The log 3. The convicts by muster, census and their fate on arrival. It is hoped the evidence gleaned from the log book of the Atlas will add to the background of the voyage and the tragic history of convict transportation to New South Wales. Each page of the original log has been scanned and enhanced, then transcribed for ease of readership and study. It is hoped that noting individual convicts will provide a working document for further research by those who have ancestors who survived the voyage, and went on to create a family of proud 'native' Australians. Their strong work ethic, sense of humour, friendliness, love of life and cheeky lack of respect for authority and all things English became entrenched in the way the nation developed its Australian-ness. Australia was because of them. The log is an important reference point for the book titled 'Beyond the Sea' - The life and times of Murtagh Ahern.

Instead of serving time in prison, the women were sent to work as unpaid servants in the houses of settlers. Feisty Scottish convicts, unaccustomed to bowing and scraping, often irritated their middle-class employers, who charged them with insolence, or refusing to work, or getting drunk. A stint in the female factory became their punishment. Many women survived the convict system and shaped their own lives once they were free. They married, had children and found a place in the community. Others, though, continued to be plagued by errors and disasters until death.
