Book Convective Heat Transfer from Small Cylinders in Water at Low Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book Convective Heat Transfer from Small Cylinders in Water at Low Reynolds Numbers written by Robert T. Achard and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was performed to investigate the applicability of using commercially available hot-film and hot-wire anemometer probes to measure water velocities below 3 fpm, and to determine the degree to which the probe sensors can be applied to quantitatively measure heat transfer. The probes were towed in a water trough at speeds between 0 and 3.5 fpm. Sensor diameter ranged from 0.15 to 6 mils and the range of Reynolds number was 0 to 3.5. The study indicated that 1 and 2 mil sensors were suitable for velocity measurement in water with 5% accuracy for speeds as low as 1 fpm. Experimental data for natural convection from horizontally and vertically oriented cylinders were developed which indicated end losses of 20% to 30% for hot-film sensors with length to diameter ratios of 20. Forced convection data conformed to a relationship recommended by Knudsen. (Author).

Book FORCED CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER TO COOLED CYLINDERS AT LOW REYNOLDS NUMBERS AND WITH LARGE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES

Download or read book FORCED CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER TO COOLED CYLINDERS AT LOW REYNOLDS NUMBERS AND WITH LARGE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the purpose of determining a general correlation for forced convective heat transfer coefficients for circular cylinders in cross-flow under conditions pertaining to cooled-film application for measurements in flames and hypersonic wakes, heat transfer measurements were obtained under simulated conditions created in a plasma-jet. Measurements were made by means of constant temperature, internally cooled, cylindrical film sensors in the Reynolds number range 5-75 for various temperature loadings, the maximum being T sub infinity/T sub s = 4, and for flows composed of He, N2 and CO2. The plasma-jet conditions were maintained such that at the points of measurements, i.e. at the potential core of the jet, ionization was negligible, recombination was complete and the turbulence intensity was low. All the fluid property values in the dimensionless parameters were evaluated at the arithmetic mean temperature. A kinematic viscosity ratio instead of the more usual temperature ratio was considered in the temperature loading factor to account for the different dependency of the transport properties on temperature for different gas species. Book Fundamental Principles of Heat Transfer

Download or read book Fundamental Principles of Heat Transfer written by Stephen Whitaker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental Principles of Heat Transfer introduces the fundamental concepts of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. It presents theoretical developments and example and design problems and illustrates the practical applications of fundamental principles. The chapters in this book cover various topics such as one-dimensional and transient heat conduction, energy and turbulent transport, forced convection, thermal radiation, and radiant energy exchange. There are example problems and solutions at the end of every chapter dealing with design problems. This book is a valuable introductory course in heat transfer for engineering students.

Book Convective Boiling and Condensation

Download or read book Convective Boiling and Condensation written by John Gordon Collier and published by McGraw-Hill International Book Company. This book was released on 1981 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On its original publication in 1973, this book was the first reference for engineers to fully present the science of boiling and condensation. It dealt especially with the problems of estimating heat transfer rates and pressure drops, with particular attention to the occurrence of boiling and condensation in the presence of forced flows within pipes. The new third edition was written primarily for design and development engineers in the chemical process, power generation, and refrigeration industries, and is meant to be an aid in the design of heat exchangers. It covers recent advances and significantly broadens coverage to flows over tube bundles, with extensive new treatment of two-phase heat transfer regarding refrigerants and petrochemicals. Many new problems have been added at the end of each chapter to enhance the book's use as a text in advanced courses on two-phase flow and heat transfer. Instructors using the book as a course text may obtain full solutions to the end-of-chapter problems by writing to: Science Marketing Dept., Oxford University Press, 198 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10016 (please include school name and course identification), or by faxing (212) 726-6442.

Book Convective Heat Transfer from Circular Cylinders Located Within Perforated Cylindrical Shrouds

Download or read book Convective Heat Transfer from Circular Cylinders Located Within Perforated Cylindrical Shrouds written by Kamran Daryabeigi and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of perforated cylindrical shrouds on the convective heat transfer to circular cylinders in transverse flow has been studied experimentally. Geometries studied were similar to those used in industrial platinum resistance thermometers. The influence of Reynolds number, ventilation factor (ratio of the open area to the total surface area of shroud), radius ratio (ratio of shroud's inside radius to bare cylinder's radius), and shroud orientation with respect to flow were studied. The experiments showed that perforated shrouds with ventilation factors in the range 0.1 to 0.4 and radius ratios in the range 1.1 to 2.1 could enhance the convective heat transfer to bare cylinders up to 50%. The maximum enhancement occurred for a radius ratio of 1.4 and ventilation factors between 0.2 and 0.3. It was found that shroud orientation influenced the heat transfer, with maximum heat transfer generally occurring when the shroud's holes were centered on either side of the stagnation line. However, the hole orientation effect is of second order compared to the influence of ventilation factor and radius ratio.
