Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental histories of the Arctic and Antarctica are characterised by contrast and contradiction. These are places that have witnessed some of the worst environmental degradation in recent history. But they are also the locations of some of the most farsighted measures of environmental protection. They are places where people have sought to conquer nature through exploration and economic development, but in many ways they remain wild and untamed. They are the coldest places on Earth, yet have come to occupy an important role in the science and politics of global warming. Despite being located at opposite ends of the planet and being significantly different in many ways, Adrian Howkins argues that the environmental histories of the Arctic and Antarctica share much in common and have often been closely connected. This book also argues that the Polar Regions are strongly linked to the rest of the world, both through physical processes and through intellectual and political themes. As places of inherent contradiction, the Polar Regions have much to contribute to the way we think about environmental history and the environment more generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the outcome of the third international conference of political economy, the papers in this volume cover a range of topics, related to the conference theme of “labor markets and employment,” from globalization to migration, unionization to policy implementation, and women’s labor to child labor and ethnic issues in employment. Despite the wide range they come from, almost all papers draw attention to the radical changes in employment policies and practices around the world, and many of them point to global neoliberalism as the source of this transformation process, one way or another. We believe that revealing the dynamics of this process and putting forward possible alternative policies and practices across the world would provide signicant contribution to solving the problems of labor markets and employment, as the papers in this collection attempt to do.

Book The Red Devil

Download or read book The Red Devil written by Les Parsons and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Harry Butler, AFC, was a national hero in the early 1920s. Hailed as a top aviator, his legacy continues to this day, yet he has been largely forgotten. Harry Butler returned from war with two aircraft and dreams of starting an industry. With his little crimson monoplane, Red Devil, Captain Butler inspired many thousands as he performed aerial shows in support of Peace Loan efforts. He made the first airmail crossing over a significant body of water in the Southern Hemisphere; established, with the famous engineer Harry Kauper, the first passenger flight business in South Australia; took the first aerial photographs; and set up what became the first Commonwealth Government airport in Adelaide. From Butler's childhood in the tiny farming community of Minlaton, where he was inspired by stories of early flight experimentation, to his role as a senior flight instructor in the Royal Flying Corps in England and his postwar experiences, The Red Devil tells the story of a pivotal figure in early aviation in Australia and, through his pilot training role, throughout the world.

Book Carbon Accounting and Savanna Fire Management

Download or read book Carbon Accounting and Savanna Fire Management written by Brett Murphy and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of Australia’s developing carbon economy, fire management helps to abate emissions of greenhouse gases and is an important means of generating carbon credits. The vast high-rainfall savannas of northern Australia are one of the world’s most flammable landscapes. Management of fires in this region has the potential to assist with meeting emissions reduction targets, as well as conserving biodiversity and providing employment for Indigenous people in remote parts of Australia’s north. This comprehensive volume brings together recent research from northern Australian savannas to provide an internationally relevant case study for applying greenhouse gas accounting methodologies to the practice of fire management. It provides scientific arguments for enlarging the area of fire-prone land managed for emissions abatement. The book also charts the progress towards development of a savanna fire bio-sequestration methodology. The future of integrated approaches to emissions abatement and bio-sequestration is also discussed.
