This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Introduction and overview Until still few years ago, economic growth theory (going back to Solow, 1956; for an introduction cf. Burmeister and Dobell, 1970) predicted convergence of both growth rates and level of per capita income of economies which share identical preferences, technologies and same population growth rates, independently of initial conditions. Countries with a low capital stock grow faster than those with a higher capital stock, until, in the long-run, they all converge to a common constant growth rate. This prediction is due to the way how growth is "explained" in models of this kind. Growth of output per capita resulted, in the simplest model, from an exogenous growth oflabour productivity (see e. g. Sala-i-Martin, 1990; Grossman and Helpman, 1991a, ch. 2). Si!1ce this increase of productivity is exogenously given, the model itselfdoes not give any explanation ofits source. The prediction ofconvergence ofgrowth rates, itself, is very doubtful and observations show, that on an international level either convergence is not given at all, or that it takes a very long time. The literature of the "new" theory of growth provides a rich variety of models whose theoretical implications range from divergence to convergence and thus offers much better working tools in order to analyze real world observations. These models (starting with Romer, 1986 and Lucas, 1988) explain growth of GNP or per capita income from within the model by includingexternal effects such as a public stock ofknowledge capital (e. g.

Book Economic Growth and Convergence

Download or read book Economic Growth and Convergence written by Michał Bernardelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many different types of convergence within economics, as well as several methods to analyse each of them. This book addresses the concept of real economic convergence or the gradual levelling-off of GDP (gross domestic product) per capita rates across economies. In addition to a detailed, holistic overview of the history and theory, the authors include a description of two modern methods of assessing the occurrence and rate of convergence, BMA-based and HMM-based, as well as the results of the empirical analysis. Readers will have access not only to the conventional econometric approach of β convergence but also to an alternative one, allowing for the convergence issue to be expressed in the context of automatic pattern recognition. This approach is universal as it can be adapted to a variety of input data. The lowest aggregation level study investigates regional convergence through the case of Polish voivodships, where convergence towards the leader is tested. On a higher level of aggregation, the authors examine the existence of GDP convergence in such groups as the EU28, North Africa and the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, South America, Caribbean, South-East Asia, Australia and Oceania, or post-socialist countries. For each group, the real β convergence is tested using the two above-mentioned approaches. The results are widely discussed, broadly illustrated, interpreted, and compared. The analysis allows readers to draw interesting conclusions about the causes of convergence or the drivers behind divergence. The book will stimulate further research in the field, but the research was conducted from the point of view of individual countries.

Book Regional Convergence and Divergence Tendencies in Europe

Download or read book Regional Convergence and Divergence Tendencies in Europe written by Sascha Sardadvar and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent empirical studies on regional economic growth have extended regressions on convergence to account for externalities and spatial dependencies. Most of these studies, however, set the focus on whether regional output levels display convergence trends and consequently tend to ignore persisting or widening disparities that may occur at the same time. This paper examines the simultaneous occurrence of regional convergence and divergence tendencies in Europe by applying a spatial econometric model specification that is derived from a neoclassical growth model. Depending on factor endowments and relative locations in space, divergence may occur within sub-groups of regions despite an overall observation of convergence. The observation area comprises 253 European regions of the EU and EFTA on the NUTS2 and equivalent level, with empirical results provided for an observation period from 2001 to 2007.

Book Regional Convergence in the European Union

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the single currency in the European economic space constitutes without doubt the most visible step towards monetary and economic integration in the EU. Those who boosted the birth of the Common Market in 1957 dreamt that this would one day come about as a logical consequence of the integration process. However, things have gone much more slowly than possibly imagined, although if taken in an adequate historic perspective, it is undeniable that the agreements that have led to European Monetary Union signify a really formidable jump in the process of political and economic integration in Europe. This is something many doubted would ever happen, but which is already a reality, although still in need of a period of consolidation. The most general economic consequences of the EMU have already been analysed in considerable depth. Proof of this is the literature already available. In general, there is coincidence in affirming that the balance of the results expected is clearly positive. Firstly, as a result of the anticipated gains in efficiency, a consequence of reduction of transaction costs associated to the previous existence of different currencies and of the elimination of exchange rate uncertainties.

Book Convergence Clubs and Spatial Externalities

Download or read book Convergence Clubs and Spatial Externalities written by Stilianos Alexiadis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do dynamic externalities, in the form of technology creation, adoption and spatial agglomeration shape the pattern of regional growth in Europe? This study provides an alternative view on regional convergence. A model is developed which attributes club-convergence to existing differences with respect to the degree of technology adoption. In the first instance, empirical results suggest that the NUTS-2 regions of the EU-27 converge at a very slow rate. Further tests, however, indicate that convergence is restricted to a specific subset of regions. Such conclusions are tested further, using an alternative model of club-convergence, which incorporates the impact of spatial interaction, agglomeration externalities and technology. This shows that the convergence-club in Europe follows a certain geographical pattern and all members share similar characteristics regarding technology creation and adoption, and agglomeration externalities.

Book Regional Growth in the United States

Download or read book Regional Growth in the United States written by Noah Nehemiah Gillespie and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Development" is a ubiquitous term that at one turn refers purely to regional or national economic growth, and at another refers to achieving a basic standard of living for all the people of the world. The dearth of reflection on these multiple meanings in the literature is further overshadowed by the absence of empirical study into the different implications of development, when considered through these various lenses. In this thesis, I strive to provide some analysis into the prevailing trends in two separate measures among the 48 contiguous United States over the period 1997-2006: real Gross State Product per capita (GSP) representing the "economic growth" paradigm, and the Human Development Index (HDI) representing a more holistic "quality of life" conception. Using the standard convergence equation popularized and rigorously defined by Barro and Sala-i-Martin (2004), I analyze whether there is convergence, divergence or stability in the distribution of GSP and HDI over this time period. I also experiment with three different model specifications: the standard non-linear model, a random effects panel model, and a spatial error panel model with random effects. Each specification, by relaxing some of the assumptions of the previous model, is found to provide a more realistic and nuanced picture of the true data generating process. I find that, over the study period, there is stability in GSP among the states, and that HDI is converging rapidly. I find further that all of the components of HDI are converging with the exception of the "command over resources" component, which is based on real GSP per capita. This implies that if prevailing trends continue, the quality of life experienced by the states in terms of health and education will rapidly approach equality, but that inequality in income is persistent, and should be the focus of policy aimed to increase equity among U.S. residents. I also find that there are significant spatial relationships among the states, and that controlling for these spatial effects greatly improves a model's explanatory power.

Book Regional Disparities Growth and Inclusiveness

Download or read book Regional Disparities Growth and Inclusiveness written by Mr.Holger Floerkemeier and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss regional disparities in economic performance and living standards. We first set out some key facts, and provide a conceptual framework to help analyze whether such disparities are efficient, or instead reflect market and/or policy failures. We examine whether policy attempts to reduce regional disparities necessarily involve a trade-off between equity and efficiency. We then investigate whether policymakers should focus on boosting the economic performance of lagging regions—or, conversely, accept the presence of regional disparities, and instead assist households in lagging regions through transfer payments, investments in education, health, and other basic services, and by facilitating out-migration.
