It examines the theology and practice of believers' baptism among twentieth-century Baptists associated with the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and identifies the major influences which have led to its development. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the majority of Baptists concentrated predominantly on the mode and subjects of baptism (immersion and believers), understanding the rite merely as an ordinance--the believer's personal profession of faith in Christ. However, in continuity with a tradition of Baptists going back as far as the first Baptists in the second and third decades of the seventeenth century, there were also a significant number of ministers and scholars who saw the inadequacy of this view of baptism both biblically and theologically. This sacramental view developed and grew throughout the twentieth century, and influenced a resurgence of baptismal sacramentalism in the early twenty-first century among Baptists not just in Britain, but also in North America, Europe, and further afield.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Convictions: A Selection From the Responses of the Churches to the Report of the World Conference on Faith and Order, Held at Lausanne in 1927 For more than two weeks they discussed such subjects as the Nature of the Church, the Church's Common Confession of Faith, the Ministry and the Sacraments. They endeavoured to pierce below the surface of differing formulae, and to discover the measure of genuine agreement and disagreement in the underlying convictions. After more than two weeks' work, they produced a Report embodying the results they were able to achieve. This Report was sent to all the various Churches which had taken part in the Conference, with a request that they should consider it and express their opinions on it to the Continuation Committee. It is these "Responses of the Churches" to the Report of the 1927 Conference which are printed in this book - or, rather, such selection of them as provides material for future work. In a preliminary survey of these Responses, published in pamphlet form in 1930, it was truly said that: "One common note runs through the whole of the material received: it is that of gratitude for the work which the Lausanne Conference was enabled to accomplish; with this there comes a unanimous determination to continue in co-operation with the movement, and to encourage the Continuation Committee in going forward. There is also a general endorsement, often most cordially expressed, of the general method and principle which the movement has set itself to follow, abstaining from the promulgation of any formal scheme of reunion, and concentrating upon the common consideration of those things in which we agree, and those in which we differ." The Continuation Committee are truly grateful for all such expressions of goodwill, and had it been possible would gladly have published all the Responses in full, as at first they had hoped to do. Visser 't Hooft played a major role in the inclusion of churches from communist countries in the World Council, and he also sought to enlarge the role played by African, Asian, and Orthodox churches in the organization. He served as editor of the Ecumenical Review from 1948 to 1966. He was also the author of numerous books on the ecumenical movement and the nature and functions of the church.
