Book An Opportunity for Improvement

Download or read book An Opportunity for Improvement written by Allie M. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power generation facilities all over the nation are feeling the stress from increasingly stringent environmental regulations and emission requirements. The WEC Energy Group, located primarily in Wisconsin, is no exception. The burning of coal to make electricity has been a long-going environmental concern for decades now. This concern effects the triple bottom line for organizations like the WEC Energy Group, for operating outside of permitted power plant emissions will be costly, harmful for the planet, and negatively affect those who inhabit it. This capstone project focuses on the benefits of converting an existing coal-burning power plant within the company, and discovered whether or not the company would find value from such a project. The opportunity presented throughout this capstone will answer the question: how will converting an existing coal-burning power plant to natural gas benefit people, planet, and profit at the WEC Energy Group?

Book Clean and Efficient Coal fired Power Plants

Download or read book Clean and Efficient Coal fired Power Plants written by Heinz Termuehlen and published by American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the evolution toward advanced coal-fired power plants. Advanced power plants with an efficiency level of 45% are today commercially available and even more efficient plants are in their development phase. Considering that presently many pulverized coal-fired power plants operate with an efficiency of about 32%, an improvement of more than 40% specific coal consumption and CO2 discharge can be achieved. Before trying to apply as a secondary measure the use of carbon sequestration, it seems that this 40% specific CO2 discharge reduction as a primary measure can much easier be achieved. The effect of power generation on the environment can be drastically improved by the use of flue gas cleanup systems in advanced pulverized coal-fired power plants (SO2 emission reduction from 40 to 1.4 lb/MWh and NOx emission reduction from 7.5 to 0.64 lb/MWh). With an increased number of coal-fired plants, CO2 discharge and emissions can be reduced, even with an increase of electric power generation in the US by 38% over the next 20 years. Even though the book concentrates on pulverized coal-fired power plants, it also discusses and compares other options like fluidized-bed combustion and coal gasification.

Book Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts

Download or read book Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts written by Ashok Rao and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts Comprehensive and a fundamental approach to the study of sustainable fuel conversion for the generation of electricity and for coproducing synthetic fuels and chemicals Both electricity and chemicals are critical to maintain our modern way of life; however, environmental impacts have to be factored in to sustain this type of lifestyle. Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts provides a unified, comprehensive, and a fundamental approach to the study of sustainable fuel conversion in order to generate electricity and optionally coproduce synthetic fuels and chemicals. The book starts with an introduction to energy systems and describes the various forms of energy sources: natural gas, petroleum, coal, biomass, and other renewables and nuclear. Their distribution is discussed in order to emphasize the uneven availability and finiteness of some of these resources. Each topic in the book is covered in sufficient detail from a theoretical and practical applications standpoint essential for engineers involved in the development of the modern power plant. Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts features the following: Discusses the impact of energy sources on the environment along with an introduction to the supply chain and life cycle analyses in order to emphasize the holistic approach required for sustainability. Not only are the emissions of criteria pollutants addressed but also the major greenhouse gas CO2 which is essential for the overall sustainability. Deals with underlying principles and their application to engineering including thermodynamics, fluid flow, and heat and mass transfer which form the foundation for the more technology specific chapters that follow. Details specific subjects within energy plants such as prime movers, systems engineering, Rankine cycle and the Brayton–Rankine combined cycle, and emerging technologies such as high-temperature membranes and fuel cells. Sustainable energy conversion is an extremely active field of research at this time. By covering the multidisciplinary fundamentals in sufficient depth, this book is largely self-contained suitable for the different engineering disciplines, as well as chemists working in this field of sustainable energy conversion.
