Book Convictions of the Soul

Download or read book Convictions of the Soul written by Sharon Erickson Nepstad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many U.S. Christians were profoundly moved by the liberation struggles in Central America in the 1980s. Most learned about the situation from missionaries who had worked in the area and witnessed the repression firsthand. These missionaries, Sharon Erickson Nepstad shows, employed the institutional and cultural resources of Christianity to seize the attention of American congregations and remind them of the moral obligations of their faith. Drawing on archival data and in-depth interviews with activists in ten separate solidarity organizations around the country, Nepstad offers a rich analysis of the experiences of religious leaders and church members in the solidarity movement. She explores the moral meaning of protest and the ways in which clergy used religious rituals, martyr stories, and biblical teachings to establish a link between faith and activism. She looks at the factors that transformed missionaries into skilled leaders who were able to translate the Central American conflicts into Christian themes and a religious language familiar to U.S. congregations. She also offers insights into the unique challenges of organizing on the transnational level and shows how the solidarity movement made U.S. policy towards Central America one of the most hotly contested issues in American politics during the 1980s. Unpacking the implications of her study for the field of collective action, Nepstad stresses the importance of the individual human agents who shape, and are shaped by, the structures and cultures in which they operate. She argues that working in and through the church gave supporters of solidarity moral credibility as well as a rich source of symbolic, human, and material resources that enabled them to reach across national boarders, motivating others to act upon their deeply held moral convictions. Shedding new light on the genesis and evolution of this important activist movement, Convictions of the Soul will be of interest to students and scholars of social movements, religion, and politics.

We can lead lives worthy of our convictions. A book of inspiration and integrity, Soul of a Citizen is an antidote to the twin scourges of modern life--powerlessness and cynicism. In his evocative style, Paul Loeb tells moving stories of ordinary Americans who have found unexpected fulfillment in social involvement. Through their example and Loeb's own wise and powerful lessons, we are compelled to move from passivity to participation. The reward of our action, we learn, is nothing less than a sense of connection and purpose not found in a purely personal life. Soul of a Citizen has become the handbook for budding social activists, veteran organizers, and anybody who wants to make a change—big or small—in the world around them. At this critical historical time , Paul Loeb's completely revised edition—and inspiring message—is more urgently important than ever.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, the renowned scholar Marcus J. Borg shares how he formed his bedrock religious beliefs, contending that Christians in America are at their best when they focus on hope and transformation and so shows how we can return to what really matters most. The result is a manifesto for all progressive Christians who seek the best path for following Jesus today. With each chapter embodying a distinct conviction, Borg writes provocatively and compellingly on the beliefs that can deeply ground us and guide us, such as: God is real and a mystery; salvation is more about this life than an afterlife; the Bible can be true without being literally true; Jesus's death on the cross matters—but not because he paid for our sins; God is passionate about justice and the poor; and to love God is to love like God. Borg calls all American Christians to reject divisiveness and exclusivity and create communities that celebrate joy, possibility, and renewal. Throughout, he reflects on what matters most, bringing to earth the kingdom of God Jesus talked about and transforming our relationships with one another. Rich in wisdom and insight, Convictions is sure to become a classic of contemporary Christianity.

Book Convictions Dialects and Separations

Download or read book Convictions Dialects and Separations written by Andrew Tyson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convictions, Dialect and Separation: Communications of the Soul is about a boy becoming a man in a world where he must conquer an internal darkness. He ventures into death, ghost and the afterlife forming the foundation of an alternate spiritual world from the other side. Caught in between two worlds, one white like a canvas, the other black like receptive spirituality, the boy encounters the truths of his past, present, and future. His soul learns how to sense these worlds for the first time by crossing the unconscious darkness and finding the light. When one boys purpose was empty, a hollow shell incased his thoughts, until he found the self incarnate. Thus being an inhabitant of a soul, the body strives to express its essence between the two opposing worlds realization and hope. The higher truth struggles to set a tarnished soul free. Then, speech in the book is intended to generate power for the other people in the world to wield their spiritual sword of presence and strength. An underlying nature comes from his internal communication with the divine source of clear consciousness and the universal silence. Consciousness and self-actualization had no barriers and empowered levels of thought, only to find purity and forgiveness. The speculation of the worlds religious freedoms and the happenings of real time have the chance to change everything. When heart is relinquished of all of its fears, the soul will finally reside in a place of comfort inside of a now free body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Book Award® program Outreach Resource of the Year Have you ever felt too progressive for conservatives, but too conservative for progressives? Too often, political questions are framed in impossible ways for the faithful Christian: we're forced to choose between social justice and biblical values, between supporting women and opposing abortion. As a result, it's easy for Christians to grow disillusioned with civic engagement or fall back into tribal extremes. This state of affairs has damaged Christian public witness and divided the church. The authors of this book represent the AND Campaign, which exists to educate and organize Christians for faithful civic and cultural engagement. They insist that not only are we called to love our neighbors through the political process but also that doing so requires us to transcend the binary way the debates are usually framed. In simple, understandable language, they lay out the biblical case for political engagement and help Christians navigate the complex world of politics with integrity, from political messaging and the politics of race to protests, advocacy, and more. The book includes a study guide for classroom use and group discussion. When we understand our civic engagement as a way to obey Christ's call to love our neighbor, we see that it is possible to engage the political process with both love and truth—compassion and conviction.

We start this adventure by recognizing that only through the soul experience can we come to know who we truly are and, in doing so, unravel the secrets of life. As we walk together, Ill tell you what I see from my perspective, and youll see what unfolds before your inner eyes. Step by step, well develop a mutual understanding and a deeper love of truth, as the darkness that clouds the mind and confuses the intuition gradually gives way to the light of consciousness. Through the eyes of the heart, well catch a glimpse of the eternal nameless one who never dies. Book The Art of Spiritual Direction

Download or read book The Art of Spiritual Direction written by Jos Moons and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2020-11-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concrete, practical book about spiritual accompaniment. While there may be no shortage of books on this matter, most of these books remain somewhat abstract in the way they highlight the beauty of this ministry and point out its pitfalls. This book instead resembles a toolbox with a user’s manual. In six chapters, the author presents the following tools: ‘there is no rush’, ‘listening by following’, ‘searching for the soul’, ‘going deeper’, ‘evaluating’, and ‘accompanying towards spiritual maturity’. By means of examples and case studies, he demonstrates how these tools may be used to good effect. Two introductory chapters discuss the choice for a practice-oriented book and the core values of an Ignatian approach to spiritual accompaniment. A final chapter specifically focuses on vocational discernment. New spiritual directors can learn from this book the tricks of the trade and experienced directors can be encouraged to reflect upon their own practice. Although it is written from a Roman Catholic, Jesuit background, this book may be used in a wider variety of Christian contexts.
