Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conversion Its Nature and Importance: Illustrated by Examples From Real Life Nor is conversion a change Of any kind, in which the subject of it is entirely passive, and for which he can do nothing but wait. Most unconverted persons seem to regard the change in question in this light they regard it as something in reference to which they have no responsibility, have nothing to do, and for which they can do nothing, but sub missively wait until the blessing is bestowed. Now, there can hardly be a greater mistake than this, or one of more disastrous influ ence. The effect Of such an impression can only be, to excuse and qu1et the soul in sin, and put OE that great and needed change, without which we perish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversion is intrinsic to the Christian Religion. The most remarkable conversion recorded in the New Testament is that of Paul, and most Christians consider Christ's encounter with Paul to be a prototype of Christian conversion generally. This collection of eleven essays give Paul's conversion a firmer rootage in the biblical materials while also emphasizing personal application. The contributors examine the nature of Paul's Damascus Road experience and the impact of that experience on his thought and ministry, and explore how Paul's experience functions as a paradigm for Christian thought and action today.

  • Author : Jonathan Edwards
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

Download or read book Religious Affections written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Edwards' most mature and persistent attempt to judge the validity of the religious development in eighteenth-century America known as the Great Awakening. In developing criteria for such judgment he attacked at the same time one of the fundamental questions facing all religion: how to distinguish genuine from spurious piety? The Awakening created much bitter controversy; on the one side stood the emotionalists and enthusiasts, and on the other the rationalists, for whom religion was essentially a matter of morality or good conduct and the acceptance of properly formulated doctrine. Edwards, with great analytical skill and enormous biblical learning, showed that both sides were in the wrong. He attacked both a ?lifeless morality” as too pale as to be the essence of religion, and he rejected the excesses of a purely emotional religion more concerned for sensational effects than for the inner transformation of the self, which was, for him, the center of genuine Christianity.
