Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging introduction to the New Testament, Professor Dale B. Martin presents a historical study of the origins of Christianity by analyzing the literature of the earliest Christian movements. Focusing mainly on the New Testament, he also considers nonbiblical Christian writings of the era. Martin begins by making a powerful case for the study of the New Testament. He next sets the Greco-Roman world in historical context and explains the place of Judaism within it. In the discussion of each New Testament book that follows, the author addresses theological themes, then emphasizes the significance of the writings as ancient literature and as sources for historical study. Throughout the volume, Martin introduces various early Christian groups and highlights the surprising variations among their versions of Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best of therapy and spiritual direction begins with telling stories that describe where we have been and where we are going. Luke is neither a psychologist nor a spiritual director, but intuitively he understands the importance of storytelling as the key to human growth, change, and healing. Speaking to the crisis of faith faced by his church, Luke retells the story of Jesus birth, ministry, death, and resurrection as a means of addressing the spiritual struggles that resurface generation after generation. Touching on issues of belonging, authority, tradition, behavior, and hope, Schmidt offers a reading of Luke's gospel that speaks to today's reader.

Book Jesus and the Disinherited

Download or read book Jesus and the Disinherited written by Howard Thurman and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “No other publication in the twentieth century has upended antiquated theological notions, truncated political ideas, and socially constructed racial fallacies like Jesus and the Disinherited. Thurman’s work keeps showing up on the desk of anti-apartheid activists, South American human rights workers, civil rights champions, and now Black Lives Matter advocates.” –Rev. Otis Moss III, author of Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World and senior pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ A commemorative edition of the work that inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and helped shape the civil rights movement In this beautiful gift edition of the classic theological treatise, complete with a place-marker ribbon and silver gilded edges, celebrated theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman (1899–1981) revolutionizes the way we read the gospel. Thurman lifts Jesus up as a partner in the pain of the oppressed and reveals the gospel as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. In this view, the example of Jesus’s life shows us that hatred does not empower—it decays. Only by recognizing fear, deception, contempt, and love of one another can God’s justice prevail. With a new foreword by acclaimed womanist theologian Kelly Brown Douglas, this edition of Jesus and the Disinherited is a timeless testimony of faith that demonstrates how to thrive and flourish in a world that attempts to destroy one’s humanity from the inside out. Having witnessed firsthand the depths of white supremacy and the heights of human civility, Thurman reiterates the inherent dignity of all of God’s children.

Book The Gospel According to Luke

Download or read book The Gospel According to Luke written by James R Edwards and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new Pillar commentary devotes attention throughout to the vocabulary, historical background, special themes, and narrative purpose that make the book of Luke unique among the four Gospels. Though the Gentile focus of Luke is often held to be primary, James Edwards counterbalances that by citing numerous evidences of Luke's overarching interest in depicting Jesus as the fulfillment of the providential work of God in the history of Israel, and he considers the possibility that Luke himself was a Jew. Edwards also draws out other important thematic issues in excursuses scattered throughout the commentary, including discussion of Luke's infancy narrative, the mission of Jesus as the way of salvation, and Luke's depiction of the universal scope of the gospel. This readable, relevant commentary attends to the linguistic, historical, literary, and theological elements of Luke that are essential to its meaning and considers Luke's significance for the church and the life of faith today.

Book Mystery of the Magi

    Book Details:

Download or read book Mystery of the Magi written by Dwight Longenecker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The perfect Christmas gift for anyone interested in the historical background behind the birth of Jesus of Nazareth." — Robert J. Hutchinson, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible, The Dawn of Christianity, and Searching for Jesus. "Utterly refreshing and encouraging." — Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Martin Luther "The best book I know about the Magi." — Sir Colin John Humphreys, Ph.D., author of The Mystery of the Last Supper Modern biblical scholars tend to dismiss the Christmas story of the “wise men from the East” as pious legend. Matthew’s gospel offers few details, but imaginative Christians filled out the story early on, giving us the three kings guided by a magical star who join the adoring shepherds in every Christmas crèche. For many scholars, then, there is no reason to take the gospel story seriously. But are they right? Are the wise men no more than a poetic fancy? In an astonishing feat of detective work, Dwight Longenecker makes a powerful case that the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem really happened. Piecing together the evidence from biblical studies, history, archeology, and astronomy, he goes further, uncovering where they came from, why they came, and what might have happened to them after eluding the murderous King Herod. In the process, he provides a new and fascinating view of the time and place in which Jesus Christ chose to enter the world. The evidence is clear and compelling. The mysterious Magi from the East were in all likelihood astrologers and counselors from the court of the Nabatean king at Petra, where the Hebrew messianic prophecies were well known. The “star” that inspired their journey was a particular planetary alignment—confirmed by computer models—that in the astrological lore of the time portended the birth of a Jewish king. The visitors whose arrival troubled Herod “and all Jerusalem with him” may not have been the turbaned oriental kings of the Christmas carol, but they were real, and by demonstrating that the wise men were no fairy tale, Mystery of the Magi demands a new level of respect for the historical claims of the gospel.

Book The New MAGNIFIED Version of the GOOD NEWS According to Saint LUKE

Download or read book The New MAGNIFIED Version of the GOOD NEWS According to Saint LUKE written by Worldwide Revolution! and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Luke was a Physician during the Time of Christ, who never actually Mentioned his own Name within the Gospel according to Saint Luke; but, that is the Adopted Name of the Book, even as all of the Gospels have Adopted Names: beCause no one Knows for Certain just WHO the Authors were. However, when you read any one of them, you get the Idea that perhaps the Author had a Convenient Tape Recorder at hand, whereby he might Record all of the Conversations Accurately. Otherwise, they must have had Astounding Memories, which some People use to have, who could Quote all such Conversations Exactly and without taking Notes. However, in the Case of San Lucas, he might have had a Scribe with him, who knew Short Hand very well, and thus wrote down every Word. Whatever the Case, we can Trust him more than any of the other Authors of the New Testament: because he Claimed to have a Perfect Understanding of all of those Happenings from the very Beginning, who was perhaps 20 Years Old when Jesus was Born, and Lived 40 more Years after he Died, even though he made no Mention of it within his Books, including the Acts of the Apostles, which is by far his Best Book, when it comes to Christian History, which none of the other Writers even wrote about. Indeed, if it were not for "Saint Luke," we would not know much of anything about the First Church of Jesus Christ, except for what the Apostle Paul wrote; but, Thanks to Luke, we do have at least some of the History in Details. For Example, the First Church had "all things in common among them," which is to say that they all Shared their Wealth; but, probably not the same Toothbrush, nor Comb, and certainly not each other's Wives, in spite of saying "all things"! But, the Exact Details of that Economic System can be found in "The New MAGNIFIED Version of the Book of ACTS!" Yes, it is an Amazing Tale of Truths, even as this New Magnified Version of LUKE is, which contains some Wonderful Parables - such as the Prodigal Son, the Rich Man and Lazarus, the Unjust Judge, the Bad Steward, the Wise Steward, and many more. But, hardly any Verse in the entire Holy Bible is as Enlightening to the Mind as a certain Verse in Chapter 12, which is Powerful enough to Overthrow all Evil Governments, Worldwide! Therefore, that alone makes this Inspired Book of far more Value than any Meal of Dog Food or Hog Slop at the Death and Hell Restaurant, which Meal is Destined for the Toilet, while an Extremely Good Book like this one, is likely to Live Forever - at least on the Bookshelves of all Potential Saints! And yes, it might Require some Editing, during the Future, just to Fit the Times and Seasons; but, until then, do not Deprive yourself of one of the Best Books on this Good Earth, all of which is now Understandable, for which Reason it was MAGNIFIED by the Inspired Author of more than 350 Exceptionally Good Books, which are Ranked among the Best in the World, and certainly in the Honest Opinions of all Wise People who have Brains to Think with, and Minds to Remember what is most Important in Life, which are the Inspired Words of Provable Truths, which alone can Set us Free with a Capital F, and only when we Learn them and Practice them with a Capital L and P. Therefore, do not be Afraid to Learn them, nor Practice them: beCause they are Good for your Mind, Body and Spirit, whereby you will become a Shining Light unto the People of the World, yourself!
