Book Improving Geographic Literacy

Download or read book Improving Geographic Literacy written by April Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traveltopia was created as a tool for educators to teach elementary geography skills. By developing map-reading skills, through encoding and decoding maps, this curricular project explores how students can expand their spatial thinking skills and conceptual understanding of geography. The curriculum was implemented in a fourth grade classroom of thirty-two students with a wide range of academic abilities. The students collaborated on group projects with an authentic audience of people interested in the content, not just an audience of one, such as the teacher. Students had an equal opportunity to participate in the research, written, visual, and presentation of their culminating project. Theories of motivation and collaboration regarding student choice, flexible environments, and heterogeneous grouping were factored in this project design. Traveltopia offers support to teachers who are interested in teaching geography in an interactive and engaging way. The unit was designed to establish a cooperative learning environment through independent, small group, and whole class activities. Through this method of teaching and learning, students were also able to establish a community of learners. Data was collected and analyzed from teacher observations and field notes, student writing prompts and surveys, interviews, and the students' final group project. Results indicated that the majority of students became more motivated working collaboratively and improved their geography skill sets when immersed in project-based learning. Ultimately, students will be able to apply the skills learned in this unit and connect it to the geography that touches their own lives outside of the classroom.

Book International Handbook on Geographical Education

Download or read book International Handbook on Geographical Education written by Rod Gerber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased to have been asked by Rod Gerber to provide a preface to such a book. Not least because of the twenty-four chapters, eight are written by former students or colleagues with whom I have worked in the past and whom I still meet at conferences on geographical education. It is with a certain pride and joy that I note the progress which has been made in geographical education both in its day to day teaching and in research, in the twenty years following the end of my term of office as Chair of the Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union (CGEIUG). My successors, Joe Stoltman, Hartwig Haubrich, Rod Gerber and now Lea Houtsonen, have done much and are continuing to work hard, to foster the development of geographical education. This book is proof, if proof were needed, that the international collaboration in this field, is alive and well, with contributions coming from all the continents (except Antarctica!). It would be a moribund subject that remained unaffected in one way or another by developments on the 'great world stage', as Fairgrieve (1926) would have put it. And, as Rod Gerber shows, the issues of globalisation, of cultural encounters, of differing value systems, of new technologies, of variable economic development and of environmental quality, all feature as topics which influence and are influenced by, geographical education.

Book Cooperative Learning in the Social Studies Classroom

Download or read book Cooperative Learning in the Social Studies Classroom written by Robert John Stahl and published by Social Studies School Services. This book was released on 1992 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin provides a context for and an overview of cooperative learning addressing concerns and answering questions teachers, supervisors, and parents may have about this group approach to teaching and learning in the social studies. The intention was to help social studies educators construct a sound conceptual foundation for cooperative learning while eliminating misconceptions. Nine chapters detail building an adequate introductory conceptual framework for envisioning cooperative learning as a viable alternative approach to teaching in the social studies classroom. The first chapter introduces the concept, philosophy, and practice of cooperative learning. The second chapter focuses on the classroom environment and classroom characteristics with and without cooperative learning groups. Chapters 3 and 4 contain reviews of the literature that address effects of cooperative learning in classroom settings. Chapter 5, 6, and 7 focus on classroom teachers. In these three chapters teachers from first grade through secondary school discuss how cooperative learning has worked in their classrooms. They provide a unique perspective on how one can make the transition from using traditional teaching methods to becoming a successful user of cooperative learning. Practical ideas about how to implement cooperative learning in social studies classrooms are included, as well as some historical context for group learning. The final chapter features a dialogue of a group of teachers who are training to use cooperative learning. A position statement on ability grouping is included. (DK)
