Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a successor to Monetary Policy and Credit Control (Croom Helm, 1978; Routledge Revivals, 2013), this book, first published in 1982 with a revised edition in 1984, traces the changes in approach to monetary control in the U.K. throughout the 1970s, and the consequences for policy and the British economy. The book considers the widely-publicised proposals for ‘reserve base’ or ‘monetary base’ control of the financial system, including a critique of the 1980 Bank of England Green Paper. David Gowland concludes with an analysis of the 1979 Conservative Government’s monetary policy. This is a very interesting title, of great relevance to students and academics researching recent British economic history and varying governmental approaches to monetary policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1978, provides an analysis of British monetary policy and considers what techniques of monetary control were most appropriate to the context of the U.K. during the 1970s and 1980s. David Gowland answers crucial questions surrounding economic management in the period between 1971 and 1976, in particular whether rapid monetary expansion was the cause of the acceleration of U.K. inflation. With an analysis of the government’s experimentation with policy at its core, this is a unique study which will be of interest to students of monetary policy and recent British economic history.

Book Economic Calculations and Policy Formation Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Economic Calculations and Policy Formation Routledge Revivals written by Grahame Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays develop a Marxist response to and approach to aspects of the recent economic past in the United Kingdom. They reflect issues and controversies that have arisen within economic policy debate and the economic theory associated with the debate, highlighting the problematic nature of economic policy in the period since the mid-1970s. The book, first published in 1986, develops a line of argument organized around issues of ‘calculation’, thus challenging the orthodox Marxist framework and presenting a neo-Marxist analysis.

Book The Conservatives Economic Policy Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Conservatives Economic Policy Routledge Revivals written by Grahame Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to economic policy during the first five years of Mrs Thatcher’s government? Most commentators have emphasised the radical changes wrought in economic theory and policy over the period from 1979. The left saw this as heralding the introduction of the social market economy and authoritarian populism, the right saw it as evangelical monetarism and a new beginning. This book, first published in 1986, challenges the notion that there was a revolution in economic policy making. It emphasises the constraints on economic policy formation and the ironies that these have thrown up with respect to the Conservatives’ attempts at changing the course of the economy. The book argues that the Thatcher government had not been able to implement a great deal of its rhetoric. This book is ideal for students of economics and politics.

Book Free Market Conservatism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Free Market Conservatism Routledge Revivals written by Edward Nell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this book carefully dissects and convincingly demonstrates that conservative economics is incoherent in theory and disastrous in practice. The three main schools of thought supporting "free-market" policies – supply side economics, monetarism and rational expectations – are examined in turn and each is found defective. Three case studies of conservative policy in action follow: Reagan’s U.S., Thatcher’s U.K. and Pinochet’s Chile and their courses are charted in depth. In addition, Robert Heilbroner and Edward Nell analyse economic conservatism’s ideology and social policy, and the book concludes with an assessment of the political reasons for the continuing appeal of free-market conservatism despite its theoretical incoherence and practical failure. This is a careful and comprehensive look at this subject which tackles both the theory and the practice head-on. It will make useful and stimulating reading for students of economics and political economy on courses of economic policy and macro-economics and in addition will be of keen interest to all those involved in the debate about one of the major policy issues of our time.

Book The Phenomenon of Money Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Phenomenon of Money Routledge Revivals written by Thomas Crump and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1981, this book concerns itself with the different ways in which money is used, the relationships which then arise, and the institutions concerned in maintaining its various functions. Thomas Crump examines the emergence of institutions with familiar and distinctive monetary roles: the state, the market and the banking system. However, other uses of money - such as for gambling or the payment of fines - are also taken into account, in an exhaustive, encyclopedic treatment of the subject, which extends far beyond the range of conventional treatises on money.

Book The Controlled Economy Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Controlled Economy Routledge Revivals written by James E. Meade and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1971 this volume applies the tools of static and of dynamic analysis (outlined in The Stationary Economy and The Growing Economy) to the control of a dynamic economy. This involves a discussion of subjects such as the theory of indicative planning, and the planning by the government of its monetary, fiscal, and incomes policies for the purposes of the short-run stabilization of the economy and of ensuring the best long-run use of the community’s resources. Special emphasis is laid on the planning of such policies in conditions in which many future events remain inevitably uncertain. This book considers these issues in relation to a competitive, free-enterprise economy; and little or no reference is made to problems of monopoly or of distinctions between social and private costs and benefits, due to indivisibilities and externalities in economic life.

Book Controlling Money

Book excerpt: This book analyzes three common sources on confusion about Federal Reserve policy: an inadequate comprehension of the differences among alternative operating procedures available to the Federal Reserve and the consequences of choosing one set of procedures rather than another, a tendency to ignore or deemphasize the importance of nonpolicy factors in determining month-to-month variations in the money stock, and a failure to understand the two-stage decision process implicit in the use of a target path for money as a surrogate for the ultimate targets of economic policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, Michael Beenstock develops in The World Economy in Transition an original, stimulating and accessible analysis of the world economy in its many aspects, and this second edition includes a chapter on the International Banking Crisis in line with the author’s Transition Theory. The book embraces numerous strands of economic debate as the author provides a powerful and original thesis which focuses on the changing economic relationship between developed and developing nations as well as between manufacturing and primary producing sectors. The analysis also extends to international trade, commodity markets, international finance, energy and economic history. The book discusses, in addition to Transition Theory, other global approaches to the subject, including technology diffusion, long waves, commodity price effects and the oil price hikes, and the insights of Transition Theory are also applied to the historical experience of the British economy, concluding with an evaluation of policy implications.

Book Economic Myths and the Mythology of Economics Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Economic Myths and the Mythology of Economics Routledge Revivals written by E. J. Mishan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Economic Myths and the Mythology of Economics is a polemical study in which the author focuses on the popular myths and misconceptions that colour our understanding of economic issues. Professor Mishan, the internationally recognised economist and expert in the field of resource allocation and cost benefit analysis, undermines the idea that economics is a science. But such are popular myths, he argues, that governments employ battalions of economists in their ongoing attempts to promote economic growth, efficiency and employment. The author challenges the validity and measurement of such concepts as economic efficiency and GNP, and questions the assumption that free competitive markets can operate effectively in a rapidly changing, high-technology society. Professor Mishan foresees in his study further expansion as an unavoidable consequence of continued innovation, while revealing the interconnecting processes by which innovative activity, designed to raise living standards, has begun to erode the moral and psychological foundations of a viable and libertarian society.

Book Improving Money Stock Control

Download or read book Improving Money Stock Control written by L.H. Meyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 30-31,1981, the Center for the Study of American Business and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis cosponsored their sixth annual conference, "Improving Money Stock Control: Problems, Solutions, and Consequences." This book contains the papers and comments delivered at that conference. The Federal Reserve System has moved, over the last decade, toward setting policy in terms of explicit and publicly announced monetary aggre gate targets - specifically, growth ranges for alternative measures of the money supply. This conference, as the title suggests, was wide ranging in its discussions of monetary control. But rather than dealing with the merits of monetary aggregate targeting, its focus was instead on solving the problems associated with, and evaluating the consequences of, im proved monetary control. The initial paper outlines the current operating procedures followed by the Federal Reserve and suggests reforms to improve monetary control. The following three discussion papers in Part I critically examine the Fed's operating procedures. The two papers in Part II discuss the experi ence of other countries with monetary aggregate targeting - the United Kingdom and Switzerland, respectively - and Part III examines the con sequences of improved monetary control.

Book The Money Changers

Download or read book The Money Changers written by David Boyle and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2002 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common sense view of "money" as a natural and unchanging economic fact is, in reality, a product of contemporary society. Indeed, ever since money was invented there has been fierce debate about its political, economic and ethical character, and a continued discourse, involving academics, political theorists and social reformers, on the best ways to create money, the most effective rules for governing its use, and even the potential benefits of its abolition. Recent years have seen an increasingly powerful resurgence of interest in fundamentally changing national and global systems of currency and in controlling the monetary trends -- the booms and busts of the globalized economy -- that affect all aspects of our lives. Yet few realize that these objections have deep roots and a rich tradition. "The Money Changers" is a unique collection of historical and contemporary thought on the nature of money, combining the political and polemical, the analytical and the visionary. It draws on a wealth of expertise and experience, from the impassioned treatises of reformers such as William Morris, via the mainstream economics of John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek, to the entrepreneurial insight of social activists such as Edgar Cahn and George Soros. This book is a timely guide to the key ideas and ideologues in a fast-moving debate on our economic and social future and will prove informative, enlightening and entertaining for academics and general readers alike.
