Book Turning Blood Red The Fight For Life In Cooley s Anemia

Download or read book Turning Blood Red The Fight For Life In Cooley s Anemia written by Arthur Bank and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-11-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the story of an inherited blood disease — Cooley's anemia or beta thalassemia. Cooley's anemia is a severe and potentially fatal anemia that affects millions of people worldwide. Written by a world-recognized expert on the disease who has contributed greatly to the scientific understanding of the pathophysiology of this human hemoglobin disorder, the book describes the emotional and medical impact of the disease on patients and their families. It also summarizes the research on the disease at the level of the genes, DNA, RNA, and proteins. In addition, it also includes chapters on current therapy and future approaches to the disease, such as gene therapy, stem cell transplantation, and antenatal diagnosis.A multidisciplinary book covering the fields of hematology, pediatrics, medicine, genetics, and molecular biology, the book details how Cooley's anemia serves as a model for understanding other human genetic and acquired diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders, and heart disease. It also provides new insights which may lead to new therapies.

Book excerpt: Cooley's anemia, or thalassemia major, is a blood disorder characterized by a marked increase in F hemoglobin and a decrease in the production of certain oxygen-carrying proteins in red blood cells. Thalassemia major is the most severe form of the chronic familial anemias that result from the premature destruction of red blood cells and is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. In the years since the Seventh Cooley's Anemia Symposium, held in 1997, major advances have taken place in the understanding and treatment of the disease. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the switch from fetal hemoglobin to adult hemoglobin production have been further clarified, while new drugs to enhance the production of fetal hemoglobin and relieve the anemia of thalassemia have been introduced and studied. Understanding of the relationship between molecular genotype and clinical phenotype has been advanced ...

Understanding of the relationship between molecular genotype and clinical phenotype has been advanced, and the techniques for molecular diagnosis, including prenatal diagnosis, have been vastly improved. Most importantly, there have been dramatic improvements in the treatment and prevention of complications of thalassemia. As a result, patients are now living longer, albeit with more disability. Problems such as osteoporosis, heart failure, growth hormone deficiency, pulmonary hypertension, and infertility can now be detected early and treated. This volume not only focuses on the advances over the last six or seven years, but also illuminates many unsolved but critically important issues in the understanding and treatment of thalassemia, thus offering the scientific, clinical, care-giving, and patient communities the most up-to-date exchange on the current and future perspectives of the disease. Book Thalassemia and Other Hemolytic Anemias

Download or read book Thalassemia and Other Hemolytic Anemias written by Isam Jaber Al-Zwaini and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thalassemia is a very common disease first described by pediatrician Thomas Benton Cooley in 1925 who described it in a patient of Italian origin. At that time, it was designated as Cooley's anemia. George Hoyt Whipple, a Nobel prize winner, and W. L. Bradford, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester, coined the term thalassemia in 1936, which in Greek means anemia of the sea (Thalassa means "sea", and emia means "blood"), due to the fact that it is very common in the area of the Mediterranean Sea. This name is actually misleading because it can occur everywhere in the world. Thalassemia is not a single disease; it is rather a group of hereditary disorders of the production of globulin chain of the hemoglobin. Throughout the world, thalassemia affects approximately 4.4 of every 10,000 live births. It represents a major social and emotional impact on the patient and his family and a major burden on health services where the prevalence is high.
