At a time when very few women received more than basic education, Lady Anne Conway wrote an original treatise of philosophy, her Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy, which challenged the major philosophers of her day - Descartes, Hobbes and Spinoza. Sarah Hutton's study places Anne Conway in her historical and philosophical context, by reconstructing her social and intellectual milieu. She traces her intellectual development in relation to friends and associates such as Henry More, Sir John Finch, F. M. van Helmont, Robert Boyle and George Keith. And she documents Conway's debt to Cambridge Platonism and her interest in religion - an interest which extended beyond Christian orthodoxy to Quakerism, Judaism and Islam. Her book offers an insight into both the personal life of a very private woman, and the richness of seventeenth-century intellectual culture.

The Conway Letters is the record of her friendship with the Cambridge Platonist Henry More, which began when he acted as her unofficial tutor in philosophy and lasted until her death in 1679. The letters cover a wide range of topics--personal, philosophical, religious, and social. They give a detailed picture of the More-Conway circle, including such figures as Jeremy Taylor, Ralph Cudworth, Robert Boyle, and Francis Mercury van Helmont, as well as Lady Conway's Quaker associates George Keith and William Penn. The letters are thus a valuable source for mid-seventeenth-century history, and especially for the intellectual history of the period. This revised edition reprints all the letters from the original edition, published in 1930, together with Marjorie Nicolson's biographical account of Anne Conway and Henry More, with its emphasis on the personal side of their relationship. A new Appendix contains some important letters not included in the first edition, among them the early discussion of Cartesianism. The Introduction by Sarah Hutton sets the book in the context of recent scholarship.

Book excerpt: This is the second report (Committee on Standards and Privileges, HCP 207, session 2008-09), on Mr Derek Conway MP, the first was published January 2008 (HCP 280, session 2007-08, ISBN 9780215038449). In the first report, the Committee accepted the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards investigation, that Mr Derek Conway had overpaid his son Freddie Conway, whom he had employed as his Parliamentary research assistant and had awarded him excessive bonuses. The Committee concluded that a serious breach of the rules had taken place. A further complaint was made against Mr Conway in employing his elder son, Henry Conway. The Committee has established that Henry Conway was employed from 1 July 2001 to 1 October 2004. At the time he was a full-time student. His duties as a research assistant were set out in his contract of employment and were wide-ranging, including dealing with constituents. In practice, according to Henry Conway and Mr Conway, half his time was spent on research-related work, and about half on administrative and office tasks. No documentary or other hard evidence of the work carried out by Henry Conway has survived. The Commissioner concludes, on the basis of the evidence seen, that Henry Conway did undertake work for Mr Conway during the period of his employment and that there is insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegation that Henry Conway failed to work the 18 hours a week for which he was contracted. The Committee has accepted the Commissioner's conclusion. The Committee further accepted the Commissioner's conclusions that Henry Conway's basic research and administrative skills were consistent with Mr Conway's requirements as his employer, and that the starting salary, at £800 above the minimum, was not unreasonably high in the circumstances at the time and the decisions to award bonus and overtime payments were not unreasonable. The Committee though agrees with the Commissioner that for the last 21⁄2 years of his employment, Henry Conway's salary was unnecessarily high and that by paying this amount, My Conway had breached the rules of the House. The Committee expects Mr Conway to apologise to the House for his breach by writing to the Chairman of the Committee, and further recommends he reimburse the House in full for the cost of the overpayments to Henry Conway, totalling £3,757.83.

Lascano examines the philosophical systems of Margaret Cavendish and Anne Conway. Cavendish and Conway are both known for their monism, i.e., the view that there is only one kind of substance in the world, which is capable of self-motion and life. Lascano here provides detailed analyses of their respective accounts of monism, substance, self-motion, individuation, and identity over time, as well as causation, perception, and freedom. She thereby shows how their superficially similar views provide importantly different explanations of the workings of the world. Lascano illuminates under-appreciated nuances in Cavendish's and Conway's views, highlighting the important differences between their systems. Examining their views in tandem allows readers to appreciate the originality of their ideas and their responses to seventeenth-century debates. The book's final chapter then explains how Cavendish's metaphysics lays the groundwork for her natural philosophy, while Conway's metaphysics provides the foundation for her theodicy. Drawing on their original writing and engaging with existing scholarship, Lascano presents the first sustained comparison of Cavendish's and Conway's metaphysics revealing the differences between Cavendish's thoroughgoing naturalism and Conway's spiritualism.
