Cooperatives generally operate in most of the economic sectors where child labourers are found. As cooperatives emphasize commitment to social responsibility, they lend themselves naturally to play an important role in the movement to eliminate child labour. Cooperatives can perform a number of roles: they can ensure that cooperative business operations and supply chains are child labour free; engage in an active awareness-raising campaigns among their members and in the communities in which they operate; and stimulate decent youth employment through training and education programmes. The report concludes that various options such as creating partnerships must be explored. Outlining the general characteristics of child labour, the framework for cooperative action on the issue and best practice methods, the report offers general guidance to cooperative leaders, employees and member.

Book excerpt: Il report segnala che il progresso verso l’eliminazione del lavoro minorile ha subito una battuta d’arresto per la prima volta in 20 anni, invertendo la tendenza al ribasso che ha visto il lavoro minorile diminuire di 94 milioni tra il 2000 e il 2016. I dati rivelano che i bambini di età compresa tra i 5 e gli 11 anni costretti in forme di lavoro minorile sono aumentati in modo significativo e rappresentano poco più della metà del totale a livello globale. Dal 2016 il numero di minorenni di età compresa tra i 5 e i 17 anni occupati in lavori pericolosi è cresciuto di 6,5 milioni, fino a raggiungere 79 milioni. Il rapporto segnala che nove milioni di bambini in più, a livello globale, rischiano di essere spinti verso il lavoro minorile entro la fine del 2022, a causa della pandemia.

Most of the traditional interventions were focusing on combating child labour with no consideration to the living circumstances of the child labourers, controversially the new approaches by different national and international stakeholders started to adjust their interventions to be appealing to the circumstances of child labourers and their families. The main theme of this dissertation is to examine the effectiveness of one of these interventions and its sustainability. For that purpose, a field research in Cairo, the capital of Egypt has been conducted. The aim of the field research is to analyse one of the interventions that implemented through coordination between the Egyptian Government through the National Council of Childhood and Motherhood and one of the Egyptian NGOs Abo Soud Social Development Association NGO. This Egyptian NGO carried out a child labour oriented project in partnership with an Italian NGO Cooperation Internazionale Sud Sud through Children at Risk Programme that funded by the European Union. Using different quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the researcher tried to obtain the perception of child labourers and their families about the implemented activities in order to investigate whether the children's rights and best interests were considered in the course of designing and implementing the activities of the project.
