Book Controlling Chemical Hazards

Download or read book Controlling Chemical Hazards written by R.P. Cote and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents environmental protection managers and advanced students in environmental studies programs with an overview of the principles, facts, multidisciplinary approaches, and some of the complex ities of the management of toxic substances. The text explores critical issues facing managers responsible for prevent ing and controlling problems associated with the manufacture,. transport, storage, use and disposal of chemicals. It does this from two perspectives. The first is a disciplinary perspective, that is environmental chemistry, of toxicology, engineering, economics, sociology and political science, all which playa role in implementing comprehensive programs to manage chemicals. The second perspective is from the view of industry, govern ment, academia and non-government organizations. For example, Chapter 5 is authored by technical managers of a major chemical company, Chap ters 6 and 12 by government scientists and managers respectively, and Chapter 10 by a respected member of the environmental lobby. An appreciation of these perspectives is very important for developing and running effective chemical management programs.

Book Industrial Hygiene Control of Airborne Chemical Hazards

Download or read book Industrial Hygiene Control of Airborne Chemical Hazards written by William Popendorf and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you need guidelines for choosing a substitute organic solvent that is safer to use? Do you need an effective, cheap but perhaps temporary way to reduce exposures before you can convince your employer to spend money on a long-term or more reliable solution? Do you need information about local exhaust ventilation or personal protective equipment like respirators and gloves? Industrial Hygiene Control of Airborne Chemical Hazards provides the answers to these questions and more. Science-based and quantitative, the book introduces methods for controlling exposures in diverse settings, focusing squarely on airborne chemical hazards. It bridges the gap between existing knowledge of physical principles and their modern application with a wealth of recommendations, techniques, and tools accumulated by generations of IH practitioners to control chemical hazards. Provides a unique, comprehensive tool for facing the challenges of controlling chemical hazards in the workplace. Although William Popendorf has written the book at a fundamental level, he assumes the reader has some experience in science and math, as well as in manufacturing or other work settings with chemical hazards, but is inexperienced in the selection, design, implementation, or management of chemical exposure control systems. Where the book is quantitative, of course there are lots of formulae, but in general the author avoids vague notation and long derivations.

Book Prudent Practices in the Laboratory

Book Proctor and Hughes Chemical Hazards of the Workplace

Download or read book Proctor and Hughes Chemical Hazards of the Workplace written by Gloria J. Hathaway and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The indispensable resource for health professionals on potentially unsafe chemicals--now fully updated Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition provides a comprehensive reference text for health professionals who need toxicology data on chemicals that may be encountered in various work settings. Building on the success of the Fourth Edition-already a standard text-this new edition updates and revises the more than 600 entries of that text, and also adds monographs on new compounds. Introductory chapters cover toxicological concepts, clinical manifestations of exposure, the diagnosis of occupational disease, and industrial hygiene aspects of chemical exposures. The rest of the text consists of more than 625 alphabetically arranged entries on individual compounds, each of which includes: * Chemical formula * CAS number * 2003 ACGIH (American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists) threshold limit value * Synonyms * Physical properties * Sources of exposure * Routes of exposure * Toxicological data The toxicological data includes both acute and chronic effects, especially as related to any known exposure levels. The data emphasizes human studies and cases over animal data whenever sufficient information is available, and addresses any known carcinogenic, mutagenic, fetotoxic, or other reproductive effects. Clinical information is presented in a succinct narrative form to aid in understanding. Easy to use, in-depth, and comprehensive, Proctor and Hughes' Chemical Hazards of the Workplace, Fifth Edition offers occupational health physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, and other safety professionals an invaluable and up-to-date resource.

Book Chemical Laboratory Safety and Security

Download or read book Chemical Laboratory Safety and Security written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-07 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of State charged the Academies with the task of producing a protocol for development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) that would serve as a complement to the Chemical Laboratory Safety and Security: A Guide to Prudent Chemical Management and be included with the other materials in the 2010 toolkit. To accomplish this task, a committee with experience and knowledge in good chemical safety and security practices in academic and industrial laboratories with awareness of international standards and regulations was formed. The hope is that this toolkit expansion product will enhance the use of the previous reference book and the accompanying toolkit, especially in developing countries where safety resources are scarce and experience of operators and end-users may be limited.

Book Occupational Health and Workplace Monitoring at Chemical Agent Disposal Facilities

Download or read book Occupational Health and Workplace Monitoring at Chemical Agent Disposal Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In keeping with a congressional mandate (Public Law 104-484) and the Chemical Weapons Convention, the United States is currently destroying its chemical weapons stockpile. The Army must ensure that the chemical demilitarization workforce is protected from the risks of exposure to hazardous chemicals during disposal operations and during and after facility closure. Good industrial practices developed in the chemical and nuclear energy industries and other operations that involve the processing of hazardous materials include workplace monitoring of hazardous species and a systematic occupational health program for monitoring workers' activities and health. In this report, the National Research Council Committee on Review and Evaluation of the Army Chemical Stockpile Disposal Program examines the methods and systems used at JACADS and TOCDF, the two operational facilities, to monitor the concentrations of airborne and condensed-phase chemical agents, agent breakdown products, and other substances of concern. The committee also reviews the occupational health programs at these sites, including their industrial hygiene and occupational medicine components. Finally, it evaluates the nature, quality, and utility of records of workplace chemical monitoring and occupational health programs.
