Book Current Controversies in Perinatology an Issue of Clinics in Perinatology

Download or read book Current Controversies in Perinatology an Issue of Clinics in Perinatology written by Robert H. Lane and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neonatal-perinatal medicine has a strong history of evidence based practice but unfortunately there remain many areas of uncertainty and unproven hypotheses and treatments that may harm our highly vulnerable patients. When new ideas are introduced into the labor and delivery room or the NICU we have to evaluate these procedures and therapies before they become accepted as standards of care. We need to learn from the past lessons of grey baby syndrome and chloramphenicol and of kernicterus and sulfonamide antibiotics where therapeutic good intentions actually did more harm than good and increased the mortality rate of premature babies in the NICU.This proposed edition addresses a broad range of current topics in perinatal neonatal practice. The AAP has just issued new guidelines for the approach to a neonate exposed to maternal genital herpes virus infection. The recommendations were not evidence based and are highly controversial as well as confusing. These topics are addressed in a scholarly and objective manner to both address the controversy and help the practitioner make informed decisions.

Download or read book Controversies in Perinatal Medicine written by Jose M. Carrera and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-04-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of new diagnostic technologies such as Doppler technology and three-dimensional ultrasonography has changed the nature of perinatal medicine. However, the rush to introduce new procedures has sometimes compromised the rigor necessary in the initial analyses of their uses. The field is moving ahead so rapidly that health-care protocols can quickly lose their validity and controversy soon arises. Controversies in Perinatal Medicine examines the current state of the science through the lens of evidence-based medicine. With expert editorial direction and contributions from leaders in the field, the book guides readers through the maze of new technologies and procedures and explores the issues they raise in terms of scientific methodology. It focuses on selected issues in quality care of the fetus and the mother; early diagnosis and decision making; how and if new diagnostic technologies affect outcomes; contributions of ultrasou nd technology to the body of knowledge; screening and treatment for prematurity; changes in cesarean section rates; and ethical issues. Controversies in Perinatal Medicine gives you a clear picture of the developments in diagnosis and treatment made possible by new technologies and the insight to resolve the issues involved in using them.

Book Emerging Topics and Controversies in Neonatology

Download or read book Emerging Topics and Controversies in Neonatology written by Elaine M. Boyle and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook addresses the themes that are at the forefront of neonatal clinical care and research, based on natural divisions in care during pregnancy, and postnatally by gestational age at birth. The book offers a unique approach, in that it proposes discussion of important general principles underpinning neonatal care that are not addressed in most general neonatology textbooks, such as ethical issues, counselling, effective training methods, quality and safety, among other subjects. These are fundamental aspects and challenges that need to be appreciated by senior clinicians. A chapter authored by parents describing their perspectives of neonatal intensive care is unique and will be highly educational, with the potential to influence the way in which individuals view and deliver neonatal care. The authors discuss common and important conditions, to promote adoption of sound evidenced based practice where this is available. However, where evidence is limited, as is the case in many areas of neonatal practice, the authors aim to encourage critical thinking and evidence appraisal, which are necessary skills for busy clinicians wishing to filter evidence to guide delivery of care. This text is suitable for senior trainees wishing to pursue a career in neonatal medicine, early career neonatologists and paediatricians with an interest in neonatology. It is also of interest to established neonatologists wishing to update their neonatal knowledge. The content is based on the RCPCH Level 3 curriculum, and addresses important topical and/or controversial aspects of neonatal care.
