Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conversations on War and General Culture As for me, I am but a mere reporter, and cannot, of course, direct or restrain the conversa tion to any particular topic. I dare say that my short-hand brethren, the reporters in the House of Commons, would also, sometimes, like to be able to guide and restrain the debate; but in this respect they are powerless in their sphere, as I in mine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culture and War Recently an American girl obtained entrance to one of the best circles of a Ger man city, and thought it her duty to help others of her race to gain admittance to this group. To her surprise these endeavors were resented. The general feeling was best expressed by a young Englishman, who said that although Germans in England would make fools of themselves to gain a knowledge of English, he would never make a fool of himself to understand Ger man. Controlled by this sentiment, he would not put himself in a position where he seemed inferior to a foreign race, and preferred to go home without attaining the real object of his quest. This may be a lofty patriotism, but think of the cost in misunderstanding, opposition and war. A half of the best blood of the English may. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Great War, composers and performers created music that expressed common sentiments like patriotism, grief, and anxiety. Yet music also revealed the complexities of the partnership between France, Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. At times, music reaffirmed a commitment to the shared wartime mission. At other times, it reflected conflicting views about the war from one nation to another or within a single nation.Over Here, Over There examines how composition, performance, publication, recording, censorship, and policy shaped the Atlantic allies' musical response to the war. The first section of the collection offers studies of individuals. The second concentrates on communities, whether local, transnational, or on the spectrum in-between. Essay topics range from the sinking of the Lusitania through transformations of the entertainment industry to the influenza pandemic.Contributors: Christina Bashford, William Brooks, Deniz Ertan, Barbara L. Book James Joyce Science and Modernist Print Culture

Download or read book James Joyce Science and Modernist Print Culture written by Jeffrey S. Drouin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes an important intervention in the ongoing debates about modernism, science, and the divisions of early Twentieth-Century print culture. In order to establish Joyce's place in the nexus of modernism and scientific thought, Drouin uses the methods of periodical studies and textual criticism to examine the impact of Einstein's relativity theories on the development of Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Looking at experiments with space, time, motion, and perspective, it rigorously surveys discourse of science and the novel in the print culture networks connected to Joyce, with concrete analysis of avant-garde magazines, newspapers, popular science books, BBC pamphlets, and radio broadcasts between 1914 and 1939. These sources elucidate changes that Joyce made to the manuscripts, typescripts, and page proofs of certain episodes of his final two novels. The new evidence establishes for the first time the nature of the material link between Joyce and non-technical science, and the manner in which Ulysses and Finnegans Wake owe their structure and meaning to the humanistic issues associated with science during the wartime and inter-war years. In examining the relationships between Joyce's later work and the popular science industry, the book elucidates the often conflicting attitudes toward science in inter-war British print culture, filling in a piece of the puzzle that is modernism's relationship to the new physics and, simultaneously, the history of the novel.

Book General Sherman Classic Reprint

Download or read book General Sherman Classic Reprint written by General Manning F. Force and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Sherman General Sherman was the most picturesque figure in the civil war. His character was absolutely pure and spotless. He had a vigorous and penetrating intellect, prompt and clear in comprehension and in decision. While steadfast in his opinions, he was subordinate in conduct; he held to his judgment in issue against President Lincoln, but yielded as unquestioning obedience to Mc-Clernand as to Grant. He was an omnivorous reader, and was a storehouse of felicitous anecdote. His cheerful disposition and inexhaustible fund of conversation made him always a delightful companion. Frank as a child and outspoken in his likes and dislikes, Sherman was often engaged in controversy. The war filled only a few years of his life, but comprised most of his activity and achievements. Accordingly, his biography naturally groups itself into these parts - before, during, and after the war, and so it is written, in the following pages. The effort in this narrative has been to give in the simplest form a statement of the facts without comment. The completion of the publication of the First Series of the War Records gives opportunity for a fair approximation to a correct statement.
