Book excerpt: The passage of a weak vorticity disturbance through a reactive shock wave, or detonation, is examined by means of a linearized treatment. Of special interest is the effect of chemical heat release on the amplification of vorticity in particular, and on the disturbance pattern generated downstream of the detonation in general. It is found that the effect of exothermicity is to amplify the refracted waves. The manner in which the imposed disturbance alters the structure of the detonation itself is also discussed. This is the second workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Instability and Transition" edited by M. Y. Hussaini and R. G. Voigt. The objectives of these work shops are to i) expose the academic community to current technologically im portant issues of transition and turbulence in shear flows over the entire speed range, ii) acquaint the academic community with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these capabilities, and iii) accelerate progress in elucidating the fundamental phenomena of transition and turbulence, leading to improved transition and turbulence modeling in design methodologies. The research areas covered in these proceedings include receptiv ity and roughness, nonlinear theories of transition, numerical simu lation of spatially evolving flows, modelling of transitional and fully turbulent flows as well as some experiments on instability and tran sition. In addition a one-day mini-symposium was held to discuss 1 recent and planned experiments on turbulent flow over a backward facing step.

The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Major Research Topics in Combustion," edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar, and R. G. Voigt. The focus of the second workshop was directed towards the development, analysis, and application of basic models in high speed propulsion of particular interest to NASA. The exploration of a dual approach combining asymptotic and numerical methods for the analysis of the models was particularly encouraged. The objectives of this workshop were i) the genesis of models that would capture or reflect the basic pllysical phenomena in SCRAMJETs and/or oblique detonation-wave engines (ODWE), and ii) the stimulation of a greater interaction between NASA exper imental research community and the academic community. The lead paper by D. Bushnell on the status and issues of high speed propulsion relevant to both the SCRAMJET and the ODWE parallels his keynote address which set the stage of the workshop. Following the lead paper were five technical sessions with titles and chairs: Experiments (C. Rogers), Reacting Free Shear Layers (C. E. Grosch), Detonations (A. K. Kapila), Ignition and Struc ture (J. Buckmaster), and Unsteady Behaviour ('1'. L. Jackson).

Book excerpt: The interaction between a shock wave (attached to a wedge) and small amplitude, three-dimensional disturbances of a uniform, supersonic, freestream flow are investigated. The paper extends the two-dimensional study of Duck et al(1), through the use of vector potentials, which render the problem tractable by the same techniques as in the two-dimensional case, in particular by expansion of the solution by means of a Fourier-Bessel series, in appropriately chosen coordinates. Results are presented for specific classes of freestream disturbances, and the study shows conclusively that the shock is stable to all classes of disturbances (i.e. time periodic perturbations to the shock do not grow downstream), provided the flow downstream of the shock is supersonic (loosely corresponding to the weak shock solution). This is shown from our numerical results and also by asymptotic analysis of the Fourier-Bessel series, valid far downstream of the shock.
