Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Strangers in Our Midst tells the story of how American evangelicals have responded to refugees and immigrants - ranging from the Cuban refugee influx in the 1960s, to the Southeast Asian refugees in the 1980s, to undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the 1990s and 2000s. Evangelical Christians have been a pillar of US immigration and refugee policy since the end of World War II in two key ways: by acting as refugee sponsors and by offering legalization assistance to undocumented immigrants. They developed an elaborate evangelical theology of hospitality, which emphasized scriptural commands to "welcome the stranger." Initially, evangelicals did not distinguish between legal immigrants and refugees and "illegal," undocumented immigrants. However, a growing anti-immigrant consensus in American society at large and their political alignment with the Republican Party caused them to shed their welcoming approach to immigrants in the 1990s. Evangelicals were now divided in their stances on immigration, as conservative evangelicals viewed only legal immigrants as deserving of their aid, while progressive evangelicals-led by their Latinx coreligionists-emphasized the need for Christians to help all immigrants. In the twenty-first century, a group of Latinx evangelical leaders resurrected and reshaped the evangelical theology of hospitality in an effort to turn the tide in the evangelical debate on immigration. The results are mixed: Unprecedented numbers of evangelicals favor a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Yet as the 2016 presidential election showed, this preference had no impact on their political choices"--

Download or read book Baptist Battles written by Nancy Tatom Ammerman and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1979 Southern Baptists have been noisily struggling to agree on symbols, beliefs, and practices as they attempt to make sense of their changing social world. Nancy Ammerman has carefully documented their struggle. She tells the story of the Baptist reversal from a moderate to a fundamentalist outlook and speculates on the future of the denomination. Ammerman places change among the Southern Baptists in the context of the cultural and economic changes that have transformed the South from its rural past into an urbanizing, culturally diverse region. Not only did the South change; Southern Baptists did as well. Reflecting this diversity, the Southern Baptist bureaucracy was relatively progressive. During the 1960s and 1970s, moderate sentiments prevailed, while fundamentalists remained on the margins. These two were, however, becoming increasingly divergent in what they considered important about being a Baptist, in their views about the Bible, in their attitudes on the origination of women, on Christian morals, and on national politics. Late in the 1970s, a fundamentalist coalition emerged, followed by unsuccessful efforts by moderates to oppose it. The battles escalated until 1985, when 45,000 Baptists gathered in Dallas to decide between contending presidential candidates. That dramatic event illustrated the extent to which organized political resources were determining the course of the conflict. Ammerman studies these strategies and resources as well. Examining how this tension affected Baptists, Ammerman begins with case studies of the change it is producing in Baptist agencies. But she also brings us back to the local churches and individual believers who are renegotiating their relationships within their denomination. She asks whether the denomination's polity can accommodate an increasingly diverse group of Baptists, of whether the only way dissidents can have a voice is through schism.

Download or read book Memory and Hope written by David T. Priestley and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are Baptists distinctive as a Christian denomination? Canadian Baptists, confronted with the question of discovering a common identity from the welter of strands of influence that make up their heritage, may infer several answers from the essays in Memory and Hope. Focussing on Baptist history in central and western Canada, Memory and Hope discusses individuals, institutions and issues that have stirred Baptists in North America for two centuries, including confessionalism and eucharistic theology and fundamentalism vs. modernism. Recurring themes include the Baptist role in education in Canada, the establishment of new churches, overseas missions and social responsibility. Essayists also examine the powerful forces that have influenced Baptist history: immigration, theology and society. Studies of missionary Samuel Stearns Day, fundamentalists Aberhart, Maxwell and Shields and social gospellers Sharpe and Shaw illustrate the diversity of ideas and personalities that have shaped and been shaped by the Baptist Church. Memory and Hope is an important resource for the history of the Baptist Church in Canada. In the issues it raises on the role of churches in the twenty-first century, it will also make a significant contribution to the study of religion in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luther Rice was born on a small farm in Northborough, MA. He underwent a powerful religious conversion as a teenager in a time when spiritual revival was sweeping across New England. Sensing a call to missions, he and Adoniram Judson traveled to India with the Congregational mission agency. While on the ship during the long voyage, his study of Scripture led him to embrace a Baptist view of baptism. He was baptized by immersion upon reaching India and felt compelled to resign as a Congregationalist missionary since he could no longer represent their theology in good faith. He returned to America where he rallied Baptist churches to support missionaries. Though his intention was to return to the mission field, that never happened. Instead, he traveled the country extensively, preaching on evangelism and missions and encouraging Baptists to organize themselves more formally so that missions could be supported more effectively. Many listened to his pleas, and Baptist mission societies sprang up around the nation. He also felt the need to train future pastors and missionaries, so he helped establish Baptist colleges across the nation. Not everyone agreed with his aggressive fundraising efforts or his constant promoting of missionary and educational efforts. Many accused him of only caring about money. But he gave 100 percent of himself to the Lord's work, having never married. He died while on a preaching tour of South Carolina. His legacy lives on today in the colleges he helped found, in numerous Baptist mission boards that trace their roots to his ministry, and in the Luther Rice Lodge, a training facility in Northborough, MA that occupies what was once the Rice family home, barn, and blacksmith shop. All proceeds from the sale of this book support the ministry of the Luther Rice Lodge.
