Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active database systems have received increasing interest from both research and industrial communities. However, trigger conditions in the active rules are often difficult to specify, especially as the complexity of the events and/or condition: increases. To remedy this problem, we propose an active database system that supports rules with conceptual terms, approximate operators, and complex events. The conceptual terms and approximate operators are user and context sensitive. By introducing these high-level constructs, we not only simplify the rule specification process, but also increase the rule expressiveness. Knowledge-based relaxation techniques are used for rule specification and relaxation. High-level concepts and approximate operators used in rules are first relaxed into low-level active rules by using a tree-type knowledge structure called Type Abstraction Hierarchy which can be generated automatically from the database using clustering algorithms. The low-level rules are decomposed into a set of database triggers, which are then submitted into commercial active relational databases for simple trigger-processing. Thus, our proposed high-level active database system supports complex event detection without modification of the underlying database systems. The proposed active database system with high-level rule processing and complex event detection has been implemented at UCLA. The system operates on top of commercial relational databases that demonstrate the feasibility of high-level rule processing and complex event detection.

CoopIS is a multi-disciplinary conference, which deals with all aspects of cooperation. The relevant disciplines are: collaborative work, distributed databases, distributed computing, electronic commerce, human-computer interaction, multi-agent systems, information retrieval, and workflow systems. The CoopIS series provides a forum for well-known researchers who are drawn by the stature and the tradition of these conference series and has a leading role in shaping the future of the cooperative information systems area. CoopIS 2000 is the seventh conference in the series and the fifth conference organized by the International Foundation on Cooperative Information Systems (IFCIS). It is sponsored by the IFCIS, the IBM Research Laboratory in Haifa and Compaq, Tandem labs Israel. It replaces the former international workshops on Interoperability in Multidatabase systems (IMS) and the conference series on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS & ICICIS). In response to the call for papers 74 papers were submitted. Each of them was reviewed by at least three reviewers, and at the end of this process 24 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference. Six additional papers were selected for short presentations. In addition the conference includes two panels, two keynote speakers (Professor Calton Pu from Georgia Tech and Professor Sheizaf Rafaeli from Haifa University) and one tutorial. Research into Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) investigates design methods and technologies for the support of collaboration, communication and coordination of distributed group work, both within and among organizations. In tandem with this focus on the support of distributed communication and collaboration, there have been exciting developments in the fields of Intelligent Agents and Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI), notably in the concepts, theories and deployment of intelligent agents as a means of distributing computer-based problem solving expertise. The paradigm of multi-agent systems forms a proposed basis for the design of CSCW architectures, the support of CSCW operations and for addressing some of the problems of cooperative working. The application of a multi-agent approach to CSCW makes information exchange among the participants easier by delivering support to the participants, assisting workflows and procedures, and providing convenient user interfaces to CSCW systems. Furthermore, the ideas inherent in such an approach are also applicable to other domains, such as support for interactive learning. Organizations that seek to exploit the advantages offered through CSCW will benefit from the integration of agents in the management and use of their corporate knowledge, especially with the advancement of wired or wireless networking, pervasive computing, and other information technologies. Agent Supported Cooperative Work describes the state of the art in this exciting new area, covering both theoretical foundations and practical applications of ASCW. This time we received 94 submissions from 27 countries. The program committee selected 40 papers for presentation at the conference. During the conference a workshop was organized on the topic “New Information Technologies in Education”. The invited and accepted cont- butions cover a large variety of topics: general aspects of information systems, databases and data warehouses, information retrieval, multiagent systems and technologies, distributed and parallel computing, evolutionary algorithms and system programming, and new information technologies in education. The success of the conference was dependent upon the hard work of a large number of people.
