Book Eating the Bible

  • Author : Rena Rossner
  • Publisher : Skyhorse
  • Release : 2013-11-01
  • ISBN : 1628734639
  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book Eating the Bible written by Rena Rossner and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One weekend, a decade ago, author Rena Rossner was served a bowl of lentil soup at dinner. The portion of the Bible that had been discussed that week was the chapter in which Esau sells his birthright to his brother Jacob for a bowl of red lentil soup. Rossner was struck by the ability to bring the Bible alive in such a tactile way and decided on the spot to see whether she could incorporate the Bible into a meal each week. And so she has. The result, Eating the Bible, is an innovative cookbook with original, easy-to-prepare recipes that will ignite table conversation while pleasing the stomach. Every meal will become both a tactile and intellectual experience as the recipes enrich both the soul of the cook and the palates of those at the table. Every cook must glance at a recipe countless times before completing a dish. Often recipes involve five- to ten-minute periods during which one must wait for the water to boil, the soup to simmer, or the onions to sauté. It is Rossner’s goal to help enrich those moments with biblical verse and commentary, to enable cooks to feed their souls as they work to feed the members of the household and guests. From the zesty “Garden of Eden Salad” to the “Honey Coriander Manna Bread,” each recipe will delight the palate and spark the mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people know the story Jesus told of the prodigal sonthe child who demanded his inheritance and then threw it away on wild living. But there were two sons in the story: the older son watched events unfold and told his father, I stayed with you all these years and you never threw a party for me! Those who grew up in a family with a prodigal understand that cry. Sue Thompson shares her own story of struggle and hope in The Prodigal Brother. She offers ways to heal the ache of feeling second place in a parents affections and attention, and writes with sensitivity about forgiving a wayward brother or sister without excusing the behavior. Anyone whos ever been the good kid will find empathy and encouragement to unload the emotional baggage of growing up with a prodigal in the family. Many of us grew up in families where one of our siblings was the favorite childeither because that one did everything right in his parents eyes or because he was so needy. Whichever the case, Sue Thompson gives practical suggestions from her own life experiences. Whether you are the good one or the neglected one, you will find fresh insight in this eye-opening book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lynne Anderson's portraits of recent immigrant families capture a crucial truth about how real food connects us to our culture, our memories, and to one another. This is an important book." —Alice Waters, Chez Panisse Restaurant "Everyone loves talking about food. In this remarkable book, Lynne Anderson lets recent immigrants to America speak in their own words about the foods they most loved from their homelands. Her cook-storytellers use recipes for cherished foods as a way to recall childhood memories, the events that caused them to emigrate, and their efforts to assimilate—the bitter along with the sweet. For a delicious introduction to the immigrant experience in America, I can't think of a better starting point than Breaking Bread." —Marion Nestle, author of What to Eat and Food Politics "Good ol' home cooking that's not chicken and apple pie. A feast of stories and flavors." Amy Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club and the Bone Setter's Daughter "What's so lovely to me about this book is hearing the actual voices of the people and the unpredictable way their conversations about food capture life issues and truths that extend far beyond the kitchen. More than ever it seems critical to be finding and celebrating what we have in common and the connections between people."—Nikki Silva, co-author of Hidden Kitchens: Stories, Recipes, and More from NPR's The Kitchen Sisters "Breaking Bread throws open a delightful window on the immigrant kitchen in America, capturing the voices, traditions and--yes!--recipes of a couple dozen different food cultures in a single volume." —Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food "In 25 deeply moving first-person accounts from a wide range of immigrant families, each one sensitively introduced by the author, Lynne Anderson takes us straight to the heart of our common humanity. Sharing food and stories are what bind us all across differences in time, space culture, gender and identity. Apart from being an important cultural document, Breaking Bread is a rich, wisdom-packed experience for the scholar, for the casual reader and for all cooks who demand more than just recipes."—Niloufer Ichaporia King, author of My Bombay Kitchen

Book If the Shoe Fits Go Barefoot

Download or read book If the Shoe Fits Go Barefoot written by Sofia A. Wellman and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows you how to magnify the light of your inner authority by helping you understand who you are. Knowing ourselves is the only path to reach our potential as human beings; otherwise our purpose here remains untapped. Life is a series of passages. The most pronounced are birth and death. Birth is the passage from Spirit into form, and death is the passage from form back to Spirit. More significant than those passages is when we are in form and connect with our Spirit. Just like birth and death, it is a passage that must be taken alone. When we understand who we are, what we think we want suddenly becomes insignificant.

Book The Poisonwood Bible

  • Pages : 578 pages

Download or read book The Poisonwood Bible written by Barbara Kingsolver and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize • An Oprah's Book Club Selection “Powerful . . . [Kingsolver] has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review The Poisonwood Bible, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, established Barbara Kingsolver as one of the most thoughtful and daring of modern writers. Taking its place alongside the classic works of postcolonial literature, it is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in Africa. The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability. Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation. Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.

Download or read book LRFW 1 written by Miguel Ángel Cau and published by Archaeopress Archaeology. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ROMAN AND LATE ANTIQUE MEDITERRANEAN POTTERY. In November 2008, an ICREA/ESF Exploratory Workshop on the subject of late Roman fine wares was held in Barcelona, the main aim being the clarification of problems regarding the typology and chronology of the three principal table wares found in Mediterranean contexts (African Red Slip Ware, Late Roman C and Late Roman D). The discussion highlighted the need to undertake a similar approach for other ceramic classes across the Mediterranean provinces. In addition, it was perceived that ceramic studies are often dispersed and in such a variety of publications that it is difficult to follow progress in this vast field. Therefore, a series devoted to Roman and late Antique pottery in the Mediterranean was proposed to serve as a reference point for all potential authors devoted to pottery studies on a pan-Mediterranean basis. The creation of such a series would not only serve as a means of publishing the results of the ICREA/ESF workshop but also as a network for publication of in-depth monographs devoted to archaeological ceramics of the Mediterranean in the Roman and late Antique periods. With this first volume on ceramic assemblages and the dating of late Roman fine wares, Archaeopress launch this new series devoted to the publication of ceramics in the Roman Mediterranean and outlying territories from the late Republic to late Antiquity. Contents: Introductions (a) (M.A. Cau, P. Reynolds, M. Bonifay); (b): LRFW Working Group (text by M.A. Cau, P. Reynolds and M. Book Treasuring God in Our Traditions

Download or read book Treasuring God in Our Traditions written by Noël Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2007-09-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is the treasure of our lives. He is part of everything we do, think, act, and say-literally, he is a part of us. This precious heirloom of Christ himself must be passed on to future generations. But how? Treasuring God in Our Traditions presents the importance of passing along Christ-centered traditions and a Bible-saturated legacy in Christ to future generations. Noël Piper helps her readers recognize how the "everyday" routines of life and the "especially" celebrations of holidays and dates can be practically passed down to future generations. When parents and grandparents seek to pass along the treasure of God to their children and grandchildren, they will develop and deepen their love for him. When family traditions are rooted in the Bible, the next generations will see that the greatest treasure that anyone can have is the treasure of God.
