Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conversion of a Skeptic: A Member of the Bar My first attempt at authorship was "The Foot Prints of An Itinerant," an autobiographical work which was issued in the fall of 1855. It contained so many family and personal reminiscences, that at the time of composing it, I had not even conceived the idea of giving it to the public during my life-time. I yielded, however, to the wishes of kind friends in whose judgment I had the greatest confidence, so far as to change my original design, and to superintend its publication myself. In this way I was providentially led, as I now believe, to a resort to the pen - and to look to the profits arising from my literary labors for a livelihood. And thus far I have had no cause to complain that my humble efforts have not been appreciated by the church and a generous public. The aggregate number of volumes already issued, of the "Offering," "Foot Prints," "Sacred Hour" and "Brief Recollections," amount to "Twenty-Five Thousand." Book A Skeptic s Guide to Belief

Download or read book A Skeptic s Guide to Belief written by Ken Crispin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would happen if you faced your doubts, set aside your preconceptions, and decided to follow the path of truth wherever it might lead? Most people, whether believers or atheists, doggedly defend what they have always believed. Many see this as an expression of faith. Yet, there is something almost inexpressibly sad about the plight of people living out their lives in reliance upon beliefs they dare not question. Perhaps that is why many of us come to a point at which we feel compelled to pursue the truth, no matter what the implications. But even if we found the courage to embark upon such a journey, could we really find a path through the scientific, philosophical, experiential, and theological thickets that surround the great questions of life? And if we did, would we know the truth and be set free? Would we be forced to face a long-feared despair? Or would we find ourselves still staring impotently at an enigmatic universe? This is a book unlike any other. It addresses these questions with unflinching honesty, drawing evidence from a diversity of scientific fields and subjecting the competing arguments to rigorous skeptical analysis.

Our society places such faith in empirical reason, historical progress, and heartfelt emotion that it’s easy to wonder: Why should anyone believe in Christianity? What role can faith and religion play in our modern lives? In this thoughtful and inspiring new book, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller invites skeptics to consider that Christianity is more relevant now than ever. As human beings, we cannot live without meaning, satisfaction, freedom, identity, justice, and hope. Christianity provides us with unsurpassed resources to meet these needs. Written for both the ardent believer and the skeptic, Making Sense of God shines a light on the profound value and importance of Christianity in our lives.

Book Essays of a Catholic

  • Author : Hilaire Belloc
  • Publisher : TAN Books

Download or read book Essays of a Catholic written by Hilaire Belloc and published by TAN Books. This book was released on 2003-10-03 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN EYE-OPENING BOOK FROM A BRILLIANT, BELOVED CATHOLIC WRITER! Essays of a Catholic is a book as provocative now as it was when it first appeared in 1931. Hilaire Belloc’s observations about our civilization’s demise are all the more urgent today, because they are proving to be prophetic. We are troubled witnesses to many of the evils he predicted as we watch the working out of the destructive trends and forces that he warned would lead to disaster. What key insight led to Belloc’s keen discernment of the times? He recognized that the Catholic Church has inspired and formed our great Western civilization. As the influence of that mighty institution wanes, then—as society slowly abandons what it has learned from her—the night¬ descends on our way of life as we have known it. In its stead emerges a new paganism, and with it, a new barbarism. In these essays, Belloc sharpens our awareness of the calamitous effects of this waning influence of the Catholic Church in society. There is hope for the future of our civilization—but only if we as a people embrace once more the liberating truth of the Catholic faith. The great Hilaire Belloc was one of the foremost Catholic historians of the past two centuries. His astute analysis of our cultural and social ills culminates in an urgent prophetic call for Western civilization to return to its Catholic roots.
