Book excerpt: Set near and on Lake Ontario in the 1750s, The Pathfinder is chronologically the third installation of James Fenimore Cooper's gripping Leatherstocking Tales. While the French Indian War rages on, Mabel, a nineteen-year-old young woman, is travelling to see her father, Sergeant Thomas Dunham. Accompanied by her uncle and two Native Americans, Smashing Arrows and June Dew, Mabel treks through the dense forests of upstate New York, towards her father's home on Lake Ontario. While the group approaches a river, they meet up with Natty Bumppo, a middle-aged hero who has earned the nickname "Pathfinder", and his friends, Chingachgook and Jasper. The two parties agree to combine, because the forest has become a perilous place amid the French Indian War. As they continue their journey to Thomas Dunham's house, an English castle on the shore of Lake Ontario, the group faces narrow escapes, dangerous terrain, and the consequences of the French Indian War. Though, even when they arrive at the home of Sergeant Thomas Dunham, their journey has barely begun. While he was glad to reunite with his daughter, Dunham's true motivation for her arrival was his hopes to marry her to Pathfinder. However, Mabel has already fallen in love with Jasper. Still, in efforts to manipulate the couple, Dunham tells Pathfinder that Mabel wishes to marry him. While this love triangle persists, the group is challenged with battles, treason and the collateral damage of each. Based off of James Fenimore Cooper's real-life experience as a shipman, The Pathfinder explores a nautical setting, along with the pioneer setting of its predecessors. Placed chronologically third in the narrative of the Leatherstocking Tales, James Fenimore Cooper's The Pathfinder combines adventure and romance. With a picturesque setting, treachery, love, and adventure, The Pathfinder remains to be a captivating narrative that explores new characters in the acclaimed series. Now featuring a new, eye-catching cover design, and a modern, readable font, this edition of The Pathfinder by James Fenimore Cooper is an American classic that entertains with stories of passion and adventure, while allowing readers to immerse themselves in the climate and terrain of early America.

Book Political Liberalism and the Rise of American Romanticism

Download or read book Political Liberalism and the Rise of American Romanticism written by Scott M. Reznick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Liberalism and the Rise of American Romanticism explores how American Romanticism developed in response to pervasive conflicts over democracy's moral dimensions in the early republic and antebellum eras. By recovering the long-under-examined tradition of political liberalism for literary studies, it traces how US writers reacted to ongoing moral and political conflict by engaging with liberal thinkers and ideas as they endeavored to understand how individuals beholden to a divergent array of moral convictions might nevertheless share a stable and just political world—the very dilemma at the core of political liberalism. This study demonstrates how those philosophical engagements sparked Romanticism's rise and eventual flourishing as US writers increasingly embraced Romantic literary modes emphasizing the imagination's capacity for creative synthesis and the role it plays in shoring up the habits of mind and feeling that are vital to a meaningful democratic culture. It offers revisionary readings of works by Charles Brockden Brown, Robert Montgomery Bird, James Fenimore Cooper, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, and Nathaniel Hawthorne to show how these Romantic writers were preoccupied with how individuals come to embrace their deepest convictions and what happens when they encounter others who see the world differently.

Book James Fenimore Cooper

Download or read book James Fenimore Cooper written by Wayne Franklin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive new biography of James Fenimore Cooper, early nineteenth century master of American popular fiction American author James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) has been credited with inventing and popularizing a wide variety of genre fiction, including the Western, the spy novel, the high seas adventure tale, and the Revolutionary War romance. America’s first crusading novelist, Cooper reminds us that literature is not a cloistered art; rather, it ought to be intimately engaged with the world. In this second volume of his definitive biography, Wayne Franklin concentrates on the latter half of Cooper’s life, detailing a period of personal and political controversy, far-ranging international travel, and prolific literary creation. We hear of Cooper’s progressive views on race and slavery, his doubts about American expansionism, and his concern about the future prospects of the American Republic, while observing how his groundbreaking career management paved the way for later novelists to make a living through their writing. Franklin offers readers the most comprehensive portrait to date of this underappreciated American literary icon.
