Book Cool Stars Stellar Systems and the Sun

Download or read book Cool Stars Stellar Systems and the Sun written by Jeffrey L. Linsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research on the solar-stellar system has been triggered by a host of recent observational data, in particular from space based observations. For this conference the major topics selected centered on new measurement capabilities (magnetic fields and infrared, with specific emphasis on the new IRAS results), important classes of stars (F stars, M dwarfs and giants, and pre-main sequence stars), and interesting unanswered questions (the nature of nonthermal phenomena, heating processes, angular momentum evolution, and the existence and cause of the corona/wind dividing line). Each section is opened by two or more invited lectures aimed at a wide audience, including graduate students, and continues with some research papers. The proceedings also record the two general discussions on the role of magnetic fields in cool star atmospheres and the role of monitoring programs for studies of cool stars (see also Lecture Notes in Physics Vol. 292).

Book High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy in Astronomy

Download or read book High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy in Astronomy written by Hans Ulrich Käufl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-07-18 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two specialized new instruments for ESO's VLT, VISIR and CRIRES, spawned the idea for this workshop. CRIRES is a dedicated very high resolution infrared spectrograph; VISIR features a high resolution spectroscopic mode. Together, the instruments combine the sensitivity of an 8m-telescope with the now well-established reliability of VLT-facility instruments. High resolution here means that lines in cool stellar atmospheres and HII-regions can be resolved. The astrophysical topics discussed in this rather specialized workshop range from the inner solar system to active galactic nuclei. There are many possibilities for new discoveries with these instruments, but the unique capability, which becomes available through high-resolution infrared spectroscopy, is the observation of molecular rotational-vibrational transitions in many astrophysical environments. Particularly interesting and surprising in this context, many papers on modeling and laboratory spectroscopy at the workshop appear to indicate that astronomical observations are lagging a bit behind in this field. The papers are an interesting mix of reports from existing high resolution facilities, reports on modeling efforts of synthetic spectra and reports on laboratory spectra. In this sense, a fruitful exchange between molecular physics and astronomy was again accomplished and is documented in this volume.

Book An Atlas of Selected Galaxies

Download or read book An Atlas of Selected Galaxies written by Sunggyu Takase and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is only several decades since galaxies were recognized as huge aggregations of matter in the universe which consist of myriads of stars and vast clouds of gas. The wide variety of shapes of galaxies is one of the wonders of the universe. Attempts to classify galaxies have continued since an early stage of study, when they were still called nebulae. The first step towards classification was a grouping of the patterns; the second step a systematic arrangement of various morphological types. Classification schemes that are in present use, such as Hubble's, are in the second group. These classifications are usually based on pattern recognition after a visual inspection of the photographic image of the galaxy, and is therefore qualitative and more or less subjective. Using surface photometry of galaxies, a technique which has advanced remarkably in recent years, photographs of galaxies taken in several colour bands can now be efficiently reduced to photometric data. Analysis of this data gives quantitative information on the luminosity and colour distribution for every element of galaxies. The Atlas of Selected Galaxies presents photographs taken with the Okayama 188 cm reflector and the Kiso 105 cm Schmidt telescope for the purpose of photometric analysis. A large number of illustration are given to demonstrate the way in which photographs of galaxies are reduced into quantitative data. These illustrations also show some representative results obtained in the course of the editors' work on the quantitative classification of galaxies. Part I, General Description of the Classification and Photometric Analyses, includes eight sections, whose authors all shared the photometric work and prepared the photographs. In Part II, The Atlas, the illustrations are arranged in sections corresponding to those in Part I. Part III includes tables of data for the atlas.

Book excerpt: "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts" appearing twice a year has become oneof the fundamental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics andneighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. The abstrats are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world.

Book Cyclical Variability in Stellar Winds

Download or read book Cyclical Variability in Stellar Winds written by Lex Kaper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that stellar winds are variable, and the fluctuations are often cyclical in nature. This property seems to be shared by the winds of cool and hot stars, even though their outflows are driven by fundamentally different physical mechanisms. Since very similar models have been proposed to explain the cyclical wind variations observed in a wide variety of stars, the time was ripe for astrophysicists from many different sub-disciplines to present the state of the art in a concise form. The proceedings will provide a useful, up-to-date overview of the observations, interpretation, and modelling of the time-dependent mass outflows from all sorts of stars.

Book Exploring the Universe with the IUE Satellite

Download or read book Exploring the Universe with the IUE Satellite written by Y. Kondo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was conceived to commemorate the continuing success of the guest observer program for the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite observatory. It is also hoped that this volume will serve as a useful tutorial for those pursuing research in related fields with future space observatories. As the IUE has been the product of the three-way collaboration between the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), European Space Agency (ESA) and the British Engineering and Research Council (SERC), so is this book the fruit of the collaboration of the American and European participants in the IUE. As such, it is a testimony to timely international cooperation and sharing of resources that open up new possibilities. The IUE spacecraft was launched on the 26th of January in 1978 into a geosynchronous orbit over the Atlantic Ocean. The scientific operations of the IUE are performed for 16 hours a day from Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, U.S.A, and for 8 hours a day from ESA Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station near Madrid, Spain.
