Book Building Conversion Renovation

Download or read book Building Conversion Renovation written by Arian Mostaedi and published by Links books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renovation of old buildings requires some constraint: on the one hand is the designer's natural desire to start anew and let the imagination run free - to show off a bit; and on the other is the need to safeguard historically significant buildings or otherwise preserve unique aspects of the existing structure. It is a difficult balance to strike, and the works included in this volume were selected for their proven success in bringing out the best in old structures, while adding new elements and functions. Ground plans, architectural commentary, sketches, construction details and photographs accompany each project, with a range encompassing converted monasteries, villas, castles, factories and more."

Book Rehabilitation for Redevelopment

Download or read book Rehabilitation for Redevelopment written by D. Michael Hellinghausen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis contends that the rehabilitation of existing building stock is a viable alternative to new construction in the production of housing. Principally, the thesis proposes that old office buildings, built between 1900 and 1930, be rehabilitated and converted for residential use. A specific approach to this rehabilitation and conversion is recommended. A survey was conducted in San Antonio, Texas, of the existing old office buildings within the central business district, in order to identify and define a particular type of building potentially suitable for conversion to housing. The identified building type is described and analyzed. Two examples were selected from the survey for further analysis. The approach recommended for the conversion of the building type consists of two phases, design and construction. In both, recognition of a separation between the public and private spheres in housing production is crucial. Four Levels of Construction are defined, both to aid in the demarcation of these two spheres of authority, and to identify logical stopping-points in the construction of a housing support and individual dwelling units. Within the design phase, the SAR methodology of housing support design is adapted for application to an existing office building structure. To demonstrate this application of the design methodology, and to provide some basis for an evaluation of the suggested approach, the two selected building examples have been taken through the design process in a step-by-step sequence. Based on this demonstration, an assessment is made of the suitability of the building type for this kind of conversion, of the appropriateness of the design methodology in this application, and of the approach in general.

Book Restoring Your Historic House

Download or read book Restoring Your Historic House written by Scott T Hanson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are other books about renovating old houses, this is the first that prioritizes the identification and preservation of the historic, character-defining features of a house as a starting point in the process. That is the purpose of this book: to describe and illustrate a best-practices approach for updating historic homes for modern life in ways that do not attempt to turn an old house into a new one. The book also suggests many ways to save money in the process, without settling for cheap or inappropriate solutions. Scott Hanson is a historic-building preservation professional and has 40 years' experience rehabilitating historic houses. He has illustrated this authoritative book with hundreds of step-by-step photos, illustrations, charts, and decision-making guides. Interspersed throughout are photo essays of 13 restored historic houses representing a range of periods and architectural styles: Italianate, Victorian, Queen Anne, Federal, Colonial, Colonial Revival, Greek Revival, Ranch, Adobe, Craftsman, Shingle, and Rustic. With interior and exterior photography by David Clough, these multi-page features show what can be achieved when a historic home is renovated with a desire to preserve or restore as much historic character as possible.
