

Download or read book Improving the Stability of Meshed Power Networks written by Robin Preece and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work in this thesis proposes the innovative use of modern technologies and mathematical techniques to analyse and control future power systems. It exploits new enabling technologies such as Voltage Source Converter High Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) lines, both single and multi-terminal, and Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS) to reduce the risks of instability associated with greater utilisation of modern power systems. New control systems for these technologies have been analysed, and subsequently designed, using advanced probabilistic analysis techniques to ensure that they are robust to the variable and turbulent conditions expected in the future. The advanced probabilistic techniques used in the thesis for both system analysis and controller design represent one of the first such applications in open literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric power systems are headed for a true changing of the guard, due to the urgent need for achieving sustainable energy delivery. Fortunately, the development of new technologies is driving the transition of power systems toward a carbon-free paradigm while maintaining the current standards of quality, efficiency, and resilience. The introduction of HVDC and FACTS in the 20th century, taking advantage of dramatic improvements in power electronics and control, gave rise to unprecedented levels of flexibility and speed of response in comparison with traditional electromechanical devices. This flexibility is nowadays required more than ever in order to solve a puzzle with pieces that do not always fit perfectly. This Special Issue aims to address the role that FACTS and HVDC systems can play in helping electric power systems face the challenges of the near future.
